My high school prom is at the same time and location as an anime convention I'm going to. Thoughts and advice?
| Okay so my senior prom is on the evening of May 20th. It just so happens that it will be in the same building and falls on the first day of Anime Central (ACen). ACen is the third biggest anime convention in North America with 30,000+ people. I do want to go to my senior prom, but I also really look forward to ACen. I already bought my tickets and am making my cosplay. I suppose I could go to ACen in the morning and come to prom for a few hours and then go back to ACen for the nightlife, but that would be a hassle and I don't have easy transportation around town. I have some friends going to prom and other friends going to ACen. Has this ever happened to anyone? Should I skip prom and just go to ACen for the whole day or should I at least go to the dance? Oddly enough, I skipped my whole junior prom last year for ACen, but junior prom sucked so I didn't care at all. I can't say this year's decision is a hard one. It wouldn't kill me to decide one way or the other, but I'm wondering if prom really is something I shouldn't miss, and if I should try my best to make time for prom. |
| Assuming you don't have a date, flip a coin by asking a girl out to prom. If she says yes stick with prom, and if not, weeab out at the convention all day instead. |

| It depends on the importance you place on the prom. I know quite a few high school students who wait their whole high school career just to attend prom; for most people it's a big moment. If you could care less about it, then.. well... I can't see much special about it - it's your personal outlook on it that matters. If you feel the "prom" experience is worth it to you then look for a date and go; if you could care less and feel you'd have a lot more fun at the convention then go to the convention. Also @Griffith, I can't imagine masquerading around trying to maintain a "social status." Do whatever you enjoy in life; if you let other's opinions guide your life then you aren't you, you're just who everyone wants you to be. Obviously follow this standard within moral reason. |
| I agree with @ShaneM If it's important to you, than go. If you don't have a date to prom, skip it and go to the convention. At least you wouldn't look like a complete loner with no love life... |
| Forget social standing, do the one you enjoy more. I didn't go to prom at all and don't feel like I missed anything important. Who knows, you might meet the love your life at the convention and then who needs prom if every day is a world class ballroom dance in your mind. |

| I have found all school funded events to be overpriced garbage. If you dont have a date, then go to the convention. You already paid for it anyways. |

| If your prom is anything like mine was people will go to take pictures, dance for like 2 songs, and mostly go get drunk. Prom was a waste of time. If you have a women, sure go. However I think the anime convention is more fun if you're alone. Also semi-related, looking in to it. Otakon dropped to number 5. I wonder why it's falling behind these days. Was pretty awesome when I went. |

| Whatever you'd prefer! If the convention seems more your style than prom, then do that. If you're excited to get a date and all that good stuff, go to prom. But if you think you're gonna have a miserable time at prom, then it's not even worth it. |

| Based on what I read, and I'm presuming, you haven't gone to prom period. If that is the case I would recommend going. At the least to say you were there and you went. I skipped both of my Junior and Senior prom, and in retrospect I do regret not going. I did go to a friends prom as her date a couple years after high school and it was a good time. So aside from that advice I would say go with a friend and not a boyfriend or girlfriend, a lot less pressure to have a good time. |

| I'd say go to the prom as it only happens once in your life. Better live and regret than not live at all. Although if you want you can just leave early if prom gets boring. Should have perhaps made a poll for this? |

| I think you should go to both... Your prom is a once in a lifetime event, so it would be a shame to miss out on it, wouldn't it? Even though I'm not one for social events, (at least the ones where I know people) I'd still go to the prom if I was in your situation, especially if I had friends or possibly someone to escort/get escorted by to the event. |

I wasn't gonna ask anyone out but this chick Sammi Eubanks fucking asked me out and I would've been a major jerk to turn her down LOL ;D So yeah I had to get a fucking suit and go, didn't dance with her and then got wasted at the afterparty, which was fun. | I'd advice you to go back home. But since I am being a dick, I shall reconsider. I suggest you go to the prom if you have a partner and sneak out to the anime convention right when it feels boring. If you don't have a partner then fuck prom. And I also suggest you stick with your besties. |

| Well, there will be another convention but only one prom and odds are you wont be seeing the kids from school in the future, but at the con its usually the same crowd. So go to the prom, what the hell...take the opportunity to tell people you hated what you really think of them. |

| Since you are actually interested in going to prom, you even have friends who are going, unlike most of the antisocial haters here, definitely make time for it, it is a rarer thing than anime conventions. On the other hand, you already got your ticket to the convention too and preparing for it excitedly. How far are the two locations? I'm sure you can go to both, even if it's more troublesome. |
