| I barely ever see school girls that wear trousers in the UK either, just skirts everywhere I look. I'm guessing its the same the for Japanese schools, skirts are a mandatory part of the dress code. Don't ask me why, I guess some teachers have trouble telling apart the kids' genders by their faces or something so they need to tell them apart by skirts and pants/trousers instead...? |

| People should really pick up a book and read about other countries' culture. Gender roles in Japan is more traditional compared to western countries. It extends beyond clothing attire, such as even wives traditionally being in charge of the purse. |

Jeans and sweatpants are more common but skirts are pretty normal too. No girl wears a skirt in my area of Canada. You must live in Ontario or something. |

It's interesting how often dress codes are very different for males and females. It draws such a bold line - they wear pant and they wear skirts. It's the complete opposite of army uniforms, which are the same for everyone no matter the gender. They also fit the body in a way that de-sexualizes the person. You can't really tell how a person's body is like with his army uniform on. |

Girl school uniforms having skirts is standard in many countries it's not unique to Japan it's common in Asia for instance Korea and China have them on school uniforms as well. And it's also part of the school uniform of Western countries like Australia and the UK. Tho the only place where the standard size of school skirts are so short that a simple breeze is enough to see a girls underwear is Anime. Their are girls that make their skirt shorter for individuality or because it's sexy but again it isn't something unique to Japan. |

| As someone who grew up in Asia, all this discussion seems completely besides the point. A lot of schools in asia have uniforms. So everyone has to wear the same skirt and i'm 99% certain thats how it is in schools in japan. |
