Why are some people fans of some of the most disturbing characters in anime?

I've wondered this for a while. There are some people who have some truly disturbing sociopaths as their favourites e.g.

Johan Liebert - Monster - 1910
Shougo Makishima - Psycho-Pass - 1216
Ladd Russo - Baccano - 948
Claire Stanfield - Baccano - 2050
Izaya Orihara - Durarara - 8888!

Perhaps more disturbingly,

Rikako Ouryou - Psycho-Pass - 8!
Caster - Fate/Zero - 61!
Ryuunosuke Uryuu - Fate/Zero - 44!

In my sphere of work, this would be flagged up as potentially unbalanced! Especially if you believe that your personality is reflected through the people (fictional and non-fictional) you admire.

Reading too much into it or something to be concerned about?

It's just that these people make the anime more interesting. I personally would never want to meet Yuno Gasai IRL but I like how crazy she is.

Just because you find a certain character interesting in fiction doesn't mean you'd like them in real life.

That's it.

Because people love villains, its always been that way just look at darth vader. We have to play the good guys in real life, the villains allow us to live out and explore some of our darker sides of mankind safely.

On the context, there's nothing wrong in having Johan in your favs. He is more awesome than you can comprehend.

I find Ryuunosuke Uryuu interesting but I certainly wouldn't have him as a favourite! I think that is one that I cannot ever understand ...

Why would you have to be able to 'reflect your own personality' in a character to like them? o.O

Yanderes and other psychopathic character types are extremely eccentric, unpredictable and enjoyable to watch, just how does that mean you have to be able to relate to them to like them?

wut. You're reading too much. I have Ladd Russo in my favorites because he's a ton of fun to watch and his dialogue is just great. Not because I actually like people who are sociopaths.

I don't presume to be a psychiatrist but I remember learning about personality development and how the company you keep and the people you admire tend to be a reflection of one's personal beliefs. Psychology is, of course, not full proof. I am a fan of Gasai Yuno but I'm certainly not (I hope!) mentally unhinged. However, I was drawn to her character because of her intense love and dedication for Yuki more than her random fits of temperament.

I think what I actually mean is how people can be fans of characters who torture others?

I'm not being judgemental - just stimulating debate ...

They're fictional chars for Christ's sake it's not that we'd like people like these in real life :P
Johan is like the most interesting character ever in my opinion , he's number 1 at my list
Ladd Russo,Claire and Izaya are also among my favorites...griffith too and he's evil as fuck
I've always been a villain fan anyway, mainly because most protagonists are cliche and boring

They make media in general more interesting and fun to watch

Villains and anti heroes are more interesting than goody two shoes heroes. All the characters on my fav character list except Kaiji and Ezra are villains and anti heroes but that does not mean I am evil or misguided IRL.

Well, she's a comedic character in a comedy series. Those who favorite her will be the same kind of people who find the humour of that show appealing.

And since comedy is a very subjective genre, and so on...

Well since i have the magnificently fucked up character of Makshima shougo in my favorites i can say the reason hes there is cause he stole the show whenever he was on screen, he was unpredictable and clever, he was threatening and never had to raise his voice or act out to do so, and was just a blast to watch whenever on screen easilly making him psycho pass' strong point.

Also if i was a part of video game list or whatever id probably have the main antagonist tot he first 2 BB games hazama on my favorites cause he was a absolute joy to hate, he was hilarious in the darkest ways possible and always had some new way to infuriate the heroes and even some of the villains. Hes easily one of my favorite villains casuse of his on screen presence, the anime isnt really doing justice to his assholish level but they didnt ruin him at the least.

Basically villains can have more on screen presence and entertainment value than the heroes

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

There are many reasons to like a character except admiration.
Reasons for liking a character includes:

1. Admirable qualities (weighted higher in same sex characters)
2. Attractive qualities (especially obvious in opposite sex favorite characters)
3. Degree of relatedness (especially obvious in same sex favorite characters)
4. Curiosity, interest
5. Entertainment value
6. Villains generally exhibit a greater range of individuality, unlike the archetypical paragon "hero".
7. Hype

And my personal favorite:
Most of the MAL demographic is quite young, so the angstful and conflicting nature of persona maturity tends to come with unconscious rebellion in adolescence. It is not uncommon for people to seek individuality through tendency of destruction (conscious and unconscious). The liking of villains can therefore be seen as an indirect way to rebel against normality and expectations set by society. It can also be seen as the counter-intuitive cognitive dissonance against interpersonal loneliness.

The truth has been spoken.I like you xEmptiness !

I, just like them because, I like characters I can relate to. If there were no Aizens, Lights, or Johans then it would be much harder to connect with a series. I always root for the underdogs who give it their all like Kabuto, or Takano Miyo.

Makashima is awesome. I don't care for the method he chooses to employ to achieve his ends, but you can't argue with the fact that the world he is in is fucked up, and he's the only one who tries to do something about it.

I personal have Shougo Makishima in my favorites due to how interesting and thought provoking he ended up being. His was a very intriguing character that ended up being a shining example that humans aren't black and white. But despite him being in my favorites, there's still things I disagree with him about and especially actions that I'll never accept (those who have watched will know his most ruthless and disturbing one).

With the exception pf the PP chars that I dont know, everyone else is a fucking great character.
People dont like Caster Team because they kill children and women, but because of their views on the world and God and the chemistry between them, that no other Servant & Master ever had.

Ofc if I had the power to kill them I would do it.

I've Johan Liebert in my fav. There's nothing wrong with liking villains, as it was already said a good villain makes the story better. And even if they're mad, these sociopaths often have an unique background that makes them very interesting, even more than the typical nice heroe.
Plus, they can be fun, like the guy from Fate/Zero (Ryuunosuke I believe), people like fun characters.

Pretty much its all about this.
To glorify a hero, he/she must have a worthy adversary, the writer must spend lots of effort to make it believable. This including creating a background story of the villain and the reason why he/she was turned evil. This in turn might draws sympathy from the viewer, especially if the villain goal was actually derived from a 'good intentions' or a product of a greater evil, namely the corrupt system.
This would have the viewer questioning the grey areas and the thin line where evil is deemed necessary to keep the 'good' people from their own tendencies to become evil (especially the lawful good hero).

An example of this probably the magnificent bastard Char Aznable.

He and Lelouch are Byronic heroes. Their intentions, initially at least, were always for 'good' (up for interpretation I'm sure). I'm not sure they could be classed as sociopaths, certainly not by the ICD10 classification.

Furthermore, I'm talking about the really sadistic individuals who torture for pleasure etc. rather than villains per se (they are, usually, villains - agreed). I agree the latter is necessary for a good story but some characters have the former characteristics who are not particularly integral to the story, yet have favourites still. It causes an oddly raised eyebrow ...

Loving the debate. Interesting thoughts everyone.
