Should mecha anime just stop giving specific names to their weapons and just call them mecha?

I'm watching Alnoah Zero and after hitting the very typical exposition scene, two men started describing mechs at a bar acting like it's the usual Tuesday. Then one faggy gentlemen was describing mechs or something and called them "KT9" or whatever fucking jargon Urobuchi came up with this time. I don't even remember that's how boringly lame the name is.

Do you think anime should just stop trying to give specifically lame names to their mechas and just call them "mechs?"

Do you think some anime has interesting mecha names besides garbage like "KT9"?

Nope, I like when Mechs have names.

Especially in Eureka 7 with Nirvash for example.

I think it would be a nice addition for real robot models to be given appropriately colloquial nicknames more often, yes.

US battleships are named after states, cities, people.

Some gun names are memorable.
Desert Eagle
The "Magnum"

"Panther" tanks

KT9 though? like wtf, I'd rather they just name them mecha-lolis and I totally would have been fine with something like that.

You're confusing official designations, common names, and nicknames.

Well yeah there's an overabundance of military weapons so of course it's going to have to enter names like AK46, G36A1, MP40s, and such but in a lot of mecha anime, there's only like 3 different brands of mechs excluding the main character mechs (Because they're so goddamn special)

I don't like to watch mecha anyway.
Deconstruction ≠ Darker & Edgier
Trope ≠ Cliché (Face it, nothing is completely original. Can't make something from nothing so to say.).
Fanservice ≠ Ecchi (Though ecchi can please the fans!)
Popular ≠ Sucks... maybe
Seinen = K-ON! Shounen, Shoujo, Seinen and Josei are demographics.
Anime/Manga = Japanese Cartoons! Deal with it.

Those complicated names gives mecha a bit more identity, and as ridiculous as some of these codenames may sound, it's necessary. How lame would it be if robots in an anime are just called "Mecha 1" and "Mecha 2"...

Sometimes they really should just call it a robot/mech/mecha. Ditto with zombie movies, just call them a fucking zombie.

A zombie by any other name would smell as putrid?

Mechs just need titles, otherwise you won't remember them.

I mean there are some ridiculous names, like Independence, Freedom and stuff like that.

But I like the ones like the Artemis, Valkyrie, etc etc. Also gives them character.

The names are not really a problem. It's much more memorable than model numbers. Way more ridiculous is that when they use a weapon they need to shout the long and complicated name of the weapon...

Honestly though I don't really give much of a shit about the names.

Though some of the designs though, they look more like plastic toys rather than weapons of war.

They should have names otherwise you wouldn't be able to hear the epicness of Simon shouting Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Any time <insert name here> Gurren Laggan is heard, it really feels epic.

I don't understand the question

Gundam has both Gundams and Mobile Suits often referred to as such. They also have production designations and actual names. Seems like everything covered there.

Example: MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam

In Aldnoah, mechs in general are called Kataphrakts.
The Earth Forces us a model line called KG. Inaho's orange one is KG-6 Sleipnir, and the KG-7 used by everyone else is called Areion.
tl;dr learn the difference between model numbers and names.

Yeah, they should stop doing that. Names that are a combination of arbitrary letters and numbers like that are hard to remember and a rather silly naming scheme. It's just like guns in real life, and what's worse is you always have some gun otaku bragging about how he can memorise every gun and their specific details.

Not that I disagree, but this is a different issue. At least the impression won't be due to the mechas' names.
In this respect, A.Z might be memorable though, because the Kataphrakts operate under alien source of power, which makes them closer to the super robot type, while the KG-6's are armaments most real robots have in common. It's rare to see the two in one series, so I'd remember them along with other series like Reideen/2007 and Majestic Prince.

It's the same with cars. Can't call every mobile vehicle on the street 'a car' and understand to which one the others refer to.

Well there's always a certain name associated to cars. You don't call this car MODEL 454 shortened to M454, you just call it a fucking honda civic. People give general names to technology for sake of simplicity and the same goes for in the military.

A)Gun X Sword, Fafner in the Azure: Dead Aggressor, and Armored Trooper VOTOMS in that order.
B)As mentioned above, Break Blade (Movies came first, series used footage from the movies, no idea about the quality of either).

True that, but they also give serial numbers to every part in them and combined production lines descriptions. While professionals could use non-names in professional discussions, and in anime as well, sometimes fans use it for brevity, authors could use it for characterization and brevity :L
