Well, almost everyone. Two people did survive.

The Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash occurred on 7 September 2011 at 16:02 local time, when a Yak-Service Yakovlev Yak-42 passenger aircraft, carrying the professional ice hockey team and coaching staff of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), crashed near Yaroslavl, Russia. The team was on its way to Minsk, Belarus, to start the 2011–12 KHL season.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lokomotiv_Yaroslavl_plane_crash

At first glance... I thought:

* Russian
* aviation
* air crash

I dunno. Russia's been having a bunch of these the past 10 years. But this one carried a sports team. D:

No, I don't mean the idea that sports players are more significant than ordinary passengers. I just happen to be a general sports fan. I don't even follow hockey. But still... the implications... I dunno man...

I'm as big of a sports fan as it gets, and this story is very disturbing...

For a professional team to be killed this way is a huge tragedy....I never think about things like this, but here in the U.S our NBA and MLB teams travel the whole country all season long.

Honestly, it's scary to picture this happening to my favorite team or a specific player.

Apparently the KHL (Kontinental Hockey League) is ranked as the strongest hockey league in Europe right now.

So in comparison this would be the equivalent to having an entire NHL team die.

DAMN....and I thought the league was a minor league or something to that effect.

And on the other hand, you can't very well split the team up into different flights either, that would just be chaotic, and a complete waste of money in 9.9 of 10 cases :/

The team is still going to compete in this years league. What they league is planning to do is to get all the other teams give volunteer 3 players to go and play for this team.

Since there's no freedom of speech in Russia, this will never leak out in the news report or anything.
But local people tell things through different resources on the internet. The plane crushed because if was forced to take off from a distance twice shorter than the usual. 1.5km instead of 3km. The reason is, as always, in Russia when a country leader like president, prime-minister or any other member of the government comes to visit, everyone must do anything in order to make the visit smooth and nice for the visitor. They even color asphalt in green to make it look like it's fool of grass, they switch ordinary people with agents so that there won't be any kind of disturbances, they stop the traffic, even stop emergency vehicles, and everything for the TZAR.
So in this case, half of the road for the takeoff was booked and guarded because of the visit. The game was supposed to be in Yaroslavl, but since there was president's visit in the city, they shifted the game to Minsk.
So the plane could not get enough height and crushed into the radar antenna, then lost control and fell. Every pilot knows that it's a risky business not getting enough space while lifting the plane off the ground. But hey, a usual irrelevant and useless visit of a president is much more important.

I can't believe that you discussing this disaster in the MAL forum.
Entire world knew this already, wow that's fast!

I lived in Yaroslavl (plain crushed near it) for a couple of years and made friends here. They all (after that crush) reacted like a crazy, especially when I troll them hard in the evening of that event. They want kill me, cut me and so on.

That hockey-team, Lohomotiv, means nothin in the world hockey. Those players were like a shit. And wow! They died and everyone crying. Why do they cry? I don't understand.

As you can see, my English is lame. But I'm just trying to share my common man opinion with you, not officially. News wouldnt say that, but a lot of russians would.

Just 2 month ago ship Bulgaria sank witn more than 100 people on the board - and there weren't any crazy cries as now.
There are a lot of interviews with people on radio & TV - people (not only fans) crying and complaining that they have lost the most precious thing in life, they blame president and premier etc.
but look. they are sad not only they lost good young guys, they are sad 'cos they lost show and action; their life is now empty without hockey victories of their precious team ; they don't know what to be proud of in their life, except achievements of other people. Poor Russia..

Lokomotiv*.

To remember or be sad about something, does that "something" has bepopular/best etc? No one is crying out loud here, sure not a huge loss to hockey, but it's still a loss to their families. You might say the players were shitty, but who cares, it changes something, they're less humans for not being good enough? I say fuck you.

I'm not a sports fan, despite the fact that i follow every winter/summer olympics. Crash was "meh" to me, but it's not "meh" to their families, and your mothers/fathers death won't be "meh" to you.

From your and your friends perspective, only talented people are to be treatened good, but when shitty/untalanted(tho the pinky of the player costs more then you will earn in your entire life) people die - the death has to be celebrated, because they were less of a human being and we're free of them, woohoo.
