anyone else noticed that when Ginko dreamed memories that were not his (but from Mujika) the exact same words come out, that he attracts mushi so he needs to travel, at first I thought that the Kuchiniwa had taken Ginko instead and Mujika became younger and all that O_O but after clarifying that those were memories from Mujika, let's assume, then could it be that sometime when Ginko is old he'll become a Lord of some life's river or something?

This was a nice episode. I like that Ginko was able to interact with another mushishi as it gave a small insight into the type of personal issues that a mushishi goes through.

that end scene so good
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

Every time I climb a mountain, I think I'll be looking out for a Kuchinawa.

His wife killed the previous master because she wants him to stay. He had no choice but to become the master to prevent chaos in the mountains. Now that he's old, he opts to sacrifice himself and pass on the role of the master to the Kuchinawa instead of making Kodama undergo the process of becoming the next master. What a great man.

Maybe it was because I watched this in the middle of the night and I was really sleepy, but I found this one very confusing, always wondering 'what the hell's going on'. Better by the ending, but like I said...maybe it's more clear after a good night's sleep

Whoa Mujika's wife was a real yandere.

I wonder why the women had so much children...Mujika mentioned that the water from the mountain started to smell like sake so maybe that was it? That the water was actually turning into sake or maybe had a placebo effect on them?

It was nice to see that Mujika made a great friend before his last moments. He met a fellow mushishi who was similar to him(Both attracted mushi and are both mushishi). It must have been both happy and sad to see that Ginko would try to save him even if it they both might've been eaten. Leaving people behind who care about you...when you thinking about it is really depressing.

Self-sacrificing stories always get to me.

Man! That giant snake wrapped around the mountain gave me the creeps, and still does when thinking back to it! It felt like the thing was lookin' right at me, lol.

This episode wasn't confusing imo, but I tend to not care much for understanding what's goin' on in this show, i just take it in as it is, but this ep was least confusing than previous ones.

I really liked this ep, and I completely agree, I was thinking earlier, that all the characters look mostly the same, and more so in the young adult men and women for me, I don't notice the children looking the same, but I'm sure they all do as well (and I'll probably start noticing now lol)

This ep showed a great side of Ginko, I liked how the guardian was about to be taken by the Kuchinawa and was sobbing about his mistakes or something and Ginko's like "Yeah, spare the details for later we gotta get you out of here". I like serious Ginko, and the ending, now I do wonder, do the village people see the mushi snake wrapped around the mountain or just Ginko?

That snake is still creepin' me out.

Wow, didn't know about the smoking.. Thanks forumers, wouldn't know it w/o you. :)
But I did notice that the other mushi master's hair changed colours.. Has the white
colour something to do with being a mushishi? I didn't really get the part when that
other mushishi came back to the village although he has already been vanished...
Is it like a reminiscence, or what? Brr.. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the atmosphere ^.~

Interesting thought; we'll find out next episode. In regards to that second inquiry, Ginko mentions outright that it was a memory that wasn't his own he experienced; that's what we saw.

This episode waylaid me with its emotional depth. ;___;

That just makes me so sad. Mujika's wife loved him so much she killed a god to keep him there with her, just to end up dying not long after because she couldn't handle the energy of the mountain. And Mujika was left there to replace the mountain god for God knows how long just because of what his wife did. Was it worth it to him? That seems like a severe punishment, especially keeping in mind that he didn't want to be the mountain god. In the end, he had to sacrifice himself because of what she did. Imagine if she'd become a wanderer like he was instead; they both could've still been alive and lived for much longer.

Ginko's role in this episode was really good too. It was moving to see how he was putting his own life at risk to save Mujika, even though it was to no avail.

If anyone asks me why I love Mushishi, I'm showing them this episode.

Liked this episode, Mujika's past was pretty sad though. He wanted to stay with Saku but he can't and Saku killed the guardian so Mujika can replace it and stayed as the guardian of the mountain.

And damn that is a huge ass snake in the end lol, scary stuff.

The Kuchinawa is a large serpentine mushi that eats mountain Gods(Guardians), then takes their place. Their cry resembles the sound of a large bell in the distance. When this mushi consumes a mountain God(Guardian), it does so completely; all the memories and objects associated with the original God(Guardian) disappear.

No matter how many times I rewatch this episode, the ending scene always gives me chills.

Interesting to see another mushishi besides Ginko. I feel like I've learned a lot about Ginko's character too.

He travels out of necessity, and while it seemingly suits his personality, he in fact wants to settle down and have a place to belong. (At this point, I wonder how old Ginko is, and how long he's been travelling.)

In the Heavy Seed episode, I questioned why Ginko helps others? It surely couldn't be entirely altruistic... He might simply want to restore the balance of nature... But now I wonder if Ginko does this partly because he wishes to be accepted by humans... Ginko is wise, complex and shrouded in mystery. It is in his actions and in his rare emotional outbursts that we see Ginko is also a slightly conflicted character. He doesn't always know what's best, and sometimes lets his emotions make decisions for him... But he knows his place in the world, and accepts it with complete grace...

Mujika is interesting, and as a mushishi, feels so similar to Ginko. I'm sure Ginko could sympathize with Mujika in the dream he saw. (Also, Saku, that girl, poisoned and killed a guardian, and fed it to her man. What the holy crap cakes!? Talk about doing anything for love.) With the similarities between Ginko and Mujika, I wondered if all mushishi suffered similar plights... but I guess not. Kodama is something of a mushishi after Mujika's death, but he has a place to belong. Sure his training started out of necessity, (just like I'm sure Ginko's and Mujika's did) but had he not been abandoned on the mountain, he would have been a relatively normal child. Just one that could see mushi.

Kuchinawa looks cool. The mugara-nori scene was awesome. It's sad that no one remembers Mujika. That is all.

Not my favorite episode, but still a pretty good one!
So sad what people did to kids...
But the death of Mujika didn't really bother me, it felt sort of natural? The right course.
It was not his fault that the previous and true guardian of the mountain was killed, but he was able to stay in one place and get married, wich were things he desired. And by calling Kuchinawa, he was giving back the work for a creature who could manage all that power and saved the poor kid (his apprentice) of getting into a lifestyle that isn't suitable for humans.
Mujika was wise and cared about the kid and the mountain.

Another highlight was the display of emotion by Ginko. We can get to know more about him and his personality <3

Ps: For all those who are talking about the babies looking the same: Mushishi is all about the scenario, nature and the history. Human character are secondary, so they don't get many details, the ones that get a little more detailed features and clothes are the ones active in the history. You can see how most of the human characters are always using really simple yukatas and don't get a lot of attention to their faces, etc.
Well, at least that's my perception of it ^^'

To help with some confusions, even those from 6 years ago xD

smoking: he is smoking a mushi most likely or herbs that create or attract a smoke like mushi that captures other mushis and doesn't let them go for a period of time.

Hole: weird things happen on the mountain especially when there is no master or if the master is inactive. Presumably, bad things as if they aren't bad then they wouldn't need a mushishi.

Wife: not sure if she was a wife already, regardless, she killed the past master and gave the body to Mujika so he can replace the current master.

Pain: I'm not sure, but I think being master is painful. And the wife died because of being exposed to the energy there, the river of life that flows strongly in the mountain.

Kids: the river of life affects the actual river there and people drink them and become really fertile and give birth to lots of kids. These kids cannot be fed and are left on the mountain to die.

The Kid: didn't die, only one that didn't get eaten by animals. Raised by Mujika presumably until his siblings died and his parents heard he was alive and was taken back.

Sacrifice: The kid needed to eat Mujika. :p If not that, then as he said, being master is painful. But I think it was the former because if there was a way to just give up being master, then he wouldn't have been eaten and he would just call the new guardian and give up the mountain.

Ginko trying to save him: the villagers love Mujika, he didn't want that to happen especially as he probably had an idea that being eaten would mean being erased from existence. Only him and the kid remembers Mujika because they were there or close when it happened.

As I understand it, he could have given up being the master but didn't want anyone else (the kid in this case, as he is the only suitable one in the village) to carry the burden of being a master.
So in order to prevent the Kodama from having to live as a master, secluded in the mountain for the rest of his life, he chose to summon and be eaten by a master mushi.
He either had to sacrifice his own life or, in a way, sacrifice Kodama's future.

A fascinating episode overall, loved how Mujika bent the truth when talking about how the master mushi was killed and his reaction when Ginko tells him how he also attracts mushi.

Episode following in the narrative setting that of the previous, the impact on the viewer is less strong on an emotional level, but the story told is still very fascinating and does not lose its bite. An episode from which we can also draw some lessons, the most important is that on freedom, as an absolute good. Satisfied once again the episode, Yay!

Mujika's wife killed the Guardian Boar before he could've done it himself so he could stay with her without having to bear the pain of being the mountain's master but it quickly ended up overwhelming her in the end, giving the guy no choice but to continue her legacy. He had imparted enough knowledge to his student and after he had lived past the point where he deemed as necessary, he decided to end it by getting eaten by the Kuchinawa to prevent any more future masters of the mountain to take up his painful mantle. He had disappeared as silently as he had arrived but I guess that it was for the best.

Imagine turning to the right and seeing a giant white snake coiled on a mountain and sleeping. Simply majestic...
