| THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- I think this does what it's trying to do well, by that I mean for a retelling of a large part of the dragon ball series shortened down to 1hr 20m and changing plot points I expected soooo much worse. Even the different art style I really enjoyed and all the characters I felt were done justice. |

| If you haven't seen Dragon Ball movie the 1st you can go straight ahead to 4th, for it re-tell the story and add some interesting elements into it ( like eternal phoenix - secret to ero senin age or GT ending - after 16 years I had a chance to discover it ). Also art is better so is the background music. However story went a little down when it comes to extensive plot as they gave us in 3 previous movies - personaly I thought they would continue the pattern but oh well.. |

| This sure is a much better version of the first DB movie and in general a nice way to tell the story of the first hunt for the dragonballs with also fighting Red Ribbon and meeting everyone along their path. The best Dragon Ball movie for sure! Either way now that this is done lets go to the DBZ series! |

| Finally, a Dragon Ball movie that has the original Funi DB dub cast (no more shitty Ceyli Delgadillo for one). This is definitely the best of the four Dragon Ball movies. If you have a friend or a relative who has never seen Dragon Ball, show them this movie. This one is Dragon Ball in an 80 minute nutshell with better art and sound quality. If you want to get someone into Dragon Ball, show them this movie. |
| Only 3 replies lol, im disappointed. Large budget film with spectacular animation and art, great sound tracks and over all retelling of the original story line arcs about gathering the seven Dragon balls. That last part really gets me every time. Such a dramatic and intense moment for Goku. Its super saiyan Goku 17 years in the making! |

| This was definitely the best Dragon Ball movie of the four. The art was amazing, and it was really great that they finally used the voice actors from the original Dragon Ball! Overall they retold most of the story really well, with a few things added that are exclusive to Dragon Ball, and a few things that did not appear such as some of the characters. That ending really caught me off guard. I did not expect it to be that emotional, but it was still great! Now time to start some of the Dragon Ball Z movies. |
| Definitely the best of the four Dragon Ball films. Well, I wasn't crazy for most of the film, I prefer how the TV series handled it, but man that was a pretty good ending sequence. Time for Dragon Ball Z. |

| Third time about the red ribbon. Well it was a great movie overall, but I've seen the series recently so it's a bit boring. So I have finished all movies and series except for Kai. Hmm there's one more movie tho'. |

| This would have been a pretty good movie if it wasnt for the super saiyan innuendos. Also Bulma looked much better with her original purple hair than with her usual blue hair. |
| This movie was EPIC! I loved it, this is definitely the best Dragon Ball movie out of the four! I liked the first three movies but this was so damn good! I absolutely loved the last Kamehameha! In fact, the last few minutes were just awesome! I loved the whole scene when Goku started crying after seeing Ha-chan die, that rage, that epic beam to the sky and that epic epic Kamehameha! I loved the music in that last scene too, it fitted nicely with the Kamehameha! The aftermath of the Kamehameha was so damn cool too, Goku crying, everything levitating and breaking apart, so damn epic! A really nice ending, Shen Long granting Goku's wish of restoring Ha-chan! Goku also asked to remove the bomb from him, ahh that was such a nice ending! Such a good movie! Now, I guess it is time to finally move onto Dragon Ball Z... Can't wait to see what happens! |

| Worst movie out of all four, in my opinion. They tried to compress way too much in such a short amount of time that it simply can't do justice to the Red Ribbon Army saga. If this had been JUST the Red Ribbon Army saga, it probably would of been a lot better. Two of the redesigns were just wtf and Goku felt a bit OOC. It felt like I was watching Goten not Kid Goku. To the movie's credit, the animation was very nice and smooth. If DB has this budget for its' major battles, it would be pretty awesome. But, despite the smooth animation the fighting was subpar so they didn't even use it to their advantage to show some slick looking martial arts. And that ending was garbage. You can totally tell they came off of GT; they so wanted to make Goku a Super Saiyan and ending with the Kamehameha was a tad boring. |

| Definitely a fun watch, but I feel like they tried a little too hard with the fanservice. The animation was definitely awesome--Getting a chance to see Yamcha look seriously cool for once was a nice change. With all the power level wanking though, I fully expected them to make Goku go Super Saiyan to finish off Commander Black. I guess I just thought this movie felt a little heartless compared to other ones because it focused so heavily on calling back to moments in the series. |

| The animation is so dark. I'm sorry again for General Blue, even in alternative settings he still die, for the 3rd time :( The Muten Roushi voice is bad. In the end i thougt Goku will become SSJ :)) In conclusion was a nice movie. |
| I say out of all the DB movies, this one is the best of them all, even with its fast pace. Also the art and animation is an upgrade to the main series, I like some of the changes from the original. |

| When I decided I was going to finally watch all the OG Dragon Ball movies, I went in expecting to save the best for last, but this was easily my least favourite of the four. Animation-wise, this is definitely the strongest of the four but to be honest, I kinda prefer the visuals of the earlier films. I think there's a charm to the older visuals that the more sharp lines here don't really capture, but I think I just largely dislike the GT influence in the art style. I think the colour palette skews too dark here, I just don't think it really meshes well with the vibe of early Dragon Ball. Also not really a fan of Goku wearing his GT gi either for most of the movie, I like the Gi design in general, but for classic Dragon Ball I would've preferred him wearing his classic, which he did briefly at the start of the film when showing Bulma his Dragon Ball. Goku's clothes is a nitpick, but on a similar note, all the redesigns were pretty bad. Going in, I only knew about Black's re-design. I had assumed his was changed because of the racist caricature thing but then I saw they re-design Major Metallitron to have that same caricature design so I don't know, I guess they just felt like giving the Red Ribbon Army several downgrades in designs. One last negative thing about the visuals, the part where Goku's traveling on the Nimbus in the forest as the RR army shoot at him is sort of disorientating when they do the faux 3D thing. It doubles as a positive, since I do think that looks kinda neat. And like I stated up front, animation-wise it is the best, there's definitely some visual highlights here, my favourite being the Wolf Fang Fist where we see Yamcha transform to a wolf. Really cool way to highlight the technique. In terms of the audio, I'd probably say this was the best of the dub efforts. I'm just glad to get Stephanie Nadolny back as Goku. This might just come to down to nostalgia but when I think of Kid Goku, this is the voice I think of. The OST was just okay, barely noticed it tbh. But that's better than being distractingly bad at least. As for the actual meat & potatoes of the movie, much like the previous three this operates as something of alternate version of the base story. Last time, they combined the 22nd Budokai and Red Ribbon Army arc, this time they combined the Search for the Dragon Ball & Red Ribbon Army arcs. To start with the positive, I do think this mostly flows pretty well. Like if somebody never watched Dragon Ball before and started with this film, I think they could be convinced thinking this is just how the series starts off. I guess what I'm saying is that it feels pretty cohesive, and it should be commended for stitching two arcs together in way that feels rather natural. As for how the arcs themselves were adapted, I'm less of a fan. Let's start with the Search for the Dragon Balls arc. The cool thing about the alternate telling's of these movies were seeing how'd they recontextualize characters or iconic moments to fit within their new narrative, but this movie doesn't really have that. Some instances have removed context, like Oolong just showing up in the desert as oppose to his how town scheme, but otherwise the content covered here feels mostly 1 to 1, just condensed. The one major exception to this is Roshi's Kamehameha, where he uses against the Red Ribbon Army battleships. That's a really cool way to meld the two arcs together, the only problem is this is exactly how Curse of the Blood Rubies re-contextualized the initial Kamehameha. To be clear, it makes sense that Path to Power would borrow this concept, that was a highlight of Blood Rubies, and it makes perfect sense for what they were going for. And having Goku use it on a stronger battleship afterward is at least escalating on the idea. For me though, this means that the only real re-contextualization they do here, is directly lifted from an older film. Meaning that all I'm really getting from these parts of the story, are recaps. The novelty of seeing how they change things up is removed when it's just repeating ideas from other films. Now there's still fun to be had in these parts, in fact I enjoyed them more than the Red Ribbon Army material, but it still felt a lot less entertaining than the manga and less interesting than the first attempt at retelling this arc. As for the Red Ribbon Army material, it's my second favourite arc in the OG Dragon Ball (so no Z sagas), and the General Blue section might be my favourite part of OG Dragon Ball. This is to say that my disappointment here isn't from any dislike towards that material, but the opposite. I guess the easiest way to discuss my problems, is it largely feels like it removed all the charm, fun, and adventure that made the original arc such a blast to read, and reduced it largely to a sample of the more boring action pieces. I know concessions had to be made, like the Dr. Slump crossover wouldn't have fit, and it makes sense to reduce Blue to the singular encounter, but understanding that doesn't change that the end result is me losing out on all my favourite parts of the story in exchange for the lamer parts. To be fair, I do like the initial stuff with Eighter (I'll get to him more later), and they did keep Black killing Red because Red only wanted to wish for height which is one of my favourite parts of the story, but not much else of it is retained. One of my favourite parts of the movie is when Bulma & crew escape and see a bunch of tanks heading their way, Oolong freaks out but it's revealed that it's just Goku carrying a bunch of tanks he defeated. I love that gag, and it's one of the few parts that captures what made the ending Army bit super fun, where Goku single-handily takes out the Red Ribbon Army without breaking a sweat. Obviously, more than just a sweat breaks in this version. So I'll just be blunt, the ending of this movie is awful. At first when the Kamehameha failed. I noticed the sky was pretty dark and I assumed the solution was going to be the full moon getting exposed and Goku going Great Ape to defeat the Battle Jacket. I thought that would've been a clever was to combine the climax of both arcs being covered here. But instead, Eighter appears out of nowhere to save Goku. Then he dies shortly after, making Goku scream for a long time with so much visual effects that I was positive he was going to go Super Saiyan, and then he just did a more powerful Kamehameha to win. The wish on to save Eighter's life and remove the bomb makes sense as an ending, but the movie just ends there. We don't even get to see Eighter, we hear him so we know he's alive, but it feels like it ends so suddenly that we're robbed of a cathartic reunion. I basically hate all of this. Like I guess it's cool to have some parallels to the Cell arc, and the animation here is great, but this is such a garbage ending. Feels like Eighter comes out of nowhere just to give Goku a cheap emotional power boost, and none of it is very dramatically satisfying for me. I suppose my Great Ape idea doesn't give them a wish to end on, which at least Eighter's death does, but in every other way I feel like it would've been the better conclusion. Though it seems I'm in the minority for disliking the ending. 4/10. Might be a bit harsh, but I spent much of the runtime either bored or by the ending annoyed. Probably would've got a 5 if I didn't dislike the ending so much. |
| The art and the comedy was really well done but the story became frustrating to keep watching as how it unfolds on the last 1/3 that turned a nice comedy adventure movie into a uneven flashy actions stuff and wouldn't have surprise if Goku had gotten super saiyan at the end. |
| My first introduction to the series and that was a movie of two parts of which I liked the latter a lot more, it felt like the pacing of that was more natural and the adventures fun but that's hardly a complaint considering this is supposed to adapt about 45 eps, lol. On a serious note though, the action near the second half's end was definitely intriguing but more or less average for me. Jinzouningen-8-san's sacrifice was pretty touching though but luckily the dragon balls were attained before permanent danger. Goku's power up in the end was cool to watch and I know it will definitely have a lot more significance in the tv series so I'm curious to see how that'll be. Iconic ED too, 6/10. |
