Wolfs Rain is probably the most niche show I've seen it was by studio bone same studio behind Full Metal Alchemist. Wolfs Rain is sortof in some ways a more niche Ergo Proxy. Wolfs Rain like Ergo Proxy is set in an apocalypse, with humanity whilst more advance than they are now, but all huddled in the last decrepit cities. Like in Ergo the society is controlled by stuff nobles who are attempting to maintain there control in the final days. The central characters in Wolfs Rain are wolf's that can disguise themselves as Humans, and are being hunted by the nobles. Both series are full of interesting characters, Wolfs Rain generally doesn't fall into the moody intellectualism of Ergo - where it's constantly examining the characters. So Wolfs Rain plays out more generic, with clear telegraphed arcs running through the series and ova and key character moments can be done without a cross examination. |

I would say I don't know that much on obscure/niche anime, since I know there are people who know a lot more than me, however these days there are weirdos calling popular anime obscure so it makes it sound like I know more than I really do. I'm not sure what my favourite niche anime is, but I did like Ai City and Twilight Q. In fact, Ai City is amongst my favourite anime as I gave it an 8/10. |

I just finished the Detective Opera Milky Holmes franchise, a pretty obscure sub group of cgdct shows about girls being detectives, in this instance bumbling idiot ones. Pretty fun watch. Also going to give a shout out to Binchou-tan, Jubee-chan and the Lovely eyepatch, Potemayo and Koihime Musou as shows that I enjoyed a lot but never hear anyone mention. And from my forum pic, Ebichu Minds the House. |

I probably have seen more niche anime than others have seen anime in total. Most of them aren't very good, though. My recommendation is Strange Dawn (2000). Isekai before it was cool. The world is truly different and the protagonist search for a way home, as was the norm for isekai before it turned into a power fantasy. |

I have extremely approximate knowledge and interest in Showa era stuff. I'm far from an expert (I haven't even touched Black Jack or Doraemon in any form yet lol), but I want to see more of the earliest of the industry.... For specific series... The most obscure I like (that isn't like vtuber shorts or Movies/Ovas of bigger series) is Petite Princess Yucie, according to MAL popularity. It's a Gainax series, based off the Princess Maker games they make, and it's just dripping with lil references while still doing it's own thing. (..And honestly, The craziest part to me is Gainax made One of the more notable Raising Sim Games in the first place) |

I learned a lot about niche anime after I ran out of good mainstream anime to watch. Many of my favorites titles were well known in Japan, but not subbed until decades later. Makoto-chan and Minky Momo are a couple gems I watched in recent years. |

@Lucifrost True true, but that's why I said 'In any form". Honestly Most of my exposure with any Showa stuff has been modern adapations so far, but that's what made me curious in the first place. |

A good chunk of my 9's and 10's are pretty obscure, lots of OVAs a lot of people seemingly haven't seen. Apparently the least popular thing on my list is Nagisa no Brazilian, but that's just a music video I found funny. The most obscure "proper" anime that I've seen and liked was probably Hare Tokidoki Buta, it was a cute and simple kids film that I gave an 8 and I can't understand why it's rated so low. |

I don't fully understand what "niche" means. Is it something obscure and unpopular? Then yes, I think I am well knowledgeable. I've watched lots of stuff and I think there is no theme or topic I haven't already seen. I am too lazy to choose favorite, so I'll copy a user above: Wolf's Rain. Was my first anime ever and I still have warm memories about that. Also, I still consider its music the best. There is a countless ton of short videos, too. I've seen everything. A story of a living brick or a living trashbag. An electric pole fallen in love with human. A doggy poo trying to find its destination in the world. A dancing cloud of fart. A movie completely made of noodles. A kid with butt instead a head doing fortnite dances. By the way, has anyone ever watched Binchou-tan? https://myanimelist.net/anime/750/Binchou-tan |

Mushi-Uta It was one of the first few anime I watched (I got it from a random anime generator) and I just remember flipping LOVING this show and wishing there was more. Apparently according to some old MAL discussions (which I'm pretty sure aren't that reliable for information) there WAS apparently a season 2 announced but I don't know where the flip that went and it's already been like 18 years since the anime released so there probably isn't much hope for a 2nd season. BUT I did find out the light novel recently got a fan-translation like a few months ago and I'm super excited to read it!!! Honestly wish there were more fans to this random obscure show because I have literally NEVER heard anyone but me talk about it except me and I'm honestly really passionate about the show. And also if anyone is planning to watch it PLEASE I'M BEGGING, I WISH THIS SHOW HAD MORE THAN LIKE 7 FANS ;-; |

Off the top of my head: Chirin no Suzu Junk Head Sangokushi (1985) and sequel The 90s Sangokushi trilogy Junk Head Hidamari no Ki Ohoshi sama no Rail Raiyantsuuri no Uta Ushiro mo Shoumen Daare Glass no Usagi Future War 198X-nen The Silent Service Ore no Michi The Silent Service is amongst my favourites. As you can see almost all of them are movies and short series, I don't think I've watched that many shows that remain that obscure. Those are all I can remember right now |

I think most of the anime on my list is actually pretty niche, even the one i'm watching right now (Technically a Korean animation but it's listed on MAL so shhh!). Ok, it's maybe not the most obscure shit ever but still pretty unknown by the general anime watcher. I absolutely loved Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga (gave it a 10/10), it's pretty much a niche anime. |

I watch quite a few niche anime, and there are some niche anime that I consider to be my favorites, although most of them are from the 2020s. But if you look at the ones from the 1970s to the 2010s, there are "Battle Spirits: Shounen Gekiha Dan" (2009) and its sequel "Battle Spirits: Brave" (2010), a card game anime that I really love. The monsters in the story are super cool, the story is great and interesting. Most importantly, the soundtrack is amazing. I really love it. And another card game anime that I really love for the same reasons as above is "Cardfight!! Vanguard: Link Joker-hen" (2013), the best anime of the Cardfight!! Vanguard card game. "Kuuchuu Buranko" (2009) is another really good anime. Although the art is weird, it's an anime that makes you understand and realize mental illness very well. And "Kaijuu Girls Kuro: Ultra Kaijuu Gijinka Keikaku" (2018), an anime that I think is very niche and underrated. The story of a "group of villains" who plan to do "evil" things. Seeing this group reminds me of the Problem Solver 68 club from Blue Archive. It's a comedy anime that may be specific in that it makes jokes about Ultraman, and people probably don't like that monsters and aliens are turned into cute girls. |
