Boy am I glad I don't see creatures like that one on top of the mountain. Oh, and while I liked this episode, I'm sure if you put many of the characters together, especially the kids, I wouldn't be able to tell them apart... Don't know if that's an issue, but I'm just saying.

Really good episode, my favourite yet.
Damn, that Kuchinawa was huge!
Also, something I didn't understand:
Does Ginko smoke, just to not attract Mushis?

Yep, he smoke so that Mushi won't be attracted to him. Hahah! LOL! Maybe I'll smoke too! Just kidding. But seeing that Kuchinawa over the mountain is just fantastic! It's amazing! ^__^

Don't want to sound like a broken record, but I also noticed the kids similarities. Once I started this episode I wondered if I popped in the wrong DVD, then I realized, it could have been any episode I previously saw >>

The mountain with the giant Kuchinawa on the top was a magnificent view.
We also got to know that mushishis (tend to) attract mushis. I'm also wondering if there are any other deep reasons why Ginko wanted to save that one old man at all cost.

Splendid episode once again.
I really loved the flashback about the old dude, I'd never thought that it was her wife who killed Mushi-sama, but at least that really make sense.

and we finally get some more hints on the mushishi way of life
i wonder if Ginko was feeling a little nostalgic when he saw the kid with so much resolve in their job, and remembering how he used to be when younger...

I think he discussed that in the first episode...remember the smoke binding the mushi "ghost"? Also another ep (can't recall which at the moment) he talked about how he's always attracted mushi and how the smoke helps keep them away.

One of my favorite episodes. The ending with Kuchinawa was really cool and totally unexpected. More so because the largest and perhaps most powerful Mushi is also the one with the least info.

Not just the kids, but all the one-shot characters are pretty similar. All the young men have dark hair and a goatee/5 oclock shadow, for example.

Yeah. The faces are kinda similar but it's not important though.

Again, another wonderful episode.

We got 2 and half Mushishi's in this ep. :)

Mujika's backstory was kinda sad :(

I don't how to say this but a different Ginko here is really great.

About the smoking thing, I just realized it and find it interesting :D

Kuchinawa being at the mountain peak is just a magnificent view.

Fantastic. I felt something was slightly distinct with this episode; I don’t know how to explain it, but it certainly felt so to me.

I’m impressed at how character development can be included in such a subtle way, but still be noticeable enough to acknowledge the changes. Ginko showed more of himself this episode; they way he acted when the Master was calling for the Kuchinawa to leave it his place… It was different from the Ginko we’ve seen before. Probably reminded him of his past experiences, maybe before becoming a Mushi-shi. And the fact he solely smokes to prevent attracting Mushi reveals simply how selfless he truly is.

The Kuchinawa at the peak of the mountain is surely one of the most grandiose sights I’ve ever witnessed.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

I second both remarks... I guess I'm slow on the uptake when it comes to subtleties like the smoking habit. I like how subtle the creator is, though, in including that. Makes the whole series seem even more well-thought out.

Yes... the kids do all look the same. .___. Only downside. Some of the guys that Ginko runs into tend to look the same, too. I guess there's only so far you can go with adhering to reality (Japanese people usually having black hair and dark eyes) and making anime characters look different.

Why did the master want to sacrifice himself anyways? I never understood that. Did he think that he could not handle the role of guardian? Or did he think his role would disrupt the growth of vegetation? Or was it related somehow to the girl who killed the boar?

Exactly my question.

The hole in the mountain was visible, not only to Ginko, but to regular people too and after a few seconds it disappeared. If anyone understood that part, I would appreciate a reply with the answer.

And one other thing that confused me is related to Ginko's fear for the villagers. I mean, sure the Mushi-Shi Mujika taught Kodama everything he needed for survival, but apparently the villagers are in danger from Kuchinawa. Ginko said it himself, Kuchinawa couldn't care less about humans (although it looks like a majestic being, I see it as an evil beast which could destroy the village if provoked in any way).

This episode was confusing and left a lot of unanswered questions... Unless I just wasn't paying enough attention. I was wondering why he had to sacrifice himself too. Was he just getting too old and weak to fend off Mushi? And (who I assume is, since it's only implied) his wife killed the previous Kuchinawa or Master to get him to stay?

And as someone mentioned before, the hole was also still left sort of a mystery.

Komyakusuji (River of Life) flows through the mountain, causing unnatural phenomenon, and anomalies in and around the mountain, including changes in the water, fruits etc. Which is why a 'Master' is needed to control the flow of energy, and as Ginko mentions in the beginning, its 'vegetation season' which means higher energies leaking out/from the Komyaku channel. The hole in the mountain is because of leakage of high energy creating that anomaly, or it could also be due to a momentary lapse of control of the master over the mountain probably (as we see that at that time when Ginko see's the hole, the old man is summoning the Kuchinawa). In either case, its the energy from Komyaku/river of life creating that 'anomaly'

As for why the master sacrifices himself...he is old and after his death there has to be a master. The kid who he takes up as student could be the next one, but as Ginko mentions, learning the master's technique involves a trial where the subject is infused with mushi that makes up mountain's 'consciousness', and if the person is able to control so much energy from the river of life, and control the mushi, only then he can become a master. It is implied that failing that the person could die as well. At any rate, no chance of living a normal life, and each master needs to have a successor who has to go through the same test and make the same sacrifice for the village.

To arrange for a nearly immortal kuchinawa as a master instead of making human beings go through that trouble seems a more humane and sensible option.

Yeah, the character designs definitely are often alike, I've noticed this.

I guess I agree that this was the best episode yet, but what I like the most about it is that is the most magical one in the same time. It kinda reminded me of Mononoke Hime.

A bit of Ginko's character got revealed. Not much, but still it was good.

Along with the last episode this added much more depth into Ginko's life as a Mushi-shi, which would add to the main story line I originally missed. Ginko is potraid more relateble with some thing's that are out of his reach or his curiousity leading him to disobey a rule as seen in the last episode. This would be one of my favourite episodes again.
@Koreye thanks for the information. Was wondering what that circle was about

It was sad that the Mujika had to sacrifice himself for a new guardian, but it was also interesting to see a different side of Ginko, how he was desperate to save Mujika. Apparently he and Mujika are the same, they tend to attract mushi so they can't stay in one place for too long :( Oh and the kid's parents are definitely selfish...leaving their child in the mountains, but then coming to take him back because all of their other children died =_=
