Don't worry about late responses, I myself can barely find enough time to update my MAL due to university and work, haha. Seems like you also have a taste for numbers since you study Applied Math, I'm into my last year of Electrical Engineering so I'm down that road too somehow.

Well, I feel the same. No matter how bad the anime/manga actually is, I feel extremely bothered if I leave it unfinished. I always keep lying to myself that it will definetely get better (usually don't work though). In some exceptional cases, I even watch on fast foward to keep the ball rolling. I dunno, probably it has something to do with my personality, I just hate to leave anything incomplete; not just animes and such. At least I do a careful research before picking my stuff so I have a really solid idea of which animes will probably displease me, generally shameful moe-echii pandering. I'll be using your list as one of my reference for future choices so I can avoid some pitfalls and eventually pick some potential hidden gems that I'm not aware :)

Hey there. I stumbled across your profile by chance. I was so surprised to find someone who watched/read so much but still refuses to drop no matter what! Thank God I'm not the only weirdo to do that.

Also, that compatibility. Whoa. Classy taste.

That may be true, but I can still hit hit MAX LEVEL on MALGraph! :3

I'd say quite a bit. Light novel adaptation have certainly become more popular with the commercial success of notable works such as The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, so it's no surprise we've been seeing an influx of them each season.

From a critical (and by extension, a personal) standpoint, I'd say this trend has negatively impacted the average quality of titles produced. That's not to say that there aren't good light novels and good adaptations of them, but by in large most of them cater to a very niche audience in ways that I do not feel promotes effective storytelling and characterization.

That's my two cents on the matter. How about you?

Huh, that's really interesting since I'm actually on a similar road. I'm a college senior right now and I recently finished applying to grad schools, primarily for operations research/financial engineering programs. I did a bunch of graduate courses/research in algebraic number theory and geometry, and I'm sort of branching away into more of the moneyz side. I assume you majored in physics for undergrad?

Totally curious since I happen to be a math person myself. What particular field of applied math are you studying?

Hey, long time no talk! I've been fine lately - busy as ever but still enough time to watch and write about anime.

In terms of new anime, not a whole lot has caught my eye this season. I think 2013 spoiled me with all the good anime as there wasn't anything noteworthy that I watched (I guess Space Dandy and Sekai Seifuku could be fun).

On the other hand, I had the chance to check out Kaiji (as well as a bunch of other Fukumoto works) and really enjoyed the lot of them for their suspenseful gambles. Maria-sama ga Miteru was another series I ended up falling in love with as it's one of the better character-driven shoujos out there.

At this point in time, I wouldn't recommend watching the OVAs/ONA of Kyousougiga. The reason being that the first ONA was made more to test the concept out, and as a result it was nothing more than a super condensed version of the plot line in 30 minutes. So as a result, it came across as a "style over substance" product, and confused many people (myself included) as to what Kyousougiga was even about. The 5 episode version that came out in 2012 was more coherent, due to having more time for exposition, but it's now obsolete as the current version assembles the entire puzzle.

Basically, don't bother with the ONA or 2012 version. Enjoy the complete Kyousougiga experience from one of the best young directors in the industry.

Sounds promising. I'll likely wait for a batch to come out and watch it when I have the time. Looking forward to some classic space opera.

Also, I noticed you aren't watching Kyousougiga. Any chance of picking it up?

Yep, still playing and likely will be for the next while. Only at the second gym at the moment, but I'll have more Free! time after this weekend. :3

Suppose I'll pick up Kyoukai no Kanata for one of the popular series. Only others I think I'll watch will be Diamond no Ace, Arpeggio of Blue Steel and sequels (IS, Valvrave, Ippo, Monogatari carryover). Don't think I'll bother with Magi this time around, same with Freezing and Phi Brain.

I would watch that. Considering it's produced by ARMS, the fanservice should be at least decent, but oh well, I'd rather not pick up too much anymore.
Starisu Oct 6, 2013 2:13 PM
Certainly has been a while, but I've been good. Just working mostly and haven't been in the mood for watching anime too much. How are things on your end?

I am, however, hyped for Ippo S3. One of the few, if not the only thing I'll watch weekly this season.

Anything else you're looking forward to this season other than Ippo? It seems like this season might be pretty good, but then again I haven't even read single synopsis yet, just looked at some of the staffing behind a few things.
Don_Don_Kun Sep 25, 2013 10:22 AM
Just the two noitaminA shows (Samurai Flamenco, Galelei Donna), Kyoukai no Kanata, Kyousougiga, Kill la Kill and of course, Aikatsu 2! Since I don't have as much free time anymore, these look like the ones that would be the most promising.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
