It's only the second episode, but so far it feels so much closer to the manga in tone that I'm so overwhelmingly satisfied. I went back and reread the manga and then rewatched the original anime when I heard the announcement of the reboot, and in hindsight the original anime is such a travesty of the source material.

The muted colors, the subdued music, and the beautifully subtle voice acting so far has been so much more Furuba than the original Furuba anime was. Tohru's cheerfulness and kindness really come off as genuine as opposed to a caricature of character traits, Yuki has a lot more depth to him, Kyou's temper doesn't seem so absurdly magnified, and Shigure isn't a one-note perverted comedic bit piece.

Side note: the inclusion of Saki curling Tohru's hair in class is one of those tiny little characterization subtle moments the original manga had that I was so glad to see included.

Although Kyo is a tsundere I like him a bit, I hope he wins against Yuki next time.

Those hugs are a nuisance though, I wonder how will they be intimate with their partners? I'm really interested since this has a romance tag.

OP is nice but it felt way too slow, would've worked better as an ED imo. Something slightly faster and more upbeat for OP would've been nice.

Still liking the new reboot, but can't help but feel like they should've gone the Parasyte method - e.g. update/modernize some things. It's too faithful to the manga which is making it feel cheesy and dated. Also, they really need to get rid of that awful CGI transformation fog.

Great episode.

As many people have mentioned, this has such a nice and classic shoujo feel to it. It's also pretty soothing to watch.

The OP and ED are beautiful. :)

Liking all the characters already, I did see quite a lot of male characters in the ED so I guess a question to the manga readers. How reverse harem does this get? Does it ever get overbearing with too many relationship interests?

Nah, those males you saw either like someone else that isnt tohru or nobody at all.

Just another great episode. Having read the manga, I'm finding I've been getting grit in my eyes every now and then when the dialogue is related to parts of the back story that haven't been revealed yet. I really hope that they adapt the entire manga this time, since most of the power of the story (and most of the story itself) comes from the chapters that are after where the first anime ended.

This got pretty interesting with the development of their relationship.

Also, Yuki said transforming in animals doesn't grant them superpowers but then Kyou jumped from like the third floor and landed like a cat would.

A nice anime. The opening and the ending are beautiful, they are full of tranquility.
Tooru purifies me, it seems so tender to me 😅. Although in the long run, I think, she will cause some romantic disputes between Kyou and Yuki. Obviously, they will fall in love with Tooru.

I like both Kyo and Yuki - if I had to choose one favorite right now after 2 eps, it honestly would be super difficult. I’m sure I will eventually favor one over the other, but regardless, I am really enjoying this show and all the characters. Had a smile on my face throughout most of the whole episode. :)

For everyone trying to guess what will happen in this anime...please, just read the manga. It is worth it. It came out in 1998 (so some might say it's outdated) but the story and art are very good! It's also a fairly short manga (only 23 vol.). Definitely worth your time! p.s. they made a point to show "the hat" so I think there is a huge possibility that they may cover the manga thoroughly in this adaptation. Hang in there everyone 🙏

Honestly I hate love triangles more than anything in any narrative and I wouldn’t really say this a typical one or even one in general. You can tell from the very beginning where the ships will be going. It’s easy to mistake Fruits Basket for a reverse harem but really not all the love the characters have for Torhu is romantic. There’s a lot of just pure admiration for her personality.

When Yuki transformed into a mouse in school, if you look at his clothes, you will notice he was going commando. Lol.

The reddish-orange guy is annoying. He reminds me of Asuka from NGE.

I wanna know what the author was thinking when she decided to make Yuki a mouse. Mice are so disgusting!

The delivery guy at the start of the episode was kind of attractive in a way that looked like he'd be important later in the series.

Transform when sick or hugged by the opposite sex huh...

Listen to this Opening theme! Listen to it!

Kyo got slapped!

Akito...isn't that a kind of dog breed?

Sucks for Yuki. Can't get a girlfriend because of his secret...

Well gotta hand it to Kyo. He's got self-defense skills to avoid getting hugged by a girl...

Kyo's got the right idea. The perfect girl does not exist!

This would have been hard to catch if you blinked during this scene:

Talk about Kyo being Tsundere...

Well I can see where this is going. Considering that there's a lot more animals in the zodiac, Tohru's harem might grow a little more. Until then...

I’m loving the new series. It is quite different in its tone, but I think that’s a good thing. 1. I don’t want it to be a copy of the original, I want them both to stand on their own. & 2. I’m enjoying the more mellowness, with the little bits of humor. It doesn’t have the super over the top humor that the first anime had. I enjoyed that in the original, but that one was much more comedy based, and this one should be much more drama/emotion based.

I’m really excited to see next weeks episode!

Exactly! both versions have different tones.. both have different deliveries and we can see that they have different charms given to the viewers.. maybe some will find the humor here lifeless but its fine.. this version is not a replica of the first anime but the manga is.

At the speed they're going it's probably gonna be 3 seasons of 24 eps, or 2 season of 24 eps + one of 12.
The adaptation is pretty great, but less funny than the manga, which was one of my favorite things about it, but it's ok since the story gets more dramatic later.
The scenes with kyo were so sweet, they're doing a good job with him.
If you're worried about the love triangle, DON'T BE. Everything will make sense in the end, and it's gonna be so satisfying, just watch.
If you can't understand tohru's appeal you will later on, and if you still don't you have a heart made of stone.

I switched between them during the whole manga, it gets more difficult since you really get to understand both of them later on. and at the end i decided i can't pick one.

The opening is okay, I guess. They probably choose that one just to have a similar vibe to the 2001 version.

I can't remember whether that Shigure and Akito scene was in the manga or not.

Kyo love him some much!
I still not really like Yuki VA Prefer this old one!
I now got use to the animation more I think it is so cute but simple too.
I really like all the scenes with Kyo and Tooru Scenes a lot!
I really love to see more of this anime I hope the first season of this new version at least had 24 episode!
I can't wait to see Kagura I think she is in the next episode or in episode 4.

Not once in my entire life was I even close to hugging other people by accident. But it happened several times in just two episodes and to literally everybody. Looks like I'll have to put down with certain amount of silliness in this series.

Kyo is cute though. Very, very cute

No, it's just Tohru, she's "the Klutz" type of character. It's not overblown but if they choose to animate everything in the manga, which I highly doubt, there will be plenty more of her klutz moments.

Nope, there are plenty of female characters. It's a love triangle at best. There are also plenty of relationships that develops outside of the three main characters.

It's not reverse harem. Other male characters have their own love interests. Only Kyo and Yuki are interested in Tohru in romantic way and even that love triangle isn't bothersome, because it will become more and more obvious who Tohru likes and she's the one to confess first and other guy finds new love interest.

There are also female characters, that turn into zodiac animals.
and it has multiple couples.

All Fruits Basket couples. I put it under spoiler tag.

I just have to say, i thought the less humor would kinda idk make it less magic to me compared to when i first watched, but i have to say the humor is pretty fine too. Obviously i love the elevated humor from the original anime, but an anime focuse more od the shoujo and drama is fine too.

Kyo is a cutie angry pie and i love him so much, but i still prefer my rat boy Yuki lmao, also besides my preference of cold and calm nature characters over hotheaded ones, Yuki still is one of my first "anime crushes" lmao (and his original silver hair and eyes are making it easy lmao).

The animation is lit tho, the fight scene was pretty good, and i loved the ost playing on it.

The episode had its fun moments and I like the lighthearted atmosphere but it's also so naive. And Tooru just has to be so careless as to hug them even knowing the secret.
I get that it's for the comedy sake and to drive the story forward. But still... Maybe I'm getting too old for such things.

I saw the 2001 version back when I was a kid and I didn’t like it that much so I dropped it. But oh boy, this reboot is everything. I’m absolutely hooked, it only felt like a few minutes instead of twenty. The wait for each week is dreadful.

And can I just say how beautiful the OP is? I fell in love with it along with the meaning of the lyrics. I can imagine it coming from Kyo’s perspective. Instant feels. :’(
