By older I mean like mid 20's or even 30. You rarely see them as main characters or even supporting characters just sort of background noise, considering japans love of females and fan service you'd think they'd be more prevalent even high school boys have a fondness for older women.
Once they get out of high school do they become less desirable?
Also can you name the last female character you saw over 25?

Lolis>Milfs. Do you even have good taste?

But really what do you expect? The biggest marketing age for anime is probably 8-12 and 13-17, so why would Milfs be introduced? Go watch GTO for a decent side-character Milf.

It's because Japanese otakus have shit taste in waifus. They rather cutesy 10 year old looking characters than sexy, mature looking adult female characters.

25 isnt a MILF. 30 barely is but why does the attractiveness just drop once they're out of high school? I remember being in high school thinking about college girls. I suppose Im curious why they'd pick a loli over a 20 year old.

What? Esdeath is in her early/mid 20's? No way is that sexy machine running at mid-30's.

Unfortunately in Japans standards most "mature" women have F-cup breasts which are laughable at best.

I've once read that Japanese have respect for the maternal figure and that's why hentai just messes with students, singles or nurses (because since they work that much, they're meant to be single as well).

That comment, well. I leave it there.

More related to your question, OP. Out of the last 10 shows I've finished watching, 7 of them had adult women as part of the cast, even as main characters. From the MC of Planetes to Cher from Wolf's Rain (what I did watch recently were the OVAs, tho).
Good luck in your research of older woman. Hopefully you don't come accross with those shows featuring 30-yo women that look like lolis lol

Because were talking about anime vs IRL. IRL the chick in her prime is always best but in anime characters are designed by us so we can make the young girl more "attractive" than the girl in her prime. It's weird but it works for anime.

Yeah it's unfortunate that mature sometimes just means big boobs. There are characters not like that though like Belldandy, Mizuho Kazami, Urd, Yoruichi.

What do you mean by mature? Body-wise? Intellect-wise? Someone else? Because in a lot of anime I have watched, 16 year old schoolgirls act with wisdom, and have fully developed (or even overdeveloped) bodies. So they are basicaly mature women, trying to fit in the school setup.

It's not surprising if you think that most anime revolve around some school-like environment. With student councils and stuff, having more power than the government. I mean in hyakka ryouran, the princess is part of a student council, and so is her brother. The tokugawa heir. And they have so much power, while basicaly being in school, or prison school, where a student council can imprison students just like that. (I am in no way saying that these are serious anime XD)

My point is school/academic life is (from what I have seen) the main focus of most anime, and therefore they had to make the characters appealing, while being at that age.

The female lead in Seirei no Moribito is in her early 30s.

But you're right, there aren't a lot of adult aged characters in anime today. It wasn't always like this. In the 90s, I remember there being a lot more mature anime with adult leads. Things likely started to change when anime entered the mainstream, and producers felt pressure to make shows more accessible.

you seem to have got it wrong, they are in their prime in highschool, not when they're middle aged.

Also you might find more mature females in older anime. Try Space Cobra for example.
I probably regret this post by now.

Older women tend to have more legitimate struggles and internal conflict, so are more interesting and honestly more attractive for it. Four "older" women I can name off of the top of my head are Nico Robin (OP), Misato Katsuragi (NGE), Riza Hawkeye (FMA), and Lisa Lisa (JJBA). Those characters are some of the best in their respective shows.

Its the problem with the audience. NEEts don't take too well to tangible authority figures being characters(hence why the trope of parents being dead or away is so damn common as casuistry of no adults being the story) and NEETs generally just despise independent and capable women(hence why the trope of emotionally dead or emotionally vulnerable "moe" girls is so propitous). Even if a adult female is introduced, usually she is made to act in some silly or immature way.
Because representation of adult and mature woman in anime fiction essentially works as challenge to a masculine power fantasy a neet would have about mainstream anime work.

I guess what I am trying to say is that as long as we are looking at vapid mainstream anime works, you won't find things that break out of the neet comfort zone - the concept of a mature and serious female character is antipodal to the logic that the target audience behaves in - hence young emotionally distraught(either abusive or passive/shy) girls and sameface blackhaired japanese 14something protagonist without character, resulting in a shambolic mess of the most generic of tropes being repeated again and again in every single work that is created "to sell".

Older characters exist in the works that are further away from mainstream kitsch, because they don't have to cater to the same NEET audience that the mainstream "BD seller" shows do. Hell, some of them even managed to find their way into at least a bit of popularity(ex: Ghost in Shell: Stand Alone Complex)

To sum up, the out-of-norm normalcy that is interesting adult "non-moe" characters in fiction is something that is not likely to be experienced in more mainstream works, hence the apparent lack of such characters overall.
