DISCLAIMER: I’m not making this thread to start a waifu war...please read carefully!

So, another year is basically behind us...and soon enough everyone will be making their end of year threads claiming X Anime was the best and X waifu was the best.

But what should the metrics be?

Popularity? Influence? Some sort of Objectivity? A bit of everything?

I suppose it should be based on how cute they are, how dedicated and loving they are to their chosen character (i.e Rem's undying love for Subaru) and overall cool of a character they are in general.

My opinion may be biased, however, taking in these metrics into account I feel like the award goes to Rem for sure.

I don't think you can use objectivity to rate waifus when everything depends on personal taste to begin with. At the end of the day, even if it may be flawed, popularity is what always defines that someone ends being the "x" of the Year (in general lines, not to oneself, here what the "popularity method" is flawed). Polls are basically that at the end, popularity contests.

Pretty sure it would be just popularity. Like Crunchyroll awards, which was garbage, so does the waifu war:^)

Dude, Kira lost to the Erased villain. I don't even remember that guy since he was a shit-tier villain.

It would obviously be based on the popularity, like that's not even a question.

That is the only part of the awards who made me slightly salty. The worst thing was Kira has the win assured, since the other ones were pretty mediocre.

Actually Rem won the 2016 Waifu of the Year.

She’s not eligible this year...it has to be someone who had a new anime premier on 2017...

I wouldn't even vote for her, just was interested if a new character from a sequel counts xD
My vote would probably go to Satou-sensei.

Yup, just skipped through all the shows this year and she was the best newcomer imo.
Quetzalcoatl from Dragon Maid would also be a good choice :3

If you want to try and rate them objectively then good luck, we all know it'll come down to popularity.

I think there is no point in trying to rate something objectively in an award cause we all know the most popular one will always win. Just look at last year.

Do the metrics really matter? Whichever popularity poll determines the waifuist waifu of 2017 will still leave thousands of fan-boys rioting. We're talking about waifus mate, not something civilized like the 2016 American election cycle. War is inevitable.
A man has to defend his waifu regardless of the ignorant masses. For in the end there is but one constant:

We could.... not have an award. That's an option.

Putting anything on vote will make it a popularity contest, and anything other than that would just be your opinion or the opinion of a group of people.

I mean if you want an award, it'll end up something like Crunchyroll's anime of the year or it'll end up like some anime youtubers top 10 list. So what's the point?
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

The most liked/recognizable character this year = instant waifu of the year

Remember Rem last year? (Those who watched Rem:Zero) She was not recognizable in first 8 episodes until she showed her kindness to Subaru in those 15+ episodes. LUUL
Why do we have to live in such a cruel world?

For me, I guess it's personal preference.

My current one is Tohru from Kobayashi-san chi no MeiDoragon

I like the characters Megumin, Darkness from Konosuba

and Rem is a good one too.
Boy what I would give for a Season two of Dragon Maid

Rem won 2016 Waifu of the Year for a variety of reasons.

Not only was she VERY popular, she was arguably the shining light in the dark utter void that was that black hole called Re:Zero.

Rem is the embodiment of what a waifu should be.

Others should take note.

I can't decide who is the best girl of this year. I guess I have to go with Chtholly! She's so sweet! I liked her personality a lot.

Some honorable mentions:
Ange (Princess Principal)

----
Megumin (KonoSuba 2)

------
Kagura (Gintama. & Gintama.: Porori-hen)

-----
Kino (Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World - The Animated Series)

Not make a competition about it and just let everyone call their waifu the waifu of the year, because at the end of the day calling a character you're waifu is pretty sad anyway.

I really don't know who would win this year. In 2016 there were so many rem fanboys that it was obvious who was going to win but I don't feel like this time there is an easy pick.

Personally I would choose Ctholly but her anime wasn't really that popular so I'm sure she won't win.

Its gonna be by popularity. They should choose about how cute/beautiful she is. How important in the story she got a role and how she acts with the main character. Its gonna a be tough decision.
