EDIT: The title can be rephrased as: What makes you like a character? After watching a decent number of anime series I encountered different characters that range from despicable to lovable, but it's really hard to limit those lovable characters in a specific number. In some cases you might end up frustrated between which of two characters to pick, and in some cases you pick several characters of the same series. As an anime fan I faced these problems several times but it's no longer a problem. But how about you? How do you pick your favourite characters? Do you base it on your memory by listing all the good characters then keep on narrowing the list? Or can you spot a favourite character in the process of watching the series? With that said, what are the special features that your favourite characters should have? Are you focused on one kind of character? Or does it vary depending on the gender, age, anime it belongs to? |

When I first started on here it was all on memory : ). Afterwards, I slowly edited it up where there was an even amount of male characters and female characters from different series. Its also fun to add maybe one side character that was very memorable too but is not really on anybody's list. An example on mine is "Akabayashi Mizuki" from the second season of Durarara. Really cool character but he kind of fades in the back compared to the main cast. |

If I love practically everything about them (design, personality, role in the series, voice acting...) and they cause a very big impression on me, then they become my favorites. |

I pick my favorite characters based on how much I connected with them throughout the anime. If I loved every moment a certain character was on screen, then that character gets a spot on my favorites list. |

In terms of the MAL portion there were several criteria I used. First do I remember the character by name. Then I added were they from a series on my favorites list, if so did that character appeal to me or leave enough of an impact to justify a double reference to the anime in my favorites. If they did I limited myself to 1 character per series, that and I tried to split them fairly equally in terms of genders across the list. As for can I spot a favorite character while watching a series, probably but I can't say whether I would end up adding them or not or just keep them in mind. As for the last part there are any number of reasons a character can appeal to me, the ones who appeal to me the most would generally have the strongest qualities in my memory. |

For MAL list you mean? Well, in my case I really can't say that i love just 10 characters, there are much more. But even when you have favorite characters, just like how it is when you have kids, you love all, but you love some more than others. So I simply choose those I love the most out of the whole group, or when we talk about similar characters, I choose the one that is the best in that role. |

"How do you pick your favourite characters?" What a great topic for a discussion. Totally something we need to know, cuz'y'know, there are rules for choosing your favourites and most of the time people don't know what their favourites are, so they need a procedure to find them, right? Truly a controversial topic, fit for discussion No. Get this spam out of the discussions. There's nothing to be gained here except for an increased number of posts on your profile, HURRAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!! |

I pick based on how much I was able to understand them, bonus points if I don't relate to them on superficial levels, and how much they pick my interest. |
But does the heart have the right perspective? |

I love so many characters, and I was never able to pick only 10 to put on the list, and since I'm constantly watching new anime, the list of characters I love gets bigger, so I just made my own list of favorites on my profile description. |

I pick my favourite characters based on how much they stick with me after an ammount of time passes and if they ever got dull. It does not matter on how much screen time they had. |

Can be main characters like Kyon for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya who's presence makes or breaks the show, it could be a side character who I enjoyed every moment of Like Sucy in Little Witch Academia or it could be that I love a trait that the character given of, like how Misato Katsuragi is very mother like and a care taker to Shinji and later Asuka , but she is still a broken character, she puts on a happy face to make them feel more secure. |

I pick based on how much I like them, plain and simple. Though its tough to narrow it down, so I tend to shuffle them around every now and then. I also base it off my top 5 for each gender, so its balanced. |

If its a boy, it depends of their mindset, action and reaction and if they do or dont upset me, and he must have a tolerant level of protagonism. And that is why i dont like main characters. If its a girl, it dependa how cute she is, how she affects the history, and her shenanigans, like being a sweet loli on the outside but inside she wants to kill, rape and create despair. |

They're normally characters that I especially root for or relate to while watching the series. They're characters that give me chills when I see them get developed, characters that I want to see on screen, or characters that make me smile and jump up in my seat whenever they do something cool. |

Whoever I enjoy the most but some words that come up a fair amount when I try to describe them are playful and innocent. Some others get there because of how pivotal they were to a favourite. |

I just pick them based on personality. If they have admirable traits they get on the list. Then it's just survial of the fittest. 3/10 of my list are supporting characters. |

First off, I avoid choosing more than one character from the same series to add some diversity and to not show bias with one anime series too much. Second, I like choosing characters who are different from the generic standard. Basically, I choose favorite characters if they possess a unique trait that few other characters have. Third, characters who I can directly relate to become fast favorites for me. While there are many characters that I can relate too, only a select few (two in particular) are characters whom I can completely empathize with. Fourth, if you look at my profile, my "favorite characters" list is merely just an extra spot to add characters that I like. My "true favorite characters" are in my About Me section, and it is fixed at only having 18 characters (9 Males, 9 Females), no more no less. Having too many favorites makes it hard to decide what kinds of characters a person likes, so I keep my favorite characters at 18 where only my top top favorites are chosen. |

I pick them based off of how they evolve throughout the series. If they make a drastic change in character over time, those are usually the ones I enjoy the most. |

I sacrifice a virgin on an altar dedicated to Baphomet and ask him for guidance. And then when I realize Baphomet doesn't exist and I've just committed murder for no reason at all, I run and hide from the authorities until the storm passes. And then I pick 10 characters at random. These are all true facts that are 100% provable with science and ouija boards and neighborhood wives' gossip. |
This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi! I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom: "Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news. Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people. Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation. There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime. You should be watching Carole & Tuesday." |

For me it usually goes like this. I'm watching a series and think "I kinda like this guy he seems cool/funny/awesome etc." and then comes that one moment that just makes me go "hell yea this guy is the freaking best" and earns them the place among my all time favorite characters. For example Takamura from Hajime no Ippo. I liked him from start 'cus of how he could go from cool to goofball in matter of seconds. Hilarious most of time and still a total badass. AND THEN came the Bryan Hawk match. After that he instantly jumped from "characters I really like" to "top 10 favorites of all time" ALL HAIL THE GREAT TAKAMURA! |

Personality is the most important trait for me, if I don't like that, there's no way I will like the character. Good writing on the character will only take it so far in my favorite list, there are characters that I think are really well written but that I didn't like them that much because of their personalities (Ikari Shinji). I also like when they share similar ideals to mine, or go through similar problems to the ones I go through (being relatable). Design plays a smallish role. Their actions in the story may contribute a lot as well. |

My favorite characters list is kinda shit atm but I can't put my finger on what would make me like a character, there are just way too many factors. I usually base it of personality and how they grow as a character through out the series along with how they interact with other characters in the show. To be honest appearance rarely has any influence when it comes to me choosing a favorite character although that's probably the same for most people haha. |

A combination of factors, divided into physical, how much I like their design, personality, how much interest I have in their mannerisms (I have a leaning towards antagonistic characters), how exploitable I find them to be for my headcanon or useful in my fanon somehow… etc. Honestly, there are some other things I can't finger so well, but at the end of the day, I don't think it matters. |

How much thought and time that goes into him/her is for me. The more 3 dimensional or in depth the character is, the more I like them. They're not just playing a stereotype like just a tsundere or just the character that's always a pervert. If I feel as if I'm watching a real person go through their life, then that not only compliments the character, but also the show and creators themselves. |

I don't need to pick them, they are just so awesome that they pick themselves. |

The character's character. Good characters are more likely to be my favorite. But I can also like and appreciate villains. Another thing that's important to me is how much purity there is in the character's conception. You know there are no agendas but to make a story with this character. The character just is. All he does and thinks and feels, and the way he does them, and how he reacts, are all true to his character and not to impress the audience, or to follow a certain fetish, or to try to be novel or original, or to be for the mere sake of the manipulating and bending the story towards the writer's liking. The character's personality, heart, strengths and weaknesses. How he/she starts out. How he/she develops. How his/her character unfolds. His/her character as shown through the story. Character is greater than personality. Armin Arlert is my most beloved baby. TTwTT Even so much more so now~;w; XD |
