I'm guessing the original thread on this one got KO'd by MAL problems? Anyway, this episode was so much better than episode 7. I loved Martinez looking like a golden god every time he completely thwarted Date just because it's a nice contrast to the usual Ippo "if I fight my hardest there will be a light at the end of the tunnel" thinking. Plus the feeling of the manga was well transferred this episode, something that hasn't always happened with the anime adaptations of Ippo.

Yeah, I really liked where they placed Martinez's line of "Goodbye Eiji Date" as he is falling as opposed to the impact of his corkscrew in the manga.

An absolutely amazing episode. I guess the man to beat for Ippo is that Mexican guy. If he can beat that guy then no one would ever win him.
This is the episode that will make anyone who was thinking of starting to box to forget about it. All those broken bones, i felt pain only watching him.
By the way the i fight with everything i got to impress the one i love is a good idea since is probably one of the main reasons a man fights hard. A man always fights harder when his girl is watching him.

What an inspirational fight, despite Date losing it was still emotional to watch, now Ippo's feelings are solidified, he's going to get a lot better now!

I love these fights soo much, because unlike most shounens, you really don't know who is going to win. At all. I went back and forth between them rapidly at different points, it was an amazing match.

That was BRUTAL, and hard to watch at points. Date was torn apart piece by piece. It's amazing, all that effort and fury and Ricardo wasn't even scratched. As if Ippo's spar wasn't enough of a wake up call, seeing the person who beat him, who he looked up to, destroyed like that has got to have an effect. Regardless, it's all up to Ippo to take on that monster now. Date's finished.

One of the most dangerous fights we've since in the whole series.. :-( A heartbreaking lost for Date.. I was so scared for him with all the fractures.. but still mustered the strength to keep on fighting.. My heart sunk when Martinez dodged after Eiji's corkscrew punch..
The scene in the hospital was touching.. don't couldn't help myself chuckle at the lame "baton pass" Haha.. but for Ippo.. It looks like he's more stronger and focused to train even more! :-)

MY GOD, I don't think there will be a fight that will ever even come close to how dangerous that one was. I was feeling Date's pain during the whole thing.

There's no words to describe all these feelings. Sure I had read this beforehand in the manga, but it's still just amazing. "Wanted to show her how cool I am" "Damn it", rarely do such simple words carry so much emotion and meaning. Can't wait to see THAT match, I'm probably going to faint :p

Date really gt messed up, that fight was just insane, I'm that Martinez was able to dodge that hit after the heartbreak shot. That dude is really invincible, looks like Ippo's new goal is to beat Martinez; that hospital scene was kind of sad, but I can understand the meaning when Date said "Baton Pass", looks like it's now Ippo's turn to try and take the World Champion belt.

Definitely one of the best fights in the series so far. On par with Kimura Vs Mashiba and Ippo Vs Sendo. I legitimately had no idea who would win once he landed the corkscrew shot. I'm actually glad he didn't wind up dying. That would have been cliche as fuck and pointless, since everything was still super emotional.

So, I'm guessing Martinez will be Ippo's final opponent before Miyata

Gotta say Martinez is absolutely terrifying. I'd rather fight Takamura honestly. At least he has flaws; Martinez has none. The entire fight for Date was utterly hopeless.

Really hope Ippo gets to fight him before he gets too old and retires. Would love to see that.

One of my favorite episodes of the series. This was such an epic end to the fight. That one line (something like "When someone asks who was my strongest opponent, I'll say it was a samurai from a distant island nation") gave me chills, especially after it was followed by the "Damn it" and the "Goodbye". Just such an epic conclusion. The baton pass was also extremely touching. This show has outstanding fucking characters man. 6/5

The fight was brutal. It was hard watching Date getting so beat up.
Fortunately, he didn't receive any life threatening injuries.
And damn, I cried when Date passed on the baton to Ippo. The background music just made it worse :_:

Damn this was an awesome fight even when it was so 1 sided by Martinez. There is no rival around for him right now. Wondering if Ippo will be ready enough in about 2 or 3 years max before Martinez retires. I think he's pretty much around the age of Date, so I don't think boxers stay for much longer.
But yeah, I'm sure Ippo will get to fight him at some point of the series.
Date is now probably retiring. He's old enough and there's not enough time left for him to get so much better to give a better fight to Martinez. And there is no point in fighting again for the Japan title only. So his career is pretty much finished.

In another note, I would like to see Takamura vs Martinez in a fight. I know there is a huge gap (like 3 categories) btwn them and there is no way an official fight can take place, though. One of them should either weight up or lower down for it to happen. Or it could just be a scrimmage.
Higher weight fighters should be stronger than lower weighters so I think Takamura would win, we know he's a fkin beast and a clear candidate for the world title in the medium weights. He has all the tools.

Martinez is just too much. I don't think even Ippo can beat him.

Nonetheless, this fight was legendary, My jaw was on the floor after what Martinez did after Date's Cockscrew Blow.

Holy shit, I didn't expect Date to win against Martinez but Martinez not even having a scratch on him while defeating Date like some punching bag, Martinez is some next level monster.

Date passing it on to Ippo, one day Ippo has to fight that beast, can't wait to see that.

It was pretty sweet how Date was fighting for his wife and the baton pass so emotional, I was almost sweating. Great determination, but Ricardo is from another world. Iirc Morikawa once stated that Takamura was the strongest character, however, I don't think that he would beat Marinez pound for pound.
