| It's because anime is a niche medium that not everyone will like. There's also people that dislike stuff when other's like it(especially in the community). Anime also tends to have a negative stigma due to people's parents/elders raising them up to be adults directing them think of cartoons/anime as "childish" and should not be enjoyed as/when they grow up. |

| I believe it's because of the overall bad reputation that anime has. Many people just refuse to watch any anime because they don't want to have anything in common with this community or don't want other people to think that they are weirdos. I have a friend who really likes sci-fi shows especially with dystopian settings. So I briefly described Psycho-Pass plot to her and she was really interested and willing to watch it.. until I told her that it's actually an anime. She wasn't interested anymore. |

| Because anime is different, it is unique, it is new. People hate things which are different, unique and new. It always happens. Look what happened to the Native Americans who were the original 'Americans'. They got wiped out for being different than the rest of the people. On a serious note, maybe it's best that a lot of people don't watch anime. Let's keep it niche and non-mainstream. |

I think having to read subtitles and listen to a foreign language is a big turnoff for many. The dubbed alternative is also somewhat off-putting because the voice actors aren't always the best, the translations might be bad, and the mouth animations tend to suffer. I think another issue is that a small minority of anime watchers are a little too invested in anime. I'm talking about those darned weebs who devote their lives to anime, living the anime culture, and tend to come off as childish and cringey. I know people who don't watch anime because they don't want to be associated with those types of people and they think that all people who watch anime must have similar personalities. Obviously that's not true, but when your only exposure to anime is through 30 year olds cosplaying anime, it's not hard to see where the stigma against anime comes from. |

| Before, I used to reject anything related to anime. It just seemed immature & childish to me. I didn't hate it. I knew stuff like Sailor Moon, Pokemon, & DBZ was from Japan but that didn't kept me from rejecting anything else that was drawn in cartoons and was either in Japanese or subtitled. I had a poor image of it, like it was junk, and I didn't want to associate with it. If you had asked me then "Why don't you watch anime?" I would have said because it's weird, childish, and immature, and I don't want to relate to it. My friends who were big into fandoms/communities of different sorts (mostly gaming) were not particularly good at selling their hobbies/fandoms either, so they never inspired me to look closer either. So, there's that, may be it helps answer your question, but really the take away from here is that it's in good part ignorance and the poor social view it creates towards anime. |
