As much as I love countless characters in anime, I always thought people who would pay a lot of money for the figures of them are, well, nuts - that is, unless they are rich.

I mean, don't get me wrong, everyone is free to buy whatever they want, just it seems to me that those figures are really, really expensive.

That being said, for the first time I actually saw some figures of Saori Kido, and I would lie if I said that I don't like them.

https://myanimelist.net/character/5628/Saori_Kido

...

I saw pictures with people having their rooms full of those things, so I wonder if anyone on MAL also buyed something like that...

What do you think about such stuff?

Cool?
Or weird.

Enjoy in thread.

My Maria Ushiromiya figurine was definitely worth the price.

I have a couple of nendos yeah, and I'd say they're worth the price if it's a character you like a lot.

I don't understand it, after all what I've noticed is that most anime fans are highly virtual space orientated but at the same time they are so materialistic to buy figurines and other merch... it's kinda contradictory.

I have a modest-sized figure collection.

I started collecting back around 9 years ago, although I don't buy as many figures as I used to, because they're rather expensive, and my figure cabinet is running out of room.

I am not rich and I have bought a figure, and not precisely a cheap one. When I turned 18 and got my first temporary job as a mall-store assistant, I spent part of my salary to buy this beauty:

I had earned around US$200 for that job and about $120 of them were destined to finally buy it. Virtually, 60% of all the effort of a whole month exchanged for only... home decoration!! haha. But it was definitely worth the price and effort... I put in in my room desk and it's been shining there ever since, and I care a lot for it, I even clean it from the annoying dust that accumulates on it frequently.

Bruh I would buy SO MUCH COOL WEEB SHIT if I could afford it, but adulting is hard and I’m bad at saving money.

All my money goes towards gaming equipment like the pc I’m building, or weed and pizza cause that just amplifies your enjoyment of anime tenfold.

I manage to fork over some money for shit I really want though, and to support series I really love.

The Urahara style hat I’m wearing in my profile pic is one example. No figures yet but someday I’m sure. I guess as a kid I had dbz/Pokemon toys, idk if they qualify as figurines

I spent 250 bucks on the super rare and way-too-expensive Yato figure.

Besides that, I have a Joker (Persona 5) nendoroid and some Love Live, Watamote and Miku prize figures. I really love anime figures, but I don't have space for them.
Help the industry and buy Blu-rays and DVD's.
Noragami is the best anime ever.

Despite how much I love anime and manga, I rarely buy merchandise but manga. Yeah, because they are expensive. I don't think they don't worth it, but all my income is used for living. Part time job gives you $40 and $200 for full time job a month here. Though, it also depends on your position. But that's how it is generally. And they are hard to find. Too many citizen and low amount of work-field. One volume manga each month is enough.

I got both "fake once" and original once + a special made Asuka figure.

I do have Raikou, Albedo, Rory, 2x Asuka figurens and a Ishtar one that cost me a bit of cash.

But then I do have a few fake once from china that cost around 75% less then the orginal once. I don't really have enough cash to buy all of the orginal figurens I want. So rather get a fake one.
But as I do have a fake one from X show or game I do have a orginal figuren from that game or show too.

I do try to support the manga creaters as good as I can.

And I do have some cheap orginal once too.

You can find orginal figurens cheap too, but the more they cost the harder it is to get them + they are very well made.

I do love this figuren aloot, but I woud say the price I pay for them is not wasted, not at all.

I have 13 scale figures 8 smaller ones (Nendo, etc.). But the most I spent on one was probably under $25. I got most of mine off of ebay. Used ones normally don't get over $20 on there, as long as they're not just released. There were a couple that I bought "Used-New in box" even. More popular series are more expensive though, all but 2 are from Index/Railgun series. The most expensive used figure I saw was a Shiro from No Game No Life that went for like $50 plus $5 shipping.

Main problems with figurines, for me at least, are:

1. Where will I put them? I don't really have a space to display them. I could leave them on my desk, but then I'd be the only one seeing them, and besides, they'd just collect dust that I'd have to clean off.

2. They're kinda tacky, the plastic ones that is. There are glass ones but they are few and far between, and also really expensive. Some plastic ones do have the advantage of being poseable, I'll admit, but those can get pretty pricey. But regardless, they still kinda look like a toy doll -- rather than, say, a legendary icon.

(And let's not even get into the tackiness of the fanservicey ones...)

I've been a pretty heavy collector of figures, merch, and manga for a couple of years. I'm not sure how much I've spent at this point, but I budget for it, so I save and pay all of my bills before I decide how much I'm allowed to spend. With a 2-person income, plus splitting rent three ways with my significant other and roommate, it's not hard to have extra money. I prioritize collecting over things like eating out, and I don't really have any other expensive hobbies.

My collection is here:

There are way more impressive collections than mine, though.

Figures are worth whatever you want to pay for them along with how much you want them.

I saw a foot-tall figure of Chie from Persona 4 for only $40, and I pounced on that shit like a kung fu tiger on a fsteak.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I've bought 2 over the years. Fairly decently priced and the quality of them is really something to admire. It's not something I'd spend a whole lot of money on though.

When they get dusty it's a pain to clean them that's for sure.

I have a Hitagi, Shinobu and Motoko Kusanagi (Arise version) figure. Price worthy, they were only 25 quid from the con I go to, but I love them. I know there are some figures that are 100+ quid but I never go for them.

I understand how you feel OP.

The sight of this Kurumi figure is hurting my heart over how beautiful she is.

But the sight of of the price is hurting every part of me over how high it is.

I know that this price is relatively low compared to some figures that can be sold to up to 900$ but still, I'm too poor to dream of owning something like this.

I thought the exact same thing at first, i told myself that they are pretty but way too expensive for a single figure, but then around Christmas in 2016 i caved and bought two scale figures that were on sale at AmiAmi.

Since then i've continued to buy more and more figures and other merchandise as well, at first i was more cautious with ordering but in time i began spending more and more to the point that now i have a heavy pre-orders almost every single month lol.

At first i said i'd buy merchandise only from Touken Ranbu but now i have Bungou Stray Dogs and Hataraku Saibou stuff on pre-order too, because from now on i want to support if able all anime i like so they can continue to get seasons! :D

I'm still upset that i didn't buy any merchandise for Shoukoku no Altair, Servamp and D.Gray-man Hallow though, since i had the chance but i didn't want to spend too much at that time because i already had pre-orders, but now i don't really care about that anymore, just wish they would get a second/third season so i could support them properly now!!!

Yeah, I think collecting figures overall is dumb and a waste of money since most of them are kinda meh and expensive as hell, but there are some which are indeed pretty beautiful (usually the most expensive ones). I always found this Mononoke figure to be pretty sweet as an ornamental figure, though:

Buying one of these is more or less a one-way ticket to dying alone in your room and having a team of people show up a month later to pick up your mummified corpse and steam clean its outline off the floor.

I own 11 figures (bought them over the course of 4-5 years). But I stopped buying them (actually I pre ordered a very last figure) because of some reasons:
No room
they get more and more expensive
the more you buy, the more devalues a single figure (emotional value)

I like the idea of collecting figures/statues of characters you're fond of. I collect them, but not overboard like some of those where you see shelves stacked to the brim with figures. For me, I collect a lot of anime and manga and put them in a bookshelf, I put figures from the corresponding story with the DVDs or Manga, too me it adds to the collection and gives you something sort of 3d to look at, its hard to explain. Id definitely give it a go, so id recommend finding a figure of one of your favourite characters and put it with your collection and see if it gives you the same effect it does to me.

I usually get 2-3 scales a year plus some smaller ones on the side. I personally go by the 1 figure per character rule (except for Saber because reasons). It also has to be a character or figure I really like. They're expensive and keep raising in price so it's getting harder to juggle them with Anime Blu rays and Video Games both of which I also collect.
