I like several shoujo anime, so I wouldn't call myself a shoujo hater. Although from many shoujo that I dropped( I now stay away from shoujo) I find the male guy that playing the hero makes me cringe in shoujo. For example when a girl is getting made fun of then the "hero"gets all mad and beats up the jerk. Those kind of moments make me cringe and I actually have to pause the anime and mentally prepare for those moments.

Edit: I made this post while mentally preparing.

Akazukin Chacha, Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, and Futari wa Precure are some of my favorite Anime, and they're all Shoujo.

The only shoujos I've even watched/read barely even fit the bill, nothing to cringe at yet, I just dislike the artstyle in the manga a lot, anime adaptations are more passable

No better or worse than works targeting any other demographic. I'll say this though: Shounen and Seinen stuff are supposed to target me, but because of that, I more easily see the stuff that goes wrong in them. Because I'm not as familiar with Shoujo works comparatively, I'm not familiar with all the quirks and cliches associated with them, allowing me to enjoy them more as a whole.

That exact situation happens in Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun. However, it's portrayed as scary, not herioc, he's hurting people, so I like what they did with it.

But in general, yeah, wish fulfillment fantasies are pretty cringe worthy.

One of my favorite anime is a shoujo. Some of the cliches in shoujo—and other anime genres—are cringe-worthy, but shoujo in general isn't bad. However, I do tend to prefer josei over shoujo, and seinen over shounen.

If you want to complain about white knights, shoujo is an odd place to start. There are shounen that revolve almost entirely on "boy is boy, therefore he must save girl, because she is girl".

Mhmm mhmm. I know what your talking about, especially after watching all the episodes of one piece, you see this a lot. It just something about the way that Shoujo does it that makes it feel so cheesy.

I think I've never seen a shoujo anime before aside from Card Captor Sakura (which I enjoyed as a child). I don't think I'd have the patience to watch it today though, but from what I remember it was pretty decent show, the same way digimon was decent for young boys. It's a show I'd definitely show to my daughter if I had one...

Anyway, I'm not in a position to judge since I've never seen one that grabbed my attention. Maybe Ghost Hunt one day, who knows...

Ghost Hunt's one of the bad ones, especially with the main female.

You might like Utena, Mawaru Penguindrum, Natsume's Book of Friends, Boku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte or Akatsuki no Yona.

Josei anime rarely take on supernatural/fantasy genre. It's usually more drama/romance/slice of life when it's a Josei.

Are people complaining saying I am generalizing an entire demographic? Hardly. Some people may not like shoujo and that is fine. I was just wondering if those guy plays hero and saves helpless girl moments make you cringe. Like I said I have liked several shoujo and have no problem with it.

That kind of scenario can only happen when the heroine is a weaksauce pussy who gets flustered easily and her love interest is too GAR for her to take. Him beating the crap of people don't make me cringe, it's the contrived situation of several people ganging on her for the sake of cheap drama that do.

What so bad with Ghost Hunt main female lead? I actually like their dynamic better than most shounen and romance themed series. They compliment each strengths and flaws. Its like reverse Gosick.

The only bad thing about Ghost Hunt was they didn't answer the crucial answer; who is the guy that kept showing in Mai'dream.

One of my top 3 anime is shoujo and I'm currently watching another shoujo anime called "Cardcaptor Sakura". I didn't like Ao Haru Ride or Tonari no Kaibutsu-Kun which were both romance shoujo. A demographic is not defined by the worst of its most common genre.

She's a damsel in distress with no personality. Gosick doesn't have a good main male or female either.

I once said that Glasslip feels like the first 20 chapters of a 100+ chapter shoujo manga in that nothing happens but by the end of it I feel like something important would start happening soon. I haven't actually read any shoujo manga but I have heard of other people's experiences with it. Am I wrong about this assumption?

Well, yeah, if you're comparing Glasslip with Kimi ni Todoke. That's the only long one (other than Skip Beat!) that has tons of chapters with nothing new happening and is just being milked at this point -- Similar to Nisekoi and other Shounen long runners :-)

A lot of longer Shoujo manga are actually really refreshing and well done, like Cat Street, Mars, Hirunaka no Ryuusei, Seiyuu-ka!, Sand Chronicles, and Taiyou no Ie. It's not just 100+ chapters of no romantic development.

I never really watched shoujo anime because I expected it to be full of the stuff you described. And the white knight stuff definitely makes me cringe even in shounen/seinen.

I'm a big fan of Saiunkoku Monogatari and also enjoyed Akagami no Shirayuki-hime. In the context of this discussion I find it interesting that both stories include an early arc where the heroine is rescued by the male lead despite the fact that both women are generally portrayed as extremely competent with strong personalities. It's almost as though the two authors felt the need to include a traditional damsel-in-distress sequence early on so they could dispense with that nonsense and move on to more interesting stories. Kamisama Hajimemashita opens with Nanami being saved by Tomoe as well, but it's less jarring in context since he's a fox spirit and she's a human pursued by demons.

Shows for younger girls don't always have this story line. None of the girls in Mahou Shoujotai Arusu need any rescuing by boys, nor does Erin in Kemono no Sou-ja Erin. Most of Miyazaki's young female characters also fit the "plucky girl" model we see in stories like Spirited Away. CLAMP's stories for younger readers like Card Captor Sakura and Angelic Layer portray plucky girls, too.

I guess some might be like that, but not all. Angel Sanctuary is over 100 chapters, but I think it has a plot. It's pretty nice looking, too.

I prefer short shoujo mangas to longer ones because the mangaka usually drags longer than it deserves like Kaichou-wa Maid-sama.
