Based on the preview, next episode there's a cat that died alongside a human and they play twister?

The cat is probably Ginti's pet or something since it catches one of the buttons that fly off when he tears his shirt in the opening.

So Castra (the head of ?? department) takes care of sorting/sending the dead to the arbiters I guess, since she selected two blood droplets on her screen which then turned into two texts that she moved into some block.

Nona seems to be overseeing the whole organizations since Castra asked

Then there is the information bureau/department headed by Quin (the woman with eye patch or w/e in the opening) that edits memories sent by Castra and sends them to arbiters, and also conducts some tests on the arbiters.

Oculus is apparently the head of the "tower" and Nona used to be an arbiter that was promoted to a manager. I wonder if every floor of the tower has its own manager or something (can't remember clearly from episode 2).

Seemingly they are having some problems since Castra and Quin need assistance from Oculus and Nona is pissed off at him for being so laid back (not sure if I got that right?).

Angel Beats is the most prominent example, but any anime seriously dealing with similar themes could count. Monogatari, Madoka, AnoHana, etc. This is but cookie-cutter fare for this type of thing - you start off episodically and slowly introduce darker themes whilst leading to an emotionally disturbing climax. It's not necessarily good writing, just abusing basic human empathy.
And yes, I am annoyed (and envious) that people enjoy this. It's the same thing that comes out every second season, but nobody seems to care. Six months ago, it was Zankyou no Terror. Now it's this. In the end, I don't hate Death Parade enough to drop it. It's just... really boring.

There is barely any similarities here. You are describing a normal process of writing (a beginning, build up and an emotional climax) I don't remember any disturbing climax for Monogatar, Madoka and Anohana, they were all bittersweet at most. The darker themes in Death Parade were already there from the start, from Death Billiards.

ZnT seems to fit the most of your idea of rehashed supernatural dark anime, ironically enough it's not supernatural. Being boring is more the reason you should drop it, hate would usually motivate people, apathy doesn't.

People care for the differences, what's new is the anime presenting, not for some fundamental similarities here and there, otherwise people wouldn't enjoy certain genres, like romance for example, since most of them are fundamentally extremely similar.

I was going to reply to that absurd comment but yours said everything that needed to be said. By his/her logic many great shows are rehashes because they share the same basic process of writing whether the book be Narnia, LOTR, ASoIaF or all DC/Marvel comics ect... What really bothered me about that comment was "In the end, I don't hate Death Parade enough to drop it. It's just... really boring." Are there really people with this much free time to spare to live their lives wasting it watching something they don't like? What a tragedy if I end up like that.

I love how Nona spells out stuff that Decim already knows so that the audience can follow it too.
The old man with the glasses is evil. In case we didn't notice, they even gave him an evil laugh.
Looks like Nona discovered something in the scene with the lollipop girl. I don't know if the subtitles were awful or if my english just sucks, but I have no idea what they were talking about.
Onna plays the role of damsel in distress so that we can have an action scene. Will Ginti be punished for trying to kill an arbiter? Can arbiters even die? Should I care about Onna being targeted even though humans can't die in the bar?
The tale about the two kids could have been interesting if it didn't look awful and lazy. Who am I kidding, it's probably a metaphore for Onna and Decim and the show could have spent time developing their relationship instead.
It's time to abandon the ship before it sinks even further.

Interesting episode. After the drama we finally get some more insight into the kind of "operation" that they're running and what lies behind it. We also get to see some more personnel who's in the judgment business. Ginti seems the complete opposite to Decim and quite frankly I have to say that I find his personality completely unsuitable for judging people, but I suppose he'll be rather skilled at "extracting the darkness" from them.

I really enjoyed how this episode broke the formula a little bit. We got to see quite a few different plot devices here, like the little hostage situation and the brief fight between Ginti and Decim.

Nona's conversation with the old man (Oculus?) was also really intriguing, especially with his statement that he is closest to being God. Interested to see what other religious references will show up.

Also, I like how we got a bit more explanation in terms of the scope of the arbiters and their job. I'm curious about the "bureau" that Nona mentioned.

Decim's relationship with Onna was also a nice touch. I didn't consider that she might be breaking the rules by being there, and Decim's attachment to her is sweet--though that could end up being really heartbreaking later on.

Looks like we'll be seeing things from Ginti's perspective next week.

Finally! The start to a plot! I was beginning to worry that the show would be a plot per episode and not really focus on the arbiters and that it would get dull, but finally, some plot!

And I think some of us saw her being a human coming. How else would she have no memories? I wonder if they'll ever have to judge her

Man I need that pool table! Pool table: Universe Edition.

Great episode. Lmao how last week people were bitching about how this has no plot. So we get some plot and now they bitching about how this is ep was boring lol.

Anyway got to see Ginti. Ginti vs Decim was good even if it was just a quick fight. So Onna knew she was dead already? That's crazy. Nona is still cool as hell. 89 years she been running things and seems to hold it down quite well. Oh snap black girl. Damn 7000 people dying every hour!? You know that's a problem. Next week is going to be a nice change of pace.

6/5 for that pacing.

So, the question is - is Decim Jimmy?
And I don't know why but I found that book creepy but maybe I just remembered Monster I guess.

I hope Onna stays with us for a while as it's very interesting character. I think her judging would be the end of this series.

Heavy background story episode this time. We got to know how other arbiters work (it's interesting every one of them has different attack methods) and it was noticable that women lead while men serve.

And there have to be tons of arbiters when you think about it. Like ten millions or even more. Afterlife sure is busy place. I wonder what they are if not human. Or were there human before?

That's it, the last tiny bit of expectation and respect is lost when the show suddenly turns into a battle-shonen. Troll OP, pretentious judgment system, weird unlikeable characters, cliche story with no substance, world that deliberately left unexplained for the sake of misery, retelling of information that we already know without providing anything new to add to the mix etc. There are some really serious problems with the story planning. It's starting to feel like Zankyou no Terror with its pseudo-philosophically approach if not for the first three episodes plays on my expectation.

I like how we got into the plot of the show more this episode. Had some good explanations.

But really, that fat glasses guy. I seriously thought he was reincarnated and died again. And then the little boy was actually Ginti. And the black haired girl was actually a human. (I just noticed they never gave her a legitimate name haha.)

The many plot twists of this show...

yeah I thought jimmy & chavvot were decim & onna in the sense that one is human, so that communication barrier is there between them (since they don't think the same way). it's not a very strong connection but either way please god don't let there be romance between them ._.

Very interesting episode; I'm pleased to see some new characters getting introduced and more of the mythology behind the world being hinted at and explained. Awesome details like the pool table, Castra's lollipop (and her criptic dialogue, for that matter), and the Decim vs. Ginti fight/aftermath of said fight made the episode a thumbs up in general.

The pacing still feels off to me and I disagree with a good number of the writing choices, but we shall see where it goes. I feel that Decim will be an interesting character to explore, and I very much hope I'm right.

We interrupt this one-game-a-week anime to bring you information that actually is relevant to the state of this world being shown.

So the man self-touting as being the one closest to god also states that "God is long since gone". Add that to the end when Nona had her chat with Castra, the bone helmet girl, and what I'm getting from this is that God either got bored and abandoned the universe, or somehow disappeared, and the arbiters and this "Tower" of theirs is left to deal with the aftermath of all that. Castra talking about humans dying at a rate of "7,000 per hour" being too fast and asking Nona for some relief shows how short-staffed they are here..

To be perfectly honest, having a "One-Game-a-Week" theme is good and all, but I don't mind episodes like this as well, where we get to unravel a bit more of the mystery of this world.

Can't wait to see Ginti judging next episode. With his sort of temper, I get the feeling it's gonna be hella different from Decim's games.
