Now, that Isekai is a big thing in modern Anime. Are there series in which you'd take a fantasy-like character and put it in a city like setting?

One that I could think of and wanting it to be good was "Cop Craft". Boy, did that had a lot of potential. I love the mix of both with a bit of grittiness. I don't mind cute humor but it would be nice to have a balance of both.

The most famous example of this is The Devil is a Part-Timer.

"I was Isekai'd, but it turns out it was just another Japan in another dimension and the me from that dimension is still alive so I have to stay out of his sight because that's basically like doppelganger and I'll die if he sees me" would totally work as a light novel title though, right?:o

the entire population of Japan gets isekai'd into a fantasy land with unknown physical laws, minerals, fauna and flora, and have to survive with only knowledge of life on Earth. does this perhaps already exist? no of course not, it's too good to be true.

Oh jeez, I don't know. It would be wonderful if that made up 3/4 of all fantasy and sci-fi franchises.

Isekai Shokudou.

It's a fantasy, comedy, and food-based anime.

Well, aside from the ones people have already mentioned there's Gate.

Which is trash

But that's alright.

Because we're all trash deep inside

I would say that The Devil Is A Part Timer falls into the "Reverse Isekai" category. It's the only one that comes to my mind.

I can only remember three of them at the moment - Beelzebub, Hataraku Maou sama and Blood Lad. GATE is a combination of both regular and reverse isekai.

The best reverse isekai I have watched are not even anime, but 2 live action movies: Jumanji and The Purple rose of cairo.

“Nihonkoku Shoukan“ is a manga where entire Japan both people and land gets isekai’d to a fantasy world.

Anime-Planet late last year debuted the Reverse Isekai tag (among others), and here's what they have listed as that so far:

https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/tags/reverse-isekai
https://www.anime-planet.com/manga/tags/reverse-isekai

I'd also argue that the Magic Knight Rayearth OVA, also known simply as "Rayearth", ought to count, even though it's not on that list.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

Re:Creators - came to my mind first.

From newer stuff, Sasaki to Pii-chan is both Isekai and Reverse Isekai

I would count Demon Lord 2099 as Reverse isekai technically. It got the Fantasy being wakes up and has to adopt to Modern life aspect at least.

I'm a little surprised it's not a much more popular subgenre personally.
