| Finished Gundam 0079, Zeta, Char's Counter Attack, and F91. Having barely more than brand name recognition of Gundam before I started 0079, I went into Zeta with balanced expectations... the infamous trope of idiot young lovers wrecking everything became a farce, but despite that frustration I mostly had a blast. The second OP's chorus is MAGIC, an instant all time favorite. (The reused animation of Kamille giving a thumbs-up in the middle of Four's flight is super awkward, though!) I wish there were a short fan-edited movie cut of ZZ (is there?), because I missed at least one major character death by skipping it (and I don't feel like watching only the 5 minute death scene clip). I liked F91 although it was messy - it at least subverted certain outcomes I'd come to expect from the previous three stories. Surprised to find I can now legally watch Unicorn on CR as it airs in episodic form. Gonna be a good time. I finally picked up Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho (1992) at the incessant recommendation of a hardcore 90's Toonami fan I know at work, and as of episode 15 I like it, but apparently I have to go a lot farther than I'd planned to get to the good stuff. And the Origin, which gives a lot more background on Char and Sayla is awesome too, the last episode should come out by the end of the year. The only reason I'd watch ZZ is for all the scenes with Haman Karn, but even the way they wrap her story up is kinda unsatisfactory. YYH's best part is arguably The Dark Tournament arc and it ramps up pretty well to that point. The problem is it becomes a bit boring and uninspired afterwards. Some say it's because YYH's creator was pressured to make it more like Dragon Ball, which ran at the same time and was insanely popular. They wanted more fighting, tournaments, etc., but he got really fed up with it. |

| I remember first hearing of Battle Angel Alita when it was announced as a James Cameron movie project over a decade ago, and with a title like that I've been interested ever since. I should get to that... and Akira. I own Nausicaa in physical form, but I haven't got far yet. (Apparently Cameron finally gave up on directing Battle Angel since he's devoted his life to Avatar sequels, and Robert Rodriguez is directing it with a planned 2018 release date.) Forgot to mention I also finished SDF Macross. I thought it was great for the first few episodes, but it became overall a negative experience. I'm not a fan of love triangles in general, but this one imploded when I eventually hated both Minmay and Ichijou. The show's general tone is more light and fun than Gundam, so when consequences are even more dire than in Gundam, it feels not so much sad as bizarre and out of place. The Macross may have the worst starship captain I've ever seen in a hero role. (Well, admittedly I never watched Star Trek: Voyager....) And critically, I wasn't impressed by the songs - very weak compared to even the small number of pre-90's anime songs I know so far. Then there's that final arc, intriguing in concept but awful in execution, which I ranted about in the Episode 30 thread. Frustration of various kinds is common in anime, but in this show it was extreme. The show had a lot of cool ideas, and I could see it being enjoyable to anyone who isn't bothered by these things. It's just not for me, with one exception. The courtship and parenthood of Max and Milia is AMAZING. One of the best side stories I've ever seen in anything. I loved every moment of it. I saw that Macross Delta was currently airing, figured it would be fun garbage, discovered a show I'm legitimately greatly enjoying. As for the rest... I would be inclined to skip 7, but the very plausible idea that I might like 7 more than SDF is hilarious, so I have to at least give it a shot. But not soon. But the ones that are side stories set withing UC are really rewarding. In fact I watched the 0080 (War in the pocket) as my first Gundam and it's what pulled me into the franchise. Macross in general can be a bit hit or miss. The direction in SDF was all over the place in the second half, I mostly liked it, but don't feel a need to rewatch it. I'd rather see "Do you remember love?" again which is kind of a retelling, but it has a high budget production and makes its own cuts - the love triangle plays kinda the opposite way at the end and there's one of the most memorable moments with Minmay singing while a huge space battle rages on. One of my favorites is Macross Zero, mostly for its environmental drama aspects, but most people don't like it. Macross Plus is pretty popular - I mostly enjoyed it, it's unique and had lots of action, but I didn't care much for the characters really. Frontier was passable at best, I only liked the references to the older series. 7 and Delta are the worst tortures I can imagine for me (waterboarding doesn't even compare) :P . |

It's true that Yukito Kishiro has shifted his art style from predominantly black and smudgy (a shame, since he was really good at heavy tinting) to almost completely white and clean, but he kept most of the original ingredients: - panels with huge, large-scale constructions - fierce action with characters getting smashed to pieces and getting visually deconstructed - Alita drawn in various forms and cool poses - the story gets a bit lost into side chapters once in a while (like in the original), but then comes back with incredible clarity and it keeps the equal ratio of gritty action mixed with heavy philosophical segments - Alita still questions what it means to have real intelligence and real body against artificial ones, that theme keeps coming forward in various ways I like how Kishiro expanded the setting and made a whole little universe of his own. The new Mars Chronicles saga is just shaping up, but I think it's going to be pretty interesting. I think a proper long-running anime of Alita would be amazing, it's definitely one of the great manga epics. |

| I have already watched 13 episodes of Fantaman aka Golden Bat from 1967 and I wouldn't recommend it. Firstly, anime definitely targets children up to 12 years old. Plot, characters and their actions are way too naive and stupid for older people. Every episode looks basically the same, only minor villans change. I must really praise it though for the amazing set of characteristic towards Golden Bat and his main rival, dottor Zero. They both look beautifully. I will end it because I watch it with italian dub and I treat it as a lesson in the language I am currently learning but apart from that it's quite monotonus anime. |

| So I finally decided to get a Premium Membership at Daisuki.net and started watching Mama is a Fourth Grader. So far, it seems cute and funny. Mirai is adorable and Natsumi seems pretty good so far. I can't wait to see the rest of the series. But good God, Izumi is terrible! Not only is she a freeloader of the worst kind, she's a total hypocrite and I suspect she doesn't care about Natsumi, her ten-year-old niece, at all! I swear, I want to beat this woman with a tennis racket! To anyone who's seen the series: PLEASE tell me she gets better later on! I have only seen the first episode, though. I plan on watching more when I get the chance. |
| I'm in the "process" of watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam. I put airquotes there because of how little time I have to actually watch anime atm. And I'm still steadily watching old Lupin III. I'm really loving both, and I'd love to start delving into the works of Osamu Dezaki and Miyazaki's pre-Ghibli stuff. (of course before/after Lupin too) I also have an interest in checking out the Go Nagai adaptations, though I highly doubt I'd ever try to make it more than a few episodes with each lol, seeing as they're hundreds of episodes and made to sell toys. Minus Devilman that is. And of course I plan to keep watching Gundam, and I'd love to check out the Yamato series. Yeah, 70's anime especially was pretty badass. |

| I've been watching Harlock SSX (Arcadia of My Youth sequel). I'm somewhat impressed with this series, generally feels a lot higher quality watch than the original, but the feel is pretty different. The underlying commentary about slouchy humanity isn't quite as prevalent as the episodic space odyssey I think. Which I guess is good so I'm not just watching the same show again. random thought: I almost wish sometimes that Harlock got the Yamato 2199 treatment instead of that meh cgi movie |
| I've generally moved older shows to the bottom of the list, because most of them are long and there are still a lot of newer shows I want to see first. Here's what I've seen since I last posted. (I've noticed that this thread gets used to post completed shows as well as those in progress, making the "Last Completed" thread a bit redundant....) Shinzou Ningen Casshern / Casshan: Robot Hunter (1973) https://myanimelist.net/anime/4810/Shinzou_Ningen_Casshern Watched on HiDive - https://www.hidive.com/tv/casshan I haven't seen Casshern Sins yet, and I wanted to check out the original first. I was going to only watch the beginning and end, but instead I watched it all, mostly at 4x speed. Normally I'd never watch at anything but 1x, but several factors combined here. Mainly, this show does not have a legendary reputation outside Japan, and I'd rather skip it entirely than watch it at 1x speed. Also, my interests were to read the show's text and see the art. I didn't need to have a valid experience of its direction, performances, animation, etc. I got what I wanted out of it. Casshan was directed and co-written by Hiroshi Sasagawa, director of the earlier Gatchaman. I agree with a reviewer who wrote that Casshan is the better of the two, which is ironic since I initially was highly impressed by Gatchaman - one of its early episodes had dealt openly with the sudden death of a child's father, something I expect would not have been allowed at the time in cartoons for sheltered American kids. (A few years later, Bridge to Terabithia was written with the goal of combatting that unpreparedness. Or so I read; I wasn't born until 1987.) But Gatchaman's enjoyability was inconsistent after a few more episodes, and I have it on hold at 12. Casshan has the same rating according to MAL, but it features large doses of death and suffering on a regular basis. Newly introduced characters are seldom alive by the time credits roll. In one episode, children play with a suicide bomber robot made to look like a clown toy, only to be killed when the robot explodes. This is followed by a montage of the same thing recurring in innumerable other towns. All this doesn't make it "better" than Gatchaman, but it may be more enjoyable for adult viewers. Then again, Gatchaman has a slightly higher MAL score. I watched the first two and last two episodes at 1x speed. The standouts were probably #9, which has an orchestra playing while robots march on their city (I read that something similar happened in Casshern Sins), and #14, which has a mayor reject Casshan and surrender to the robots, resulting in intolerable suffering for both himself and his people. (It might have been hard to watch at 1x.) I also liked the various (generally tragic) episodes about human heroes and good robots, and the ones with a theme of overcoming prejudice against robots. Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: In the Name of Love (1978) https://myanimelist.net/anime/3067/Saraba_Uchuu_Senkan_Yamato__Ai_no_Senshi-tachi ^ This movie was retconned by / remade into Space Battleship Yamato 2 (1978) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1651/Uchuu_Senkan_Yamato_2 I watched the movie in August 2016, the sequel series from June to August 2017. I was impressed by the Comet Empire in the movie, but somehow less so in the TV series. I don't even remember the idiot jock character Saitou from the film, which must mean he was alright in it, but in the TV series he was repetitively annoying and (surprisingly) did no more than the bare minimum to redeem himself. Overall I found the show much less enjoyable than the original, though it's said to be considered the best season by fans. The modern remake may be my most anticipated anime, but I'll finish season 3 and the other movies first. I watched the 2010 live action film and really liked it, until the ending. The first firing of the WMG was crazy hype. I'm leaving GE999 indefinitely on hold for now; I considered skipping to the "best" episodes, but I'd rather try to watch it all when I have less unseen. Don't know when I'll finally start Harlock, but it should be after I catch up on Yamato and before I pick up GE999 again. Perhaps I'll watch GE999 a few episodes at a time over a few years, I'm in no hurry. I've been watching Patlabor, Nadia, Galaxy Express 999, Gunbuster, Bubblegum Crisis, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, etc., Fun times. |

Forgot to mention I also watched War in the Pocket. It was obviously good, but far from what I went in expecting based on the descriptions I'd read. I thought it would be something like Spielberg's War of the Worlds, or even Grave of the Fireflies - no pilot characters, just a group of powerless orphans trying to survive in a mostly abandoned colony. But what it actually was was depressing enough. |

| I recently started watching anime again after a break, Ive just started a rewatch of Takarajima, and I'm loving it all over again. Really recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. |
| So nice to know that other people enjoy older anime like I do. I finished all the Captain Herlock series and films and currently watching all the Record of Lodoss War OAVs and tv series. I remember buying the VHS of the first few episodes in the mid-90s for 30$...Fantastic fantasy anime. The soundtrack is so great. |
