This is turning into a real tearjerker. Though tbh this episode is sort of too much like the last one. It feels a bit formulaic. Oh, Violet gets a letter request, it just so happens it's about something sad. It's been like this for the last 4 episodes. Which was fine because at least Violet was getting character development.
Episode 9 something sad happened and she empathised. Last episode something sad happened and she cried. Hell, I'm not ashamed to say I cried with her. This episode something sad happened and she cried and while yeah it was sort of sad I didn't really feel anything.
Each episode feels like my heart is burning. I love the episode because it could relate to Violet's story. Seeing her becoming good in her job makes me feel proud of her. Yes, we can't erase the fact that she killed a lot of soldiers before but everyone can make decisions to live freely while bearing those sins with them. And I've read spoilers from other users and I also prefer...
Gilbert being dead, I mean his death was a huge part of Violet's growth and learning how to move on and becoming an independent individual striving to live and serve others, KyoAni should think about this carefully.
HereticHunter said: Worst episode so far, Everything was so rushed, random and very anticlimactic.
like: "OMG my customer is on the middle of a war, lets rush there because why fucking not. It doesn't matter if the enemy Sees me, I'm invincible lol, if they see me they will surrender because the plot demands it"
Then it comes the "emotional" part that only has lasts 5 minutes, and another "emotional" part that lasts another 5 minutes... THE END
The whole moment with the soldier and his letter would have been great if it lasted long enough. Same goes for the letter that Violet delivered.
That was what I felt about the episode, inconsistent pace and bad execution, but if you want me to explain so be it.
KyoAni Expects you to have a 180º and feel emotional all of a sudden. Some of the stories on this anime are very rushed (with the exception of Violet's Past with Gilbert which didn't suck because it had the adequate pacing) The pace on some stories is way too fast and it ruins the entire experience. It is very hard to make a good story out of 1 single episode because there isn't enough time to portray what the episode want to express. There are times when it works because it was done correctly (I.E Osomatsu-San Ep 18 of the Second Season, or in Violet's Case, the episode where she jumps in the water was well done too). These stories would have been better if the pace were slower by using at least 2 episodes.
Another thing with this anime is that it was way too overhyped before it even air, the expectations were set way too high and when I saw what it really was I felt disappointed, it isn't as good as many people say, but is not bad either (trailers were also quite misleading and hype inducing)
Now about this episode, do you remember that cliffhanger when someone that knew Violet hated on her because she was writing letters for people with the hands of a murderer? what we got the next week? and out of place episode. This time, it starts very abruptly without any build up. Then it rushes through it, like damn, I couldn't even feel bad for the soldiers who died, neither the soldier who was the focus this time. Like I said before, the story could have been better if they didn't rush it like that.
Like people have said already, there are aspects of this episode and the whole anime adaptation that has felt rushed or poorly developed.
TLDR: I would still favor the anime over the source even with all the cuts and/or retelling of events in the story since the pros FAR outweigh the cons of the adaptation with its visual story telling, world building, and subtle character depth over the novels. (For example Cattelya has no character at all in the novel, there is no indication of cultural or historical context in any of the country's location, etc.)
Yes, that episode of Leon was nice, but just weird after the finale of Dieftrid one.
Well, certainly not using Witchcraft was nice, but still kinda odd for the soldiers to not try a little bit.
Although not all stories benefit of having 2 episodes, some of them could improve from it, so lets leave it there with 50/50

This episode has shown she has come full circle to her quest to find the answer to her question (her motivation to become a doll) - What the words of the colonel (love) meant.
SalmonSandwich said: Yes my favorite chapter in the novel is adapted. Again reiterating the fact that they removed witchcraft added so much realism to the adaptation (even if she still basically freaking parachuted and ninja-ed her opponents lol.) Imagine that same scene, but with a battle axe the size of a literal lamp pole instead... That was the light novel version lol.
Also changing Violet character slightly allows the viewer to empathize with her post war self and her resolve to not kill WAY more. She doesn't even use weapons for self defense throughout the whole anime after the war, showing the difference between her anime counterpart resolve and her light novel one where she does use weapons (including her damn mega sized battle axe, a pistol, carotid piercing needles, throwing knives, etc) for self defense only.
Seems like they aren't going to adapt chapter 10's prison story in the TV run so they sort of added elements of it with the confrontation scene in this episode with the enemy soldier.
Next episode will probably be
flying letter festival and Dietfried's resolution with Violet. This is where we will find out if Kyoto Animation will keep Gilbert dead or alive. (Please keep him dead I beg you... He doesn't need to be alive! There is no narrative significance to him being magically alive for romance sake. It would basically spit on her growth as a character who overcame grief and became a independent character by her own efforts.)
I don't think that him being alive will 'spit on her growth' on the contrary...she can understand now the meaning of her emotions...she can feel and know what that is...and this idea, this is accentuated in the final chapter when she knows what she's feeling when Gilbert does or says something...it's like, Gilbert is the final point in her growth...he's the only one she could ever love in a romantic way (it really says that) so if he is dead that means that a part of her will allways be incomplete...at least that's how I see this...him being alive will only crown her growth, will make it complete...she will not go back to the same old her because she can't...that would be just (maybe) the final turning point in her life
I agree. I think the only other person that she could fall in love with, who would be that final point for her and would fit with everything she's gone through and how she's grown emotionally.
When Violet saved the soldier from the other soldiers I was so relieved that he was saved, and then the rest of the episode happened and I became really sad. Great episode!
If it can't be said here- could someone please PM me to explain about the comment by a number of users here about Violet using Witchcraft..? How could she use witchcraft?
That first statement by the user (SalmonSandwich) should have been caught by a moderator (to at least put that in a spoiler), since that isn't anime only material!
I'm confused. A number of users are confused here (thanks to the use of the word "witchcraft", not all of us have access to the novels, after all).
What? Was Violet a witch, or something? Please explain. Now that its been mentioned, someone should explain. Please?

I believe this is a core issue that sad, emotional stories of the week will face compared to say,monster/action/comedy of the week episodes in other anime. More emotional stories need a lot more build-up unlike action or comedy to get the desired effect from the more experienced viewed and execution alone, even if good, just ain't gonna cut it. I would've rather had 2-3 through eps arcs with one or two single ep cases throughout the anime since some, depending on whether the job Violet's taking fits in 1 ep or needs more.
The fact that she's kinda invincible thus doesn't need to fear anything doesn't help either. In fact, every ep that reminds me of that is harder to enjoy. The anime goes for realistic setting & down-to-earth atmosphere, and then there's Violet...Yea, that don't work KyoAni.
I was expecting to see how the Post staff welcome Violet once she's back, their reactions, emotions and stuff but instead we got Violet crying... again...
These letters were lame too.
edit: I saw some images from novel back when the series started and was really hyped to see Violet carrying huge axe and killing people (there's no fun if no one dies) but instead she just used some karate moves and they just... gave up?
It was few soldiers with guns vs one ninja girl, they could atleast try some more...

I'm watching anime since 2012. I also play games, sometimes.
Don't bother me if you want to 'become friends' or things like that.
It's tiresome. I know you just want to collect some meaningless numbers.
Thought: How many people sparked H. Charlotta just for blue pot?
crotchexplorer said: when Violet gave the bloodied cloth to Maria seemed kinda unreasonable
Well you could interpret that as Violet still having flaws in her emotional empathy development, like how she bluntly wrote her first letter as is back in ep2-3.
That, and it acts as the proof these letters are from him. They are written with a type writer, so it's not like they could recognize his handwriting. When people hear about the death of a loved one, if there isn't proof, they will hold on to hope for the rest of their lives that it was a lie. The blood on it gives physical proof that he was injured, honestly, I don't see it as cruel or unreasonable. I think giving them true proof that the letters are from him and more then her word that he died is true kindness because now they can properly begin healing.
Another great episode, am a big fan of sad emotional episode especially related to war, it was so cruel that they wanted to kill him even though he was from their own country and that ending was so touching.
Tbh it's a terrible episode. I'm baffled that a clear majority voted 5/5 for this.
1. It's ridiculous to miraculously find the dying dude in the middle of nowhere. Fighting the rifle guys head on... and win? Well...
2. How did she even find that cozy cottage??? Did she kill some old couple who owned that place off screen?
3. She didn't even know the addresses of the recipients. Maybe she was already told off screen, so, ok...
4. For that dude to be dictating into late at night with blood still leaking out, she might as well save his ass first. Maybe he didn't have to die then.
I was so distracted by these thoughts I forgot to cry at the ending. *shrugs* I don't know man. It's just... terrible.

Battle axe? That reminded me of a scene in the initial teaser. Might this scene https://youtu.be/0CJeDetA45Q?t=17s be depicting that moment?

''Witchcraft" is a giant battle ax with which Violet used to fight. It was specially made for her at Gilbert's demand. It was very unrealistic (much bigger than her and if I remember correctly it had some kind of chain too with which she strangled people) so I'm glad they cut it out in the anime. You can catch a glimpse of it in the first CM.

Thank you. That explains a lot. Much appreciated. I was thinking (based on what little I was seeing on here) that she had used magic or something to fly from that plane. This makes more sense.

That's why I felt this episode so bad, everything were way too convenient to be even real. I find even more weird that the soldiers didn't even bother to follow her into that cottage and I don't know, throw a bomb or something.

There are smoke in the battlefield. Violet already found dead body. For a men carrying a wound man, I do not think it will be far away for airplane to search them.

Anbandon house because of war.

So. I kind of agree it is rush. They skip a lot of info. which will make the story convincing. but on the other hand, the espiode is about to show violet motivation for not letting anyone die. The sad feeling is not the goal here. For 24mins, they have to cut soldier scene.
Just as usual, there are little, subtle things and scenes that make me happy and I see a lot of potential in. I really liked the little dialogue scene where the soldiers sit and talk about the Doll advertising. The world is just so interesting and could be used to tell some great and powerful stories.
But then there is this cute loli super soldier who does the naruto run and is just so great at writing too for some reason... cant take her character seriously.
Let the world stay, scale down the melodrama, replace Violet with that red-haired girl and it would be amazing.

Yep! thats the scene, alot of scenes have been changed from the original source.
I was a fool to think that we wouldn't get a sad ending this week. I couldn't have imagined being in Aiden's shoes as he was running away for his life, not wanting to die, and then again when he already knew he was going to die. That was hard to watch.
I'm all caught up, and there's only 2 more episodes left. I'm even more sad now 😭
Another sad Episode, but not as emotional as the last week Episode tho'... That Episode hit me hard.
Well, It's the reality of a war. Anyone could lost their loved one in the war, especially the family of the soldiers who joins the battle... This Episode done It right imo.
I love Violet Evergarden but the show is so bloody sad. Basically, every single episode featured death or some sort of loss and this was no exception. Three more episodes to go. I know that some folks don't want a happy ending but I for one could do with a happy ending and yes I am one of those who would like a romantic happy ending :-)
I enjoyed this one and got a bit sad watching it, but I can't help but feel some things were weirdly convenient and the episode was kinda... Rushed, I guess. I liked how Violet's character development showed on this one though.
Feels slightly compressed in the name of time (sad) but I did like the changes - Violet is more realistic in his not pulling out Witchcraft (for non-LN readers that is her lamppost-sized battle axe in the Army days) and resorting to just passive-aggressively deterring off the enemy soldiers.
Also in the LN, Violet reacts much more coldly when delivering the grave news to her family. In fact, she even goes to as far as carrying the deceased Aiden back to his hometown. I actually like this change here as it shows the more human side of Violet who's becoming more and more aware of her emotions & feelings from others. Also I feel Aiden's war grave burial Violet did was more appropriate decision.
Seeing Violet break down over the fact she couldnt save Aidan.. Killer. She will truly go anywhere for someones request. She really has come quite far with her emotional journey.
I wonder if a part of her realised that she also couldn't save Gilbert and thus she was sorry for that too or if she has truly moved beyond the Major by this point.
My thoughts about this episode? There are so, so many. I'll keep it short though, as I've just seen this episode and it really got to me. Personally, I'm not able to agree with those who were saying that the episode felt rushed. I think the pacing and the depth were very good. Good enough to engage you with Aidens' story, but still deep enough to sympathize with him. Also, there happened so much in this episode with Violet. Regrets. Responsibility. The taken responsibility of hers' to go onto this job, although she wouldn't have been allowed to go, if she had asked them. Actually, I think she took the decision to go when she overheard the conversation, but if she had rushed into the room at that point, Claudia would have denied her wish to go. Violet knew that she wasn't allowed to go, but she hasn't been prohibited to do so, which gave her the possibility to go on her own. Suffering. There was so much suffering in this episode. Not everything of it has been shown in the episode itself, but it was build up outstandingly up to this episode. It must have been truly cruel to Violet, who started to get to her own feelings. Going back to war and to relive the loss of a loved one. Another more. Another person who was loved but also didn't get to experience love in it's full potential. At least he got to know that Maria loved him. Gilbert didn't get that. Violet wasn't able to respond (as far as we have seen it currently) to his feelings. Even if she felt the same. Another person who she was not able to save. Another person who died next to her, whom she couldn't save. That plus the awareness, that she had been killed so many others, who also had loved ones who wanted them to come back... Poor Violet, this episode must have been so rough on her. Living through her own tragedy again and again. Even not being able to let out her own feelings although her being truly sad because of these happenings. She had to be strong. She had her given responsibility to deliver the letter and even to confront the feelings of the bereaved. That must have been so though on her. I'm so glad Aidens' mother hugged her, I'm so glad that they thanked her. Thanked her that she did bring back Aiden to them, indeed. Even if she might not understand that she did. Even if she might think that her doing was the opposite. Even if Violet thinks that she let him die. Took him away from them, because of not being able to save him. Because of not being earlier.
The content was pretty generic and rushed, but it wasn't horrible. They probably introduced that idea of a civil war just to show that the last chapter will definitely be adapted. That talk about the intercontinental train as well. In the novel, it was a war between 2 separate countries fighting over an oilfield drilling facility. In fact, that was what Aiden's army was trying to secure. His side was very weak due to the fact that the soldiers mainly consisted of men who were never trained before.
Come to think of it... Has Violet cried in every single episode since episode 7? I'm pretty sure she did... Just checked, and I don't think she cried in episode 8.
Here's the longer versions of his dictations for the letters if you want to read:
“Mom. Even though I had told you... that I’d become a baseball player… to get money for you to restore our house… I’m sorry. Dad… Dad, I had wanted you to watch more of my matches. I was really happy… when you told me that you liked seeing me hit the ball. I… I had actually started baseball because I wanted to be praised by you. I feel that if there was… anything else you’d praised me for… it would have been an option too. There’s nothing more fortunate… than having been born as the son of you both. I wonder why. I’ve… always… been so happy… and, well… I’ve gone through quite a lot of hardships… but… I never thought I’d die like this. I didn’t think this would happen. Like, normally… normally… people imagine themselves becoming adults, finding a lover, getting married, having kids… I-I… I… I thought I would be able to take care of you. I didn’t think… that I would be shot without really knowing why… and die in a country so far away from you. I’m sorry. I’m also sad… but the two of you… clearly… will be sadder. I was supposed… to come back to you safely… since I’m your only son. I was… supposed to come back. But… I won’t be able to. I’m sorry. Sorry.” He resented so much not being able to see his parents again and felt so guilty that his tears recurrently halted his words. “If… the two of you end up being reborn… and becoming a married couple… I’ll go to where you are. And then… I want you to give birth to me again. Please. I didn’t mean for things to end like this. I had wanted… to become happier… I was supposed… to show my happy self… to you. That’s the truth. So… please. Dad and Mom, you pray too. Make me your son again… please.
"Maria, are you… doing good? I wonder… if you’re… lonely… since I’m not there. It would be a problem… if it turns out that you’re crying everyday… but I’ve… been seeing your crying face… since we were kids… and it’s cute, so you shouldn’t… cry in front of men. I wonder if you remember… when you… confessed to me. You had… told me to not reminisce… to that time, but… y’know, I… I… was really… really… really… happy back then. I was really… so happy… That was probably… the peak… of my life… for real. I mean, I can’t remember anything else. Much more… than when I… won a baseball tournament… or was… praised by Dad… the thing that made me… the happiest… …was being told… that you… were in love with me. To tell the truth… I used to… only see you as a little sister… but you’re… too adorable, so… I soon… fell for you… You will… become even more gorgeous from now on, right? Aah, I’m jealous… of the guys that will be able to see it. If I could… I had… wanted to… make you… my bride… build a small cottage… and live… in that countryside, with you. I… loved you. I love you… Maria. Maria… Maria… Maria, I don’t wanna die… Maria, I wanna… go back to you… Maria… wait… for me… Even if… it’s just… my soul… I’ll come back… but it’s… fine if I’m… not your ‘only’. Just wait. Just… don’t forget. Don’t… forget… the first man… that you… confessed to. I also… won’t… forget. Even by… the gates… of heaven… I won’t… forget. Maria… don’t… forget me."
Thank you SO much for sharing the full letter here. Those letters hit me even more after the episode. Actually, I think they did a pretty good job in deciding what to include into the episode and what not. For example, the baseball might have been very important in the novel (I don't know about it, I haven't read the novels yet), but even without it being included, this episode has been outstanding. When I hear about witchcraft or the axe in the comments, I really have to say that I'm glad that they removed it. Violet is badass enough even without an axe. OR WITCHCRAFT. Wth? I really hope Kyoani doesn't add it. I think such fantasy elements might ruin the story and the potential of the anime. It's already magical enough. Violet being able to walk on water (even for short), her miraculous being able to avoid patrons of several soldiers and also taking them down. Or with scenery like the one in this episode with a snowy night sky and snowflakes that kinda look like magic might happen. No, Violet Evergarden does not need more magic, witchcraft respectively.
crotchexplorer said: when Violet gave the bloodied cloth to Maria seemed kinda unreasonable
Actually, I think it was reasonable for her to bring that cloth back to Maria. First, it must have been be her cloth - which would make it reasonable to the "old" Violet and second, I really can imagine the cloth being part of a promise. For example, that Maria gave it to him to remember her and to come back to her. If I were to say, he were meant to come back from the war to bring her the cloth back. Of course, to come back to her, too. But the cloth (and the photograph, too) is something which Aiden could onto to. All the nights during the war, he held onto it. Remembering her. Probably, experiencing for the first time to be away for that long, also burdened with the hardships of the war. While loosing companion after companion. The cloth is indeed something very personal. All the time during the war he held onto it. Maria must know that, so in a kind of sense, Violet brings Aiden back to his family. His last thoughts, his love for his parents, his love and even the confession that he really wanted to be with her, which he hasn't shown that much before. Even his regrets. His pain and sorrow. Furthermore, Violet gave them even more. She brought them the doubtlessness that their son and loved one didn't die alone in sadness without anyone. Someone was there. Violet. Delivering his last thoughts and wishes back to them. I know it must have been painful for them, but I understand that they thanked Violet.
That's truly outstanding story writing. Story writing at it's best. Story writing you don't see everyday. A storywriting that made me share tears.

Yaaaaa, was the first episode of Violet Evergarden (probably - I don't really remember) which made share tears. Before I even was aware of it, the tears were running over my cheeks.
Not many anime/series/movies are able to reduce me to tears. This episode was able to do it. Poor violet. Aidens' words and Violets sorrow took me down.

Meh. Episode felt forced, especially after the previous one, which it certainly can't even compare to. Unlike the previous episode, I felt nothing for this guy, his family, and cute girlfriend. Wasn't enough time to get to know him, so that's probably the reason why. Maybe it was just the execution. The family thanking her at the end was too melodramatic for me.
I hope the remaining episodes won't continue to be sad like this, since it's getting predictable now.
This show is so amazing for me so far. Violet's development is so moving and each story is incredibly emotional. This was another sad and impactful episode.
Again, a sad episode, this time a soldier that never will arrive at home but yes his feelings,in a letter, for his parents and girlfriend!!!
Again Violet cried, this time in front of the parents of the soldier, and this means that evolution of Violet how human is near to be completed, although she has yet marks of a dog-soldier!!! :/
War. War never changes. And so does this sad anime with deaths and all that. It's the usual although the repetition is getting redundant and I'm finding myself looking for something a little different.
