I don't see the problem with loving Japanese culture as I respect it highly, but some people definitely take things far. But you will always have radical people who go nuts about anything and everything. It is what it is man. Seriously how many people have you seen in reality that worship the japanese culture? The most people i see that consider as weaboo can't even speak a word japanese how the hell should they then worship a country they even don't know the language? The most tell someone weaboo because they're animefan not because they are interrested in japan... You interpret worship like it would mean that they actually know anything about Japan. It's just the ideology that they are infatuated with Japan and anime-culture, they go overboard in relation to it. QwQ |

Create a detestable group within the anime community which almost EVERYONE can agree they don't like.... Then use them as a scapegoat for bashing any anime you disagree with. "Oh you like Naruto.....what are you a weeb?" Meanwhile, they continue to say how superior their tastes are and HMM....isn't it perfectly coincidental that weebs never even talk about any of the anime elitists like to play up! It's almost as if they're working together.....or better yet....THEY'RE ONE AND THE SAME! |

| People using random Japanese words in their sentences is at about the same level as pseudo-intellectuals using latin words when there's a perfectly viable English equivalent for that word or term(you can replace English with any other language of course) they're using. It makes me shake my head a bit and whatnot, but it's generally not something to worry about, it's just a bunch of people babbling pretty much. |

| I think it's fine to be a fan of anime and Japanese culture, however with weeaboos they need to also keep in touch with their own culture. Let's say you're into history and you study the Japanese language and culture and you also keep in touch with your own, then that is acceptable. But if you wear kimonos every day and think that's how Japanese people act and dress, then that's disrespecting their culture. Now keep in mind this is just my personal thought on this, and not everyone's opinion will be the same. Also if you want to watch a funny video on the subject of weeaboos, I suggest that you go to FilthyFranks channel on youtube and look for his video on it. |

| They're mythical creatures who only exist in the fantasies of Americanophiles who think that the mere act of not wanting to watch evert single one of their shitty anime dubs make you a weeaboo, and that even if it's just one particular dub or – God forbid – you're a person who just happens to prefer the original voices. They're not a problem. Self proclaimed weeaboo hunters and dub fags who see weeaboos in each and every corner are much worse. |

| The most weaboos can do is just be plain annoying. It's a free world (unless you're in North Korea), so if that's how they wanna express themselves, who are we to stop them? They have that right. They don't necessarily give normal anime fans a "bad name" per se but they sure as hell make non-anime watchers think the worst of us. However, I think with anime becoming more accepted by the mainstream, we shouldn't even be bothered by that. |

| Weeaboos - think they know everything about the japanese culture only because they watch anime. People criticizing weeaboos - think they know more than the average weeaboo (again having knowledge based on the anime they watch) so they make fun of them. conclusion: giving thoughts on weeaboos makes you a weeb as well since you are just as delusional as they are. Well... unless you are a japanese person or someone who has an actual knowledge about the matter I guess... Personally I couldn't care less about weebs or being called a weeb as long as I know I'm not one of these disgusting otaku |

| After reading this thread, I've decided I'm mostly on the side of "weeaboos", such as they are. The dropping random bits of Japanese into English conversation and the ignorance of proper usage and especially pronunciation of Japanese are annoying, but other than that I can't agree with the criticisms in this thread. -There's nothing wrong with loving and trying to embrace Japanese culture -There's no reason you need to "stay connected to your own culture". If American shows don't interest you, don't watch them. If socializing with "normal" people doesn't interest you, don't do it. -It's ok to want to go to Japan and learn Japanese. -It's ok to think one culture is better than another, even if it's not your own. -I even think it's ok to cosplay or wear anime paraphernalia in public. Who cares what "normal" people think? As an individualist who thinks culture should be consensual, I must be on the side of the weeaboo. |

| Watching anime is already considered weird in most people.... can't blame it all on the weebs though, some anime have ridiculously unreal lewd stories/settings that make them go nuts. If only they wouldn't spout japanese words all of a sudden, I' wouldn't cringe enough to unsocialize with them. |

| I think they are scary (especially the fat neckbearded type) and they seem disrespectful to japanese people and culture in some ways. Imagine a japanese person going around wearing cowboy clothes, living on a farm and eating only McDonalds and collecting weapons while saying he loves american culture or something like that. (though it would be funny the first time) It is nice to like something but being obsessive about something is bad. I don't mind cosplayers or anything like that though (heck, I go to medieval/fantasy festivals dressed in medieval clothing) but there is still real life to consider etc. Do what you love but don't make it an obsession. |

| I am a "weaboo" in that I am very interested in Japan and Japanese culture (especially the Japanese language), love anime (not nearly as much of an obsession as it was when I was in high school, but still an important part of my life), and am trying to learn Japanese. I recently started studying again after several years of not studying. I've studied about 800 kanji so far, although I need to go back and review the earlier ones that I've forgotten. I didn't act like too much of a weab for the most part when I was in high school, mostly because I wasn't a very social person, to say the least, and didn't talk about much of anything, including anime. I was also more obsessed with specific shows (especially Naruto) at that time than with anime or Japan in general. |

JustALEX said: My honest to god thoughts? I think "weeaboo" is more of a phase than anything else. I believe MANY MALers have been at one point or another even for a little bit through this phase. It is in fact usually triggered through an admiration of anime that eventually starts to seep into other things. First you watch anime and you like it....then you want to learn Japanese because it's so "cool" and sounds so much different than English! Then you want to eat Japanese food and all that Jap candy...then you start thinking that other Japanese cultural things are cool cuz you saw it in a goddamn cartoon! Eventually you actually want to go to Japan, because that's your holy land! This is all a phase though....MOST people naturally grow out of it...or move on to other things or whatever. Personally, I think Japan's culture is pretty neat, but I wouldn't trade my American culture for it. I love our sports, our movies, our TV shows, and you know what? Nothing gets my freedom boner harder than that goddamn flag! God bless America man! I have really mixed feelings about this post. On the one hand, I do love freedom and hate collectivism, which is a serious problem in Japan. On the other hand, I don't think there's anything wrong with becoming obsessed with Japan and wanting to move there, or at least visit. I hope to live there for some time myself, but I'll almost certainly return to the US once I've had my fill of Japan and hopefully learned the language well enough that I don't need subtitles for anime and can read manga and other books easily (which has become sort of a burning obsession lately; I'm far more obsessed with the language than I have been with anime in many years... and yet anime is still the main thing I want to use the language for). I also don't care too much about American culture, other than a few really great TV shows like the Sopranos and Breaking Bad (which I think are better than the vast majority of anime, but not the very best). |
