7 years low for Kyoto Animation, the 2nd lowest average after Munto (TV), and only the 2nd TV anime to not pass 3K mark in first release. Some argue KnK (6K), Amaburi (6.8K), and/or even Hibike! (8.3K) were far worse shows. TLS bumped up Tamako Market (4.8K), re-release redeemed original Nichijou numbers (7K). Nothing is going to save this one. Undeniably the worst KyoAni show ever in recent years which is reflected with these glaring disc numbers. Hopefully it will be a wonderful lesson down the road. |

Sansha Sanyou's going to fail, I knew it when they were offering an extra episode, it was a bad sign. It would've succeeded if released in 2004-2006. Flying Witch is going to fail as well, this season's mostly a big bust. Macross Delta is doing fine, I'm not too interested in buying the BDs but I'll buy at least the album and if a game is announced, I'll get that as well. |

Update for the GaruPan Movie at the Box Office, after its 29th weekend (199 days): http://girls-und-panzer.at.webry.info/201606/article_3.html It's starting to cool down after the film strip boost on May 21 and the addition of 4DX and ULTIRA screenings. Yesterday's attendees number was only 20% of last Monday, and many theaters are going to stop showing the movie within a week or two, so it's not going to be adding a whole lot anymore. It'll probably end around 2.25 billion yen, which would be really nice for the franchise. It started off good but soon the mediocre/bad script showed its ugly head. RE:Zero on the other hand does seem to get better and better, I wasn't enthused at the beginning but the last episdes have been legitimately intriguing. I think it has a decent chance of becoming a success perhaps even beating Kabaneri if the second "arc" is as good as people say. Stray dogs isn't selling as well as I thought it would and afaik the manga hasn't had too much of a boost either. Shame since Bones needed the cash flow but also well deserved as the show really isn't that good all tings considered. |

And good riddance, that studio house too much talent to waste it on somewhat charming Otaku-pandering nonsense. Now I enjoyed Amaburi but I would trade that and a thousand Phantoms for something like the upcoming Violet Evergarden. Hopefully this signals a new direction for Kyoani, I still haven't seen anything on the level of Hyouka from them. It's been 4 years and I know they're capable, Hibike had glimpses of real quality at times. |

This post was supposed to be just a 2D fist pump with me saying "Panzer Vor!" (tanks forward!) but that would just be a "Yay!" post according to the board sticky so I guess I'll make it an impromptu attempt at "why I think GuP is doing so well" post. There is a longish thread entitled What's with the appeal about this show? started by someone for which it didn't appeal to (and it's about the pre-quel TV series back in 2012 when it was airing) with an ensuing argument but since something should be attempted at explaining these amazing(?) sales figures I'll just jot a few thoughts of my own here. Before I do here's a couple of exerpts from that thread on why the appeal. This one by @Takuan_Soho "The appeal of the show is easy to understand: 1) Good sports plot, you want to root for the underdog. 2) Good humor, little things like the Stu III getting shot or Momo's inability to hit the broad side of a barn, and that they can even make fanservice humorous. 3) Their technical accuracy and attention to detail. Even the most snobbish tank otaku have been impressed by the show. 4) Interesting characters that have depth, are easy to identify, and you want to like, and a surprising turn for drama for some of them. 5) Yukari's enthusiasm. 6) Extremely good use of music, particularly suited to the nationality of the tanks. This has been a constant, from the BGM of the first episode, through the American marches against Saunders, and now the especially with the Russians. Even their incidental music sets the scenes and moods well. 7) Enough history otaku fanservice (the name of the food court in Oourai for instance). 8) Taking the dumbest sounding idea possible, and by treating it serious actually making suspension of disbelief possible. 9) Their national stereotypes are lighthearted ribbing, sort of like Hetalia. 10) No panties. 11) The worldview is developing nicely. The team has done an excellent job of providing details that support the assumptions underlying this world. It makes one look forward to the flow of information about the world (i.e. that schools were put on ships to help promote internationalization for one). 12) It's fun as hell to watch, love to be able to kick back and enjoy the ride. Is that enough for you? Back on message? Edit: forgot to add: 13) Effective use of foreshadowing. Unlike most animation, they actually set they reveal later in the show up in previous episodes, like the number of the tanks that showed that there were still three more aboard the ship, on in the first episode when Miho refused to join senshado, the vice president exclaimed "its the end of our school." Watching it at the time it was passed off as exaggeration, but it should have been a warning in that she is the most mellow of the three student council members. That she said it was a tip off from the start. There are lots of these little moments that are a real compliment to the animation team. Its a pity the SAO's team didn't bring the same zest to their project." By @Okanagan "Sounding much more like an army general than an anime director, Tsutomu Mizushima ( 水島努監督 ) made this thundering statement, 「パンチラ厳禁!戦車無理すんな!」 which I'll amateurishly attempt to translate as Panties are strictly forbidden ! . . Tanks must be accurately depicted ! I have watched the series very carefully up to this point, and apparently neither of these commands has been disobeyed." And in a later post Okanagan asserts: "I've said before that I think that GaruPan is a classic that will be talked about and written about for a long time. I wish career success and business success to all the people involved since I want to see them rewarded for creating something excellent." I agree with him. IMO GuP will be mentioned along with K-On and Aria as paradigms. And his hope for career success and business success looks to be coming true in a big way (though not being a follower of the commercial aspects of anime it nevertheless looks that way to me at first glance). IMO GuP really is a quantum leap in CGDCT-type shows. I think the key is it adds action while maintaining the innocence and cuteness of the girls. The marriage with WWII-period tanks (I mean how many males did't like tanks or build models of them when they were kids?) I always thought would be a home run as long as both sides of the equation were filled in properly: lots of cute girls without excess fanservice (ubiquitous short school skirts and the occasional, rather tame bath scenes notwithstanding) while heaping lavish attention on the detail and accuracy of the tanks and then having the girls actually doing something active by engaging in interesting battles with said tanks. And keeping it relatively realistic (I'll elaborate later on). So let's look at similar shows: as much as I like K-On, Non Non Biyori and Aria for their characters, cuteness and healing atmosphere (Iyashikei anime) they do lack the action element and can be borderline boring at times. On the other hand Strike Witches and other girls-with-guns action shows veer too far on the fanservice side (substituting moe with fanservice). And while KanColle steered clear of the fanservice both it and Strike Witches strayed too far from reality. GuP may take a few liberties here and there (some physics being bent ie. tank drifting, etc) and also with the safety aspect (girls with exposed heads and limbs while explosive shells are whizzing around (although the shells are supposed to be safer with a chip inside to determine penetrating hits with only a pyro charge for effects)) I think that part of it was largely jettisoned in favor of the explody effects side of things (I guess paintball shells splattering was judged to be not flashy enough and the producers decided that that trumped the safety aspect) in what is supposed to be a "safe-ish" sport) nevertheless it's still fairly close to just having normal girls operating normal, recognizable vehicles. It's not anthropomorphic (by not turning into guns (Upotte) or too science-fiction-y (mecha) or the magical aspect of Strike Witches (and all magical girl shows) or KanColle's seriously fictional "naval outfits" that defy suspension of disbelief. With GuP you could substitute girls with young men and almost call it 90% realistic (but of course why not marry it with moe to appeal to the kawaii segment). Perhaps we need to add a sub-category to CGDCT, call it CGDCAT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Action-y Things) as we already have Iyashikei for the sedentary (healing) ones, and girls with guns for the action-y fanservice-y ones, mahou shoujo for magical girl ones and shoujo-ai for mild gl ones, idol anime, etc. Fin :) |

Re:zero have improved to a stable level..could still go higher as the rate it is improving is the same as the story. Kabernari is also going strong ..i will admit that at times the writing is a bit off but it still a very entertaining show to watch and probably the best steampunk anime to come out of japan in years so props to wit. Highschool Fleet: Well this i am in love/hate relatshionship..the navy setting, combat, warfare and historical knowledge are great..but the cute,,moe and full young teen girl personal is off putting...but still doing ok. Netogem is the only i am a little dissapointed cause i find it enjoyable but i am not too suprised..the sales are on the okish sides so not bad per say but i doubt we will see more of it later..but im not oto bothered with it. as for the rest that i am watching: Mayogia, Big Order, Joker Game, Sakamato..... well don't really bother much. the first two are so bad..they there funny bad so no worries if they dont sell..joker game is an interesting series but it has its issues and for Sakamato it is entertaining but it is a full adaptation and most of it is stand alone stories so no probs either. Souji and Stray Dogs i dropped them...hero academia is on hold so i can marathon it. |

I looked at the estimates yesterday and it already was at 5.9k, so it seems to rise at a really fast speed. I think it can break the 7k mark until the end of june, especially with the prescreening event and the new cast announced. I'm also really confident that once we're a little bit into arc 3 the sales will go up even after the first volume has been released. rederoin said: *2.6k -> *3.9k -> *3.6k Boku no Hero Oh damn. That's way lower than I expected it to be. Guess the anime's main + was the manga boost. Glad to see that healing anime also gets some love! |

Ejc said: Update for the GaruPan Movie at the Box Office, after its 29th weekend (199 days): http://girls-und-panzer.at.webry.info/201606/article_3.html It's starting to cool down after the film strip boost on May 21 and the addition of 4DX and ULTIRA screenings. Yesterday's attendees number was only 20% of last Monday, and many theaters are going to stop showing the movie within a week or two, so it's not going to be adding a whole lot anymore. It'll probably end around 2.25 billion yen, which would be really nice for the franchise. 5 main aspects I base my ratings on: 1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it? 2. Is it better than Breaking Bad? 3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it? 4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL? 5. Is it actually good? Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant... |

Wow, Girls und Panzer took over the sales charts. Maybe I should actually get around to watching the first season now. shanimebib said: 7 years low for Kyoto Animation, the 2nd lowest average after Munto (TV), and only the 2nd TV anime to not pass 3K mark in first release. This is incredibly satisfying to see. Phantom World was unbelievably shitty and KyoAni should know by now what a mistake it was to animate it in the first place. They have a lot of talent that they quite frankly forgot how to use properly. Here's to hoping they'll redeem themselves with Violet Evergarden. Or Koe no Katachi. Glad to see Flying Witch above the 2k mark. Hopefully this means there'll be another season in the future. It's honestly my favorite show this season. |

I haven't seen any news article on it, so I have no idea how much it made at the Box Office. It also showed on 23 screens, so it was a limited opening. |
