What a tease. I almost thought we would get a full kiss scene on TV.

It looks like the episode featured a lot of ChoCho as expected. She is the star of this show after all. I wasn't a big fan of hers but she did play her role as what she was expected.

I might sound like a bad guy but she got what she deserved, she forgot about her mission and she fell in love with a lady killer, maybe her personality will change after this mini arc because she is lame as she is now.

I know it's anime and all, but Cho-cho is 12 years old, while we don't know the age of the guy, but I'd guess it's at least 17-18. Just anime things, I guess...

So far I have always endured filler episodes, but this filler-arc is just a disappointment for me. We already had some Cho-cho episodes, or at least she's had enough attention. I'm sure they could have chosen a better character to focus on, and in a not so dramatic, weird way.

At least the Chunnin-exam ended, which means we are finally past the story of the Boruto movie. Somehow it just feels like an important milestone for me.

Also I know it doesn't exactly belong here, but I haven't had the chance to say it : the final fight in the previous arc was so epic!!! Hope to see more of that in the future.

Well since it's back I will just re-post from reddit (which seems to have a more dignified community of viewers):
So much for the westerners' lust for a kissing scene...
(apparently impure westerners made a fuss about them having a kissing scene for a 13 years old girl. Mhm.)
And so it comes out clear, just what kind of guy Tomaru is. Ashina might be a thot, but she is a passionate thot and want to produce something others could be proud of. For Tomaru everything is just means to satiate his enormous ego: after all his talk about caring for the good inside, he gone to harass a fat girl whom he could not even recognize of being a Chou-Chou (like, how many people in the world have this haircut? Alright, plot purposes). And so the theory gets updated... it is probably Ashina who hired the masked gas guy to get rid of Tomaru who is undermining her "perfect" drama. Like, who else could it be? A rivaling Mist village soap opera? The director who does not see love in them so he is going to gas them? I believe they can only twist the story so much.

But it was nice seeing Chou Chou get showered with reality a little. Poor dress.

It was the whole point of her episodes - to show children's delusions on, let's say, romance, and how easily they are crushed when encountering reality.

overall average episode. Nothing beats my ep 65 <3
Her haircut must have been real hard not to notice, but obviously it is just here for the plot resolution - if he did notice that the girl resembles Chou Chou, he would not reveal his true self to her, and we are back to square one. It is arguable that his picture of slim, feminine Chou Chou prevented him from seeing her in that fat, unsophisticated girl, who was also not wearing recognizable dress or uniform..

next time they should adapt it as a more real situation… it felt fake af tbh.

I could produce several defensive statement of why he did not recognize her, but the reality of things was clearly toned down for the plot purposes, and I would really like to ask everyone to go along with it, as it is not THAT out of reality.

Isn't there some saying about how you should never meet your heroes? I guess this is why. Honestly though I couldn't care less about what's been going on in these last couple episodes, since I don't like Chocho.

Now the truth has been revealed and, surprise surprise, Tomaru is a dick who doesn't even recognize Chocho because he's just THAT shallow. I think we all knew deep down that he'd be that kind of guy. Well, now we get to unfortunately spend another episode on this mini-arc's resolution. The faster we move on from this, the better.

I am really a Naruto fan (at least regarding the manga) and naturally I am watching the respective sequel. But I've got to say that after seeing that this filler is going to be more than 3 episodes I am disgusted. I mean that wouldn't that big of an issue if the main arcs were good. But they aren't either. The only good part were those they just took from the movie (and that only for nostalgic reasons)

i'm usually all for defending Boruto episodes, cause even if they aren't the best, it's still Boruto/Naruto, where even the fillers usually are enjoyable.......... but damn, this arc is being a little too boring even for me...

If you say "fan" does it mean you understand what Naruto stands for? The philosophy, the symbolism, the personal growth? Because Boruto stays true to Naruto so far. What's more it is exploring our modern society applied to their Ninja world. These three Chou Chou character stories are about childish delusions of romance and personal growth after facing reality. Do you see it?

This filler arc is just so incredibly boring... I mean I already new that before it started because of the titles but...
And I really dislike Chocho - did it from the very beginning. She is boring, annoying and her character is pretty bad, too. I don't like fillers at all but I knew Chocho fillers had to be the worst. I wasn't wrong.
It's sadistic that they give us this awful arc directly after literally the best Boruto episode so far

Cho Cho is my favourite of the new characters... but this arc is just terrible. Boruto's filler can be worse than the original Naruto's at some points. If this had to happen it should have been one episode, but this is just terribly written, a bunch of bad jokes, demeaning characters for no reason... its just a boring to insulting waste of time. We already had Kagemasa for our random actor plot we don't need another. Unless something important happens I'm skipping the rest

I'm glad they do arc focus on supporting character but this one is boring, I don't get why the actors didn't recognize Chocho even if she is skinnier. Next episode will be the last one for the arc and after that we have another filler.

The entirety of the episode was quite annoying in my opinion. I'm still aggrovated by the fact Cho Cho is just able to summon Butterfly Mode like it's nothing. I honestly really hated Tomaru flat out telling her she was ugly though, that was just uncalled for. As a side note, I really hope the filler doesn't continue too long. I feel like Boruto is starting to get a little better with how the plot is going at the moment, but of course, we'll see how it turns out.

Sometimes while watching Boruto, I start to think where did this whole anime franchise went to. Thinking back to the beginning of Naruto, with Zabuza and Orachimaru and how it was trying to be a 'dark ninja anime'... to these... soap opera episodes? I really do not understand the transition here.

I get the idea of Boruto, but I'm pretty much sure you don't need the story to turn to a Cho cho soap opera.

I'm quiet disappointed with this series except for a few instances.

Man I was typing in the Crucnhyroll comments, trying to shorten what I was trying to say because of the maximum 240 character thing and then I thought, "Oh wait, the forums on MAL are back up". And man, I've got a lot to type.

I don't really want to say 'poor Chouchou' because she knew from the start that people preferred skinnier girls which was why she was going out of her way to appear skinny in the first place. In other words, she knew she took a risk and so she knew this could happen. So it's less of a "poor Chouchou" and more of a, "yeah, I guess that didn't work out. It's a bummer, but count your losses" type of thing.

But if you think about it, Chouchou has been making it seem like she's perfect in her usual form in nearly all these episodes, so this really suggests that Chouchou had these insecurities all along and simply pretended to be totally fine with herself. She'd often build herself up, but apparently this has all been a defense mechanism.

If you're familiar with the Twilight Zone, there is a character who fits this idea to a T. I'll have her scene in the spoiler, but I'll explain for context. In this episode, there's a self-playing piano that, when working, makes someone tell what they feel/what's on their mind. The laughing jerk in the video has invited a bunch of people for a party just to see what they're all about. Marge arrives and she's the type that's the life of the party, always making jokes about how she's single and about her weight as if none of that actually bothers her. So of course, everyone's convinced that those things don't bother her and they laugh along with her. The clip in the spoiler shows how she really feels about herself... or really wishes to be.

"I pretend that I'm a snowflake: white and tiny and perfectly formed. I float on the air of a pale blue moon at night...
I'm never lonely. I'm beautiful and slender... oh and I'm loved."

I'm getting that vibe from Chouchou and it's kinda breaking my heart. It's like she knows-- you know she knows. But gosh it still hurts her no matter how much she's tried to just deal with it.

I actually really like what they're trying to do with Chouchou and I don't mind them exploring her through fillers-- actually, I always found that being able to explore characters more was one of the benefits of fillers as long as they actually did so. There is something a little deeper than Choji's past "I'm big and I'm insecure about it"-- which was totally fine by the way! Chouchou's case just adds another layer and changes an existing layer. I feel like it goes well on her. I don't particularly like her actions, but what's more important to me is understanding her actions, and I've got that.

Here's what Chouchou thought was one of her only chances to really have someone, and then nothing's working out. Of course she's frustrated. And what Tomaru said is probably what she's been thinking all along (though it's probably not true), 'That ring is something you'll probably never be able to wear'. So she's lashing out at whoever is around her that just seems to be putting a block in what she's seeing as her only chance. And to her, that only chance is more important to her than the mission. And I get that too. The thing is, she became deluded, thinking that it might have actually worked, but she did get her reality check and I hope that gets her thinking about what's really important for her.

...

BUT DAMN SHE CALLED MITSUKI'S LOOKS DISCOUNT WORTHY. HOOOOO.
I hope she apologizes, not that Mitsuki probably cares, but I kinda think she won't. Not really because of her personality but because the production probably doesn't think it's important to include. I think it would be nice to include though.

I'm really glad they're including episodes like this. I was worried that the stakes were going to be high for the whole rest of the show when they hardly even touched the characters. A lot of the characters haven't really had their time to actually grow, so I feel that episodes like this are really necessary. Like yo, we still just have basic profiles for most of these kids, so I was like, "Nooo you're just going to have things proceed when people don't really care about the characters yet?

In Naruto, it was a little different since you had, in my opinion, more time spent on the kids during the chunin exam and invasion. For Boruto, the chunin exam and invasion, which is meant to be a crucial character development arc for many, was instead more or less spent on Boruto and the cause, effect, and redemption of Boruto's cheating or need to be seen by an "absent figure" specifically. We haven't spent quality time with these other kids (with some exceptions like Sarada, and Mitsuki kinda)-- not really enough to break them out of their default four faces.

In Naruto, we had been able to explore more than the default faces of the kids not only through controlled experiences but also experiences mostly out of their control too-- like experiences that actually pushed them to the brink and allowed them to show more faces. So far, in Boruto, we just haven't been able to spend too much time on that, so this type of episode, though not the crucial, lives-on-the-line situations that often build characters, helps at least. Because honestly, if I don't care about the characters then I don't care about what they're doing in the plot which often makes me not care about the plot and in turn makes me not care about the show.

I've always liked Cho Cho, and I really don't see why people seem to hate her. She's a character overflowing with confidence, yet the joke surrounding her is always "yeah, but you're fat...". It's kinda strange they went a weird route with this arc, making her tsundere-ish and afraid to be herself, a person who knew she was beautiful because SHE said she was.

There was a way to do this arc without making her lose her confidence in her true self, but they pretty much... fucked everything up. So far, the only person who has walked away from this looking better for it is Sarada.

  • 4:22 How much do you wanna bet Chocho is gonna lose her composure during the kiss and turn back into her normal form?
  • 4:38 Also, I just realized something. Chocho is 12-13 years old while Tomaru is clearly older than 16—if I had to guess he's probably in his late teens or early twenties. Kind of weird that they're doing a kissing scene between an underage girl and a grown-up, yeah?
  • 8:08 Tomaru seems kind of suspicious. I think he may have sent the death threat to himself in order to lure the genins to the set. For what reason, I'm not sure.
  • 12:49 Man, I would be dying on the inside if I was Chocho right now. Imagine catfishing someone for this long.
  • 17:19 I just realized, if Chocho expands right now, both the dress and the ring will most likely break.
  • 17:54 Yep. Called it. Ashina won't be happy about that, that's for sure.
  • 19:08 Oh man, they all have terrible perception skills. Same hair and skin color, yet they can't tell it's the same person. Jesus..
  • 20:23 Wow. Tomaru's a piece of shit. I saw it coming a mile away, but that was unnecessarily rude...
  • 21:38 There's the Ame ninja. He's got some kind of Kankuro-esque makeup going on from the looks of it.
Rating: 1/5

A pretty slow episode, even more so than the last. It had some interesting moments, and it looks like Chocho finally snapped out of her horniness so that's good, but this arc has yet to impress me—and I don't think it will.
