Ofc. Sadly, it was meant to be just for one episode. Probably he won't appear ever again. Or it seems so, idk.

I think that was a step up for this series. I'm liking this rather episodic format where we see all the spies do a mission. Wonder how they'll tie it all together in the end.

Also, I'm seeing a lot of people getting riled up about the vengeful lover. I don't think this episode was supposed to endorse pedophilia... More along the lines of even the goodhearted people in the city are prone to the most depraved acts (as far as we know, he seems to be a good person; at least, besides the pedophilia, that's how he's presented). Which leads you to wonder what might happen to Honma...

Geez!!! Shanghai is a fucked up town in this episode. DAMMIT!
"Revenged for my lover" His lover is a guy. i'm just.....speechless....just realized how fucked up this town is.

The spy from D-Agency in this episode knew how to act. i like how he made his fake face like that. i thought he was a different person. great episode overall imo.
looking foward for the next episode because the next episode's title is

It's more the way this twist appeared out of nowhere which got me riled up. I mean, how one could have guessed it? For all we know, the private say could have been riddled with debts because he likes it opium too much, or hell because he's genuinely concerned about the Captain Oikawa.

Pedophilia was an awful reality. Imagine that Japan had invaded China during the time this anime is set, less than a century after China ousted the English colonial empire following the second opium war ending in 1860.
Understandably, on a macro social scale, China took great deal of pain to structure into its modern self. Kids forced into prostitution like anyone else isn't surprising for such an obscure pivotal era, ultimately leading to Mao Zedong's revolution. Many Historians would tell you that China is a sleeping giant. Its rise on the top of the world's economy is a very recent phenomenon.

----
To everyone else upset about it:
Don't be prompt to judge with emotion or else you will get mistaken. JG wanted to include a realistic plot element in accordance with the Chinese industry of pleasure cattering to the bored and fortunate foreigners. It wasn't supposed to be "edgy" by itself. Even though it was handled in a hammy way with the revelation and death of the neurotic captain.

It didn't quite come out of nowhere though, did it? We can see the private looking quite glum when the explosion is being investigated, though Honma doesn't know why. He must've seen the identifying tattoo on the victim -- he must've either been one of the ones to pull out the bodies, or was putting up a blockade against passersby and saw as another crew was getting them. Then, in Oikawa's office, we don't see him get riled up at first because he doesn't really have a need to be, until Oikawa reveals that not only did he plan the explosion, but he has absolutely no regrets regarding it. I think that much was the straw that broke the camel's back -- it wasn't so much the act itself, but the fact that he said "I would kill all of them over again!" (paraphrasing) that set the private off. Then, he commits suicide. This is due to the trifecta against him: one, his love is dead, two, he killed his commanding officer, and three, he now has another person -- Honma, who we (and presumably the private) can see is rather righteous and ideological -- know of his less-than ideal life. Not only that, but I think the episode was building up the boy's significance early on. He wasn't just a piece of the puzzle for Honma to identify, he was also there to subtly introduce his own importance in the story.

Additionally, I do like the opium idea, but I feel like the vengeful-but-twisted lover angle was just more visceral. We can't like him because of his sexuality (or more particularly for acting on that sexuality), but we also have no other reason to dislike him -- he seems like a fine character otherwise -- and we can like him because he killed Oikawa, the notable evil of the episode. The lover twist was just perfectly shocking for me, and I don't think it really came out of nowhere, though it was certainly unexpected.

You got my point wrong. My pet peeve is that we cannot get into the private's mind because no solid elements are expressly brought to our attention about him. We cannot draw conclusion before the climatic revelation which comes off as an underhanded effect of surprise. Indeed, the private's behavior makes perfect sense after the fact, I won't deny that. I just state that this episode failed as an investigation story for aforementioned reasons in my very first post. Which is why I rated the episode okay instead of great.
...The sixth and the eighth rules of the decalogue. This twist still comes from nowhere even if we can tell it will happen >> somehow <<
A good investigation story puts forth interactivity, associating spectator with researcher's very thoughts. Nothing should be hidden to the spectator for the sake of an unpredictable twist.

Apart from that, I wholeheartedly agree with you. You even looked deeper into the matter than I did. Great analyzis here.

Nota Bene: and yes, the private was a puzzle element technically. Why? Because we follow the intrigue progress with Honwa's perspective only.

The episode with least obvious impact up to now, but it does go to show how little of a push a spy needs to make to solve an intricate case.

I don't think that only 12 episodes of this will be acceptable, though.

We meet another character of the cast, the episode through the self-closing formula. The narrative itself is not bad and is quite raw and dramatic, but this setting chosen to show the characters, I do not like it because you can not hear well or fix in the mind the character in himself. Excellent drawings and animations, the same for the sets, very beautiful, they make us sharers in context. Too bad for the for simplicity with which he solved the case, too fast for my taste.

Overall, however, the episode is enjoyable.

Jesus on a cracker, that was Fukumoto? I couldn't even tell. Even the captain looked like a fucking D Agent from the way he was designed, hell even the ladyboy looked like he could've been a D Agent. I am liking Joker Game, it's one of my favorite series for Spring 2016 but apart from a few characters, the rest of the D Agents look almost exactly like with unnoticeable nuances that are extremely easy to overlook.

I wonder how old that boy was, the one who shot Miyamoto and was Yoshino's lover. A lot Asians look younger than they actually appear but still it did reek of pedophilia on so many levels. Both Oikawa and Yoshino are fucking disgusting if that ladyboy was a young, underaged kid. I'm also going to be sick and say that I loved that part where Yoshino shot Oikawa. Not because he was avenging his underaged lover but because I liked seeing Oikawa go crazy then get killed.

At least, someone who agrees!

And no. One cannot say it's the worst episode after the third one, which involved drunken physics/chemistry trick I have never heard about, extremely stupid plan to tally resistance, cheesy action scenes that would make Black Lagoon's blush, pretentious episode writing and cliché amnesia element. No, the third takes the cake. It's the jarring stain on the whole composition so far.

Four episodes in and people are still complaining that they can't recognize the spies.

1. They're spies. It's not supposed to be easy to recognize them.
2. If it matters that much to you then learn their voices.

This episode was 4/5 for me , although i liked the french occupation setting in the previous episode because i'm currently studying about the occupation and the vichy regime. When i realised this episode was set in Shanghai i felt quite uneasy i somehow found it uneasy since it was a bit of a touchy subject. Plus it was as if it was highlighting the inequality in that periode. We see in the international settlements only foreigners people partying young ones prostituting themselves. Also when the sicko captain was dying he was justifying him killing the housemaid and beggars i didn't get is, did he mean that they were spies or something. But still what sent chills down my spine when he said human life was the lowest commodity in Shanghai

Overall i really like this anime not onlu because it's historical but it's not those ones with the cute characters and irrational justice sense it's mature plus even the animation is realistic i like the spies hiding within the episode concept it makes you use your brain and sense of deduction
Sorry for my awful english
Also it's pretty hard to sympathize with the pedophile soldier even i f he loved the boy he seemed underage. But killing the captain was a move that i thank him for but the ending of this episode was bizzare and😕

No, you are right, but the boy Honma (the red nose guy) saw at the club wasn't the one that was killed by Oikawa. The boy, who was killed in Oikawa's house and burned in the explosion, had a flower tattoo on his right shoulder. You can see the boy with the tattoo in a red dress during Oikawa's confessesion about his corruption.

The boy in the green dress, who offered a drink to Honma, doesn't have a tattoo. So, it's not the same boy. All prostitutes, male and female, actually wear clothes with same flower print as the tattoo, i think, but only the killed one is shown to have a tattoo.

I didn't really like this episode that much.

Our detective, Fukamoto, is leading the investigator to the place where the bad boss was doing all the bad opium stuff, he even slipped him the coin needed to get into the back, but what did this show to the investigator? nothing! In the final accusation the investigator just thinks it's him because of the reaction bad boss had to the explosion and how it would be the best place time to have the explosion, he didn't show if he connected it to the bar place. Dun Dun Dun, it was bad boss he was going crazy, stealing opium, was the one who killed the guy in the begining and blew up his house so nobody would suspect a thing. Blam, it turns out that that the dude holding the gun needed revenge because the boy who died in the explosion and was with bad boss was his lover, that definently didn't come out of nowhere. Also it also turns out bad boss was leaking the information which is the reason he needed to die and the detective doesn't need to deal with this case anymore becaus of that, he probably knew the vengeful lover was going to kill him in the end.

I think i might just be too young to fully enjoy this show, since I was really confused watching the episode and had to watch it like two more times to understand the little that I figured out. I'm probably wrong about something so please correct my childish analysis if you spot something.

Edit- I think the thing that might have connected it was how he knew the kid was doing illegal stuff because of his tatoo, but that still doesn't make sense in why he would think it was bad boss.

Good change on the formula with this new perspective. The story went well with the location used. I only disliked how most of the story was actually told as a "debriefing". Also, I would have like it more if the guilty one wasn't ending as a seemingly crazy man.
The setting was pretty, the environment well presented.

I could not stop to stare the investigator soldier's nose all the episode long. What was this red end?

3.5/5

I know we can complain about the character-design(s?) but I suppose we could also think those spies have quite a common type of face.
I must be in the minority (after reading commentaries here) but I recognized the character because of his voice while I still was uncertain he was from the Agency because, well, he is good to disguise himself.

Interesting episode, I expected there to be a bit of a struggle/fight at the end but the other soldier ended it fast. I found it interesting that although they gave a specific year for the last episode this one didn't seem to mention it (unless I missed it). I guess it just took place "sometime" during WWII in Shanghai...

In short, two gay pedophiles had a falling out. Oikawa may have thought he was smart, but that spy was the true mastermind. Could have done with more screen time though, he was pretty cool playing the spunky journalist.

I wonder how he is a pedophile? Except if the boy's age was told somewhere, like in manga (if there is Joker Game manga, I have no idea). To me, the kid seemed like a teenager, so there's no way the guy was a pedophile. And maybe things were different back in 1940.

the thing is, in America (US at least, no idea about the rest), if you're +18 and you have any kind sexual encounter/relationship with an underage (-18) you will be considered a pedophile by them (they use the term incorrectly, but given it's punishable by the law people will keep calling it like that because that's the most common way to call an illegal relationship between an "adult" (even if the perpetrator just turned 18) and an underage (even if that underage is about to turn 18))

that kind of extreme view is kind of weird for us europeans but that's how it is for them (cultural differences, I guess?)
