-she ded
-dude same
-the OP makes the show seem like it could be tons of fun, actually
-"pudding is a drink" we livin in 2018 and mari's livin in 3018
-mari's a goody two-shoes
-seems like a wonderful day to go to the beach
-is that a fuckin gamecube
-somehow mari seems pretty endearing so far
-wait were those transportation disasters references to certain animovies
-and thus begins mari's venture into a money laundering scheme
-the eyecatches seem like they'll be fun
-this is one elaborate fuckin bathroom
-yo no game no life anniversary collab
-one million dollar yen
-come to think of it the entire school just has this cozy feel to it
-mari's pretty adorable
-shirase got named after a boat? or was the boat named after her

So one thing that stood out to me about the show is the backgrounds. Something about literally all of them was just very soothing to look at, especially within the school. Maybe it's because of how generally muted the colors are and making it seem like the place is sort of like a safe and cozy place or something. I normally don't consider art when trying to rate shows why does it feel like i keep writing that but the backgrounds just complement the types of hijinks Mari was pulling in this episode. Like, you have these pretty, nondescript backgrounds scattered all throughout the episode and then you have this supercharged girl going off about going on adventures and stuff. I thought the contrast between the general atmosphere of the school and Mari's general playful capriciousness was pretty entertaining. I also happened to enjoy Mari's general disposition a lot more than I was expecting to, and that's probably because I personally find it cute that she comes off as just a goody-two shoes kid who really doesn't understand the world just yet. However, this means that when Mari actually does go on a journey and get the thrill she's been seeking, there's no telling how I'd view her character then. She's pretty great currently so that's really what matters. Not sure if any of the other characters currently appeal to me as much as Mari does, but the shopkeeper girl seems pretty cute. In general Mari's closest friend and Shirase seem decent enough.

Aside from the general atmosphere and the MC's magnetic personality, another big motivator for me to continue to watching this show were the OP/ED sequences, as well as the eyecatch in the middle of the episode. There's a certain playfulness in these three sequences that I think sets this show apart from the other shows I've watched. I think it's just that the OP in particular seems to be goofy people doing goofy things, which is something I absolutely love to see in the comedy shows that I watch. Right now this show seems super promising to me.

Shirase's story is a liitttle dramatic, what with her mother having disappeared and the girls harassing her. But still a very sweet backstory for the three girls we've met so far, a nice hook for the series. I for one like the art style.

I've also wanted to travel to the Antarctic for a long time and know a few people who've worked there, so I've got to like this :D And while I'm not obsessed with Antarctica in particular, this episode did make me feel just a smidgen of regret I haven't made it there yet, not a bad thing ;)

Yeah going to Antarctica is not unrealistic, it all depends on what you're up for doing (options for non-scientists range from janitorial jobs to paying your way as a tourist...) and what presence your country has there (as we'll learn with just a bit of fictionalisation).

Great start. I have to admit that I started watching it because of its amazing cast, but I loved this first episode. I also loved Mari, I liked her personality and obviously extra points for being voiced by Inori Minase.

That NGNL reference with "Chlammy" in the background. xD

Ok just to finally put and end to the "run away from home" thing, after the scene on the bathroom when Shirase, is talking about how everyone tells her is impossible to go the Antartica (exactly at 13:09 minute), one of the teachers is holding a club registration form from Shirase, to make the Antartica Club whose goal is travel to the Antartica but she's the only member (so know we know how the next 2 girls will met). And about the end, THEY JUST WENT TO Hiroshima to see the ship (that was only a few hours by train).
So calm down people they'll not runaway to the other side of the world without their parents permission, they will make a club so they will set out together.
Btw freaking love the episode, characters, cast and the direction was beautifully executed (in my humble opinion of course).

Am I the only one that feels like the characters seem really bolded out or shiny at times and bugged by it? They just seem like they're out of place because of that sometimes. It could just be the style and while not bad I personally don't like it.

Otherwise, this show looks quite interesting and I'm looking forward to see how it turns out.

MC didn't have any goals, so she needed the Shia LaBeouf speech of "JUST DO IT!" A simple but uncommon premise, light humor, and clean art. We're going for a ride. Is this going to be 12-13 episodes? Because I don't think that's going to be enough. Life on the ship, visiting countries, and reaching and exploring Antarctica is going to take a lot of episodes...

I was very curious as to what this show was since it popped up on Crunchyroll, so I decided "screw it" and watched it. I thought it was really well constructed. The visuals were stunning, and the writing was very strong. It appears to be leaning towards a slice-of-life show, but the characters aren't just doing things for the sake of it. One makes it clear she wants to overcome anxiety and live out the remainder of her youth through exploration by doing something big and daring. Another has a clear focus to travel to Antarctica to find her missing mother and at the same time prove the haters wrong. The characters are well written and the pace of the first episode is actually refreshing. It may take a while to see if this journey will have a happy ending or not, but I'm excited to see where it goes now. I'm definitely going to keep watching.

Also, big props to Atsuko Ishizuka for her directing. It's clear from her previous work that she has a knack for appealing visual aesthetic so it's great to see a show where the writing matches the visuals. Big fan of the darker tones in certain areas. Madhouse are gonna smash it out of the park with this one.

Oh, and the black haired girl? Shirase, was it? She's a babe. AND she's voiced by Kana Hanazawa?

Yeah I think I'm gonna really like this show.

So how would a bunch of high school girls have a chance at tracking someone down on Antarctica if like actual professional explorers couldn't? And if her mother is actually there still she'd have to have lived alone on Antarctica for 3+ years now which seems highly questionable

But some awkward logic asides, seems like a fun show. Unusual setting and top tier VA cast

that was really REALLY good for first episode of an original series, might be good start anime for 2018 and good motivation to start something to break normal everyday life pattern.
hope it is part of the high school club trip instead of runaway adventure but that is not an issue for me, her friend w/ glasses is not part of the adventure :(

The chaaracter design isn't anything special, and the introduction of characters wasn't that exotic in any way. However, characters so far are likeable and have you rooting for them in your head already, which is nice. The logic of this anime isn't really there, as highschoolers have a very improbably chance of actually getting to Antarctica, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue. I feel the very end was cut off a little but that may just be me.

Anyone else see that NGNL reference?

Ugh. Hearing Hanazawa's voice yet again is so fucking annoying. She's on a journey to ruin a character to me again because all I can hear is every fucking character she voiced in the character she's voicing in this anime--which is not a good thing. STOP.

Colour me impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode. The characters are likeable and one can identify with Kimari's feelings of fear about venturing out into the world alone. Shiraze's motive for going to Antarctica seem a bit questionable, she does realize that her mother has been missing for years and is probably dead, right? Not that the motive matters a lot or anything.

Now, the art, Madhouse is known to have better animation capabilities than your average studio but this show seems to have a mish-mash of two styles. The character animations reminded me of Tsuki ga Kirei while the background art style seems to be similar to the BG art style of Hibike Euphonium. Not that the art style is bad but it feels a bit incomplete.

I don't want to say that this show will turn out great because a LOT of animes have great first episode but then turn into trash by the end of it but I will say that I have a good feeling about this one.

I feel something.

Maybe her mother was rescued by some research centres in Antarctica. You know many countries set up research Centres in
Antarctica. But for some reason she chose not to return.

Though this theory will be true only if her mother is alive.

I honestly don't know why this episode isn't more highly rated. I thought it was really, really great! It introducd out characters perfectly well, and though plotpoints moved quickly it never felt rushed, and the background art was really great. It's a very beautiful anime, and this carries over into the OP which had really good cinematography (song was just "meh" though).

Anyway, they've already reached a boat that would go to Antarctica, but obviously they can't go there that soon, so I'm very curious to see what happens next.

Very bland and underwhelming first episode, but since it was well under the radar and is the first show of the new season, this series has now gotten a decent amount of followers. The animation and music are second-tier at best and the setting is very unrealistic. The main characters are annoying and uninteresting imo, but a lot of people seem to like them, so I guess I'm in the minority here.

Tried it out after hearing people really liking this first ep and came out hating the feeling of wanting the next ep. MC girl's fear for the unknown is very relatable and I am in full support of them. However, 1 million yen doesn't seem like that much though...

This was good. It wasn't the most impressive experience but then again this should be, by structure and purpose, an anime that takes its time to warm up and I'm fine with that. The point is not that it doesn't have flaws (while Mari is certainly relatable, the way she verbalizes her issues is kind of off-putting at this point), but that I can see myself getting used to them and developing a deeper attachment to the series. Perhaps I shouldn't say "good", as "promising" seems more fitting, but I had a good time, I felt good vibes both with the episode and the future prospects of the show, and above all it has charm, with its colouring, its general tone and the very nice chemistry between Mari and Shirase. Looking forward to this.

Also can someone explain where the "Sora" came from in the title? Kinda confusing seeing Sora(空) when the kanji says Uchuu(宇宙). Heck even the english title says Universe when usually the english title is farthest from the original japanese title.

I think like you, that someone messed up the translation. It has to be Universe 宇宙 [uchuu]. They even say uchuu at the end (22:55). But apparently can that first kanji 宇 mean heaven/sora in some ways/meaning.
Maybe MAL is going to correct the translated title in the middle of the season, as they did with "Hai-Furi" to "High School Fleet", about 3-4 episodes into the season.

It's actually written as 宇宙 and pronounced Sora in the original Japanese title.

Personally I think it's a remarkable way to present the concept, something that is indeed lost in the English translation. The title is trying to say that Antarctica is a place more difficult to reach than "the edge of space" , not really "the Universe". However, if they just used 空 (sora) , it wouldn't convey the same sense of difficulty, as anyone can by a plane ticket and be in the sky.

So instead it's written as space but pronounced as sky, perfectly balancing the idea that going to Antarctica is more difficult to going to the edge of space (but not to space itself).
