Oh shit, Luffy is about to take on Katakuri. I'm assuming Katakuri is stronger than Cracker, so it should be interesting to see how Luffy fares against him considering how hard it was for him to beat Cracker.

Also it was cool to see Roger in that flashback with Pedro.

HOLY SHIT! Oda tends to consistently remind me why One Piece is the best! This has to go down as one of Luffys most epic moment.

Pedro really looked up to Roger, hey! Nice little background. Mentioning Jinbei with his whole crew feelt so nice.

But man Luffy, fuckin hell! This should be awesome to see. But I'm wondering how this arc is gonna conclude, finish the Revierie arc and start Wano Arc withing this year?

We have about 14 chapters left for the year, with Oda taking breaks after each 4 chapters. Gonna be tight

Man, Luffy's character has been excellent since Zou. This arc has made me remember what made him so endearing in the first place and chapters like this do great job of showing the Bon Clay/Ace sacrifices stuck with him a lot harder than people give Oda credit for.

But on the other hand, the high chance that 90% of this is going to be offscreened has me pretty conflicted. MC facing off against a foil with similar abilities is one of my favorite tropes in fiction but if it'll break the flow of the story I'd get even more upset.

Great chapter & nice colour page. Poor Carrot.

Perospero survived.

Thousand Sunny & the others managed to escape.
Luffy staying behind.
Luffy vs Kakakuri. Excited for this.

Amazing and intense chapter with Luffy dragging Katakuri into the mirror world and keep him in check so the crew can escape. Pedro seems to be dead but I'm not sure yet since this is One Piece we are talking about. Hyped to see Luffy vs Katakuri.

Art was a bit confusing at times but a good chapter nonetheless. Peros lost an arm in the explosion. Color me surprised, I didn't think explosions had genuine effects on people in this manga. Pedro is still not dead though. And why did Katakuri not see the explosion coming?

Also, now that Luffy is inside the mirror world with Katakuri, how will he win? Please no Gear Fifth. Gear Fourth is still new.

If Peros lost an arm in the explosion, where do you see that Pedro survived? I mean, chance is always there if we don't see the corpse. But maybe the explosion really did blow him up if even Peros lost an arm while using candy armor.

As shown in earlier chapters about him, when it's something that he isn't able to stop, then he just lets things happen. With him being surprised he probably couldn't believe it even when he saw it with his eyes. Possibly shock.

Since Katakuri is mochi, can't Luffy melt him with Red Hawk? And then maybe scatter his pieces across the island with the mirrors?
Well, we'll see... we don't know the full extent of Mochi Mochi no Mi's abilities and disadvantages yet.

Pedro is dead mate. If he doesn't die then the whole mini flashback and Carrot's grief would be narratively useless. And no, "this is One Piece" is not an argument.

Holy shit what a chapter! Love it when Luffy acts like the captain. Nothing better than a Roger flashback too.
I bet once Luffy defeats Katakuri he'll end up on the Germa ship.
Ngl thought Luffy was about to shout "Gear 5th" at the end there. It definitely looked like it before I scrolled down. Glad he didn't. Wouldn't mind a new gear 4th form, though.

As you said, there is no body, plus his whole flashback was dedicated to it not being his time yet. But even more evidence to the point, Luffy said this.

Pedro is not dead.

Perhaps, but he was shocked at it happening, not that it would happen.

There weren't even any hints to him trying to brace for the explosion that would free the ship or try to stop it. He should have seen it happen and tried to stop Pedro beforehand. He saw that Luffy would KO the lackies with Haoshoku and sent them into the mirror world so why didn't he immediately see the explosion happening and try to stop Pedro immediately? It's not a big deal but it does raise a question here.

Pedro most likely is alive. This is Oda we're talking about. There hasn't been any major deaths from Luffy's allies besides Ace and Whitebeard yet. So why should Pedro be dead now? Anyone expecting him to be dead will just be disappointed when he isn't.

Plus Oda dropped a huge foreshadowing this chapter:
Pedro asked Roger if he can accompany him and Oden and Roger told him "You've gotta stay on standby for now" and "Everyone sooner or later gets their own time to shine".

Some people might think this refers to Pedro blowing himself up, but I think this is actually foreshadowing Pedro and Carrot accompanying Momo as his guardians to travel with the Straw Hats after Wano similar to how Nekomamushi and Inuarashi accompanied Oden to travel with Roger. By travelling, I don't mean that they become Straw Hats themselves, they just accompany the Straw Hats to Raftel. This would create another parallel between the Roger Pirates and Straw Hats.

Roger basically told Pedro that he'll get his chance to travel in the future. I doubt this refers to Pedro blowing himself up, as this would be way too obvious. It looks more like Oda wants us to think it's referring to Pedro blowing himself up, but actually uses it to foreshadow that Pedro will accompany the Straw Hats (not as an actual Straw Hat though). I doubt this only refers to Pedro and Carrot travelling with the Straw Hats to WCI as this isn't the same as if Pedro had accompanied Oden. So I think it will be Pedro and Carrot accompanying Momo instead of Oden. As for why Carrot as well: Oden was accompanied by two minks as his guardians, so if Pedro will accompany the Straw Hats as Momo's guardian, Carrot will most likely be the second guardian. I've had this theory for a while now and what Roger said this chapter just strengthens it even further.

I took Luffy's comment on that as a "He did it for us, we shouldn't let this opportunity go to waste"-thing. As in, they could never face him again if they didn't use their chance after he sacrificed himself. Maybe it's the translation's fault.

Now that I see the image again, he may be shocked at Peros losing an arm as he couldn't tell before. I just read the previous chapter again and Luffy occupied him by attacking him. Pretty sure he does need to concentrate at least a bit to use his Haki and since Luffy held him off, he may have not seen what Pedro tried immediately.

There's no escaping Katakuri, which means Luffy will actually have to beat him to rejoin the crew. It makes you wonder how will he do it???...

Has he finally mastered Gear 4?
Will he use new Gear 4 tech?... maybe a new form, i.e. not Boundman or Tankman
Or did he have Gear 5! up his sleeve this entire time, but was too afraid to use it around others :?

Either way, Luffy's bounty should be going up to at least 1 BILLION beri after this arc.

I'm not saying that he is dead for 100%. It's just that Peros losing an arm, despite being a wider distance compared to Pedro and using armor as well, while Pedro's items were strapped to his chest. And while Oda's allies don't necessarily die (the last characters to really die were Vergo and Monet), it can change, especially now as they go up against the emperors. I'll just wait and see.

That would have been my takeaway from the line as well but only had he been confirmed dead, and not only is it left vague, but there's also his flashback theme of his time to shine not coming yet. It's not Oda's style to kill someone off, to begin with but using suicide as their highlighting moment is even more absurd for him. This whole chapter to me was basically Oda telling the readers Pedro will come back.

Maybe, maybe not. Its the issue you always encounter with characters that can predict the future. You'll always ask why they didn't see this or do that.

I just found this by googling:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y%C5%ABrei

This would make sense with what Luffy just said about facing him again. This is mythology in japanese folklore. If somebody does suicide by killing himself, his spirit is bound to live in the physical world and is prevented to go into the afterlife.

Pell was originally supposed to die, but Oda let him live because the twin tower attacks happened just as he wrote the chapters about him sacrificing himself with the bomb, flying from the tower. He also dedicated a special coverpage towards it, being the only mangaka in Japan to directly reference the attacks.

Bon Clay survived because Magellan is not a terrible person or killer and would rather imprison people than killing them, as he believes in punishment.

Vergo and Monet are dead, so "everyone magically came back" is not true.

Overall, there is an old comment on death by Oda that he did when One Piece was young, back in 1999. He said: "My series is supposed to be cheering, for people to read on rainy days".

Though he did switch things up after Marine Ford.

That was awesome, amazing chapter.

Pero survived with his blown away and Pedro's death is still left vague. :(

I loved Pedro's flashback to his conversation with Roger about getting his time to shine and I also really like @TheEnhancedExe theory regarding what Oda might be referring to with the whole 'chance' to shine theme.

The part with Carrot going after Katakuri with tears and remembering what Pedro said to her is incredibly sad. :(

Loved it when Luffy took charge saying that Sunny will sail since he's the captain and he said so. Luffy ftw! Also

I have far more rated with a perfect 10, this includes One Piece from Shabody till timeskip.

If you want to blame someone, blame Oda for turning everything post timneskip except Zou from passsable to dogshit. And yes if the "One Piece" turns out to be the planet itself and the destruction of the Red Line is the reason that Luffy will destrory Fishman Island as many predicted I´ll elevate that score back to a 10.

Untill then though I rate One Piece based on what it has delivered up untill now.

You think Oda is a bad writer who will always repeat his mistakes, thanks but I'm giving Oda the benefit of the doubt until shown otherwise. None of those characters had a mini flashback tying them to Roger immediately before their sacrifice with a "they are the ones who will succeed us" theme.

I think this particular scenario is different from others Oda has done, even Perospero with a shield lost an arm, Pedro who is weaker than Pero took the blast directly and if he isn't dead he should at at the very least be missing a quarter of his body and about to die from blood loss.

I think Oda is a great, highly entertaning author with very particular flaws that have become painfully unpleasant over the past years, throuh my 16 year experience with his writing style.

All of those scenarios were particlary different and yet all of them shared the same lazy outcome. Pell who was weak enough to be restrained by the force of around a dozen of Nico Robins hands and take damage by being stabbed with a knife managed to tank a nuke. During that "sacrifice" he had a tearful goodybe speech, hugged Vivi and monologued explaining his very purpose in life was to die for the sake of protecting his people.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Fool me 8 times in a row. Well apparently I´m an gullible idiot.

So Pedro is dead for real? If he is dead, that is a good setup for Carrot joining the crew, now she has tasted tragedy, welcome to the club.

So I guess Dogtooth going to be the final boss in this arc, Luffy is not ready for BIg Mom yet, so I guess Dogtooth will do. Part of me hopes Perdo is dead, but I have a feeling he will comeback. Still solid chapter.

You defended the single most hated example of Oda´s bad writing, by coming up with an excuse I´ve never heard about, without citing any sources that this was a reason for the change. Then you continued to excuse the second example with a blatant lie you pulled out of your ass, which I could disprove by linking you to the chapter that introduces Magellan´s character to the audience.

Now you sit here trying to play that off as a accidental mistake while your actions indicate damage control for Oda´s terrible writing decisions on the basis of personal feelings. Feeling offended by the generalization as one of many who have the same behavioural patterns when it comes to Oda´s writing.

It´s the internet, you made irrational arguments and complain about being called a dunce when people call you out on their quality.

Oh wow something interesting happens in One Piece, I'm rooting for Katakuri, Luffy already barely beat Cracker with Nami help, he's not gonna defeat the strongest sweet commander too is he? maybe a contrived finish.
I hope Oda doesn't cut back to Sanji and Pudding baking cakes next but more importantly I hope he doesn't skip to the end of the fight, that would be infuriating.

it was more epic than i tough!

Crazy chapter, but that ending was hype! Luffy and Katakuri are going to face off inside the Mirror World! Never expected that place to become their battlefield, but doesn't matter. This is going to be awesome!

Pedro is dead mate. If he doesn't die then the whole mini flashback and Carrot's grief would be narratively useless. And no, "this is One Piece" is not an argument.

Well how about terrible writing then?

Remember when Connis griefed her father for him to magically come back?
Remember when Luffy griefed Sabo for him to magically come back?
Remember when Bon Clay was griefed to magically come back?
Remember when Vivi griefed the Nuketanker and he magically came back?
Remember how tragically Punk Hazard was supposed to be and literally everyone magically came back?
Remember when the Strawhats were shocked that Igaram got blown up by Robin?

Yeah though so!

Ot: Good chapter 5/5

When bon clay died ? We never saw him ded lmao

Punk hazard ? Caesar gave them the cure to the gas thingy .so they survived like that .

All other were bs tho

Pain revived everyone in the konoha magically with an asspull . What about that huh?

As far as I'm concerned, Sanji isn't back on the ship either.
