We all started watching anime at some point [citation needed], your first experience with the medium probably wasn't CGDCT. How'd you discover it? Did you take to it immediately? Was there a turning point where you told yourself "Wait... am I a fan of this now?" Did you not want to be a fan and then it grabbed you? Was it a scene from a show, a specific character, facial expression?

There was a reddit comment I saw once regarding CGDCT, that "Yui saved my soul and Karen gave me happiness." I'd say that's pretty accurate, and I wish I could remember who to attribute it to.

I wasn't big on CGDCT, the first season of K-On didn't appeal to me even though I was in the high school band, I expected the second season to be more of the same. It just kept chugging along, not as enjoyable as Angel Beats or Ichiban Ushiro Daimou, and it occurred to me after episode 12, the summer festival (just look for yui eating corn) for me to sit back and say "...Wait... do I... like this?" Yui, especially, the rest of the season, won me over, and started the journey to find more cute girls doing cute things.

After you get the K-On bug, people will point you to Lucky Star (Tsukasa's adorable and anyone who says otherwise is a monster), and of course Hidamari Sketch, which honestly I thought was pretty boring. Hidamari Sketch though, pointed me to GA Art Design, which is still my favorite individual CGDCT show of all time (probably because it only got the one season). I took note of this series appearing being adapted from this "manga time kirara" thing, much like K-On.

At this point I *think* I've seen all of the kirara adaptations apart from Sakura Trick, and a not insignificant number of the kirara source manga titles added to the MAL database you might have come across were suggested by me, and if you find a series you like from that, know it's because Yui Hirasawa couldn't eat a corn cob without making a ridiculous face.

"But AP", you may be thinking, "Yui is your favorite character from cute girls doing cute things shows? Absolutely nothing other than your favorites list that you've posted has indicated that, and in fact, your very reply above includes a picture of a different CGDCT that most people would surmise [from 90% of your other posts, comments, and your profile picture] is actually your favorite."

I can't really explain that one, it just sort of happened. At the end of S1 Aya was my favorite, there are two moments that stick out from S2 that made me see the light (even though bullying Aya is still great) keeping in mind that it was probably easier to turn me than most given my general preference for cute blondes - the scene from 2x1 where best girl dresses as a detective and is gobsmacked to find Shino able to deduce that she is a fan of the union jack pattern (I don't know how anyone could figure that out)

http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/968/588/444.gif the "confession" and accompanying face from this scene in 2x4 gets me every time. After S2 ended I had to rewatch S1 with the new mindset, increased the score half a point.

I didn't really have much of a "journey", and there was certainly no turning point. I watched Lucky Star, my first CGDCT series, as much for the Haruhi jokes as anything else. I liked the stuff I watched from the start, but it was a long time before I started thinking of CGDCT as being an indication that I would be likely to enjoy a series.

I have been subconsciously watching CGDCTs ever since I started watching anime. Fortunately I track my completion dates in my anime list so I can somewhat accurately see my journey.

Nichijou was my first CGDCT and one of my first anime shows back in early 2013. I also somehow discovered Yuyushiki (which is my first CGDCT if you don't consider Nichijou to be one) whilst it was airing and thought it was one of the best things ever because it was just three girls fooling around. It pained me when I realised that I had to wait one week for one episode. I became a big slice of life fan and just binge-watched other shows in that genre, alongside romance shows, but kept an eye out for shows with a mostly female cast. Yuru Yuri, Lucky Star and K-On are amongst the few that I completed shortly after.

It was probably Kiniro Mosaic and then Non Non Biyori, whilst they were airing in late 2013, (and the influence of a great friend) where my interest in the CGDCT genre really skyrocketed. Discovering Okanagan's CGDCT thread was a treasure trove for me for finding cute girls doing cute things.

Then I became admin of this club a few months later in March 2014 in an attempt to try revive the club, which was pretty dead back then. See this screenshot for a throwback - a smug Yui picture, 190 members and Anise Punter still being a loyal CGDCT-er back then. Frankly I didn't really put much effort into spreading the word about this CGDCT club, but somehow we now have over 830 members and a more active club, which I'm pretty satisfied with.

Nowadays, I am exclusively watching CGDCTs and still have plenty to watch, but unfortunately my free time and interests have not been as strong compared to 2013 so my backlog is forever growing.

Great Stealth Momo avatar in that throwback screenshot A_P.

CGDCT was actually my first foray into anime with Lucky Star. I wanna say it was around late 2011 or early 2012. I had an aversion to anime for a long time before that due to not really having a good experience with shounen shows as a kid. Shows like pokemon and yugioh were insanely popular but I could just never get into them.

So it's near the end of the school year in 2011 that I start getting into MLP and over the following summer break I get way too into it. I start becoming a regular on a channel on this website called Synchtube which doesn't exist anymore but basically it was a place to watch Youtube videos in synchronization with others. Well it turns out that a lot of MLP fans are also fans of CGDCT anime, i know fellow club member nDroae fits into this category. Well they introduced me to Lucky Star and tho I was reluctant at first I end up binging the whole series and that was the beginning of the end for me.

From then on I've branched into other genres and watched and enjoyed lots of different types of anime. But for me my primary interest is always gonna be CGDCT. I was introduced to anime thru CGDCT and it continues to be my favourite genre. Like Classiick I am blessed to still have plenty of shows to watch so I don't foresee myself to stop watching anytime soon. As for any sort of reluctance to accepting that I actually like CGDCT, that was already covered for me when I was in the MLP fandom.

Ah, this thread is great :)

I wrote last year:

EDIT: photo from 1999

I've known that I liked "girly" things about as long as I can remember. I didn't have any macho (or wannabe macho) males in the family when I was growing up, and my mom taught me to bake and sew. My earliest memory is of being attracted to a girl when I was two years old, and around 1993 you might find me on the school playground helping the girls play My Little Pony.

More recently, in my late teens (around 2005) I started thinking about wanting to have a daughter, which theorists suggest is one of the needs that moe satiates. https://gaikokumaniakku.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/space-dandy-episode-5-moe-is-the-longing-for-fatherhood/ On the other hand, many shows can't be appreciated that way, because of fanservice or yuri. I also love CGDCTs about adult women, which are obviously just waifus.

My life as a media consumer mostly runs on very long delays - I saw most classic 80's action movies for the first time around 2006; Doctor Who (which I'd known about via my mom since the 90's) in 2012-2013; and I've been a fan of Star Trek (mainly the movies and TNG) since 1997, but I still haven't even seen half of the original series. With video games the backlog is the worst, partly because I've never owned a console.

Soon I want to put together a timeline for my profile, because my experience with anime is weird and backward. Many people watch the most when they're teenagers, but I'm watching the most now, at age 29. :P Sometimes I get to be like Elrond and tell the kids "I was there, when the original Toonami aired, at the turn of the century." But I only watched a handful of shows, and with 56k internet and (at the time) the belief that piracy was wrong, I didn't watch much anime for years after that - just whatever anime movies I found at the library. I "joined" the anime club in college in 2007 or 2008, but never went to their meetings where they were watching Code Geass. (I finally saw it this year and rated it 6. Wonder how it'd have turned out if I'd seen it back then.) I remember some girl on a The Sims forum talking about Lucky Star when it was coming out, and I made a mental note to check it out eventually. (I did, eight years later.)

I met an otaku girl in my final semester of college in 2009, and watched a few shows then, but none were CGDCT. She actually tried to introduce me to K-ON, but the clip she chose had Yui's fingers hurting from the guitar strings, and I thought it was a serious show about the struggles of being a musician, so I didn't watch it. In 2011 I dropped anime entirely, having burned out on garbage harems and being unwilling to invest time in any of the good stuff I'd been aware of for a decade or more but never seen - Evangelion, Gundam, Sailor Moon....

At that time a girl got me into Brony fandom. I've said before that Friendship is Magic basically is a CGDCT, with pony girls instead of humans.

In late 2014, I was watching silent horror films from the 1920's (cuz goffick) when I realized that I was sorely missing anime girls. The Super Best Friendcast got me to watch a clip of Kill la Kill, and I was amazed. I also had the thought that since Tenchi Muyo (which I saw in 2000 on Toonami) was the most inspirational fantasy media I'd ever seen, I should get back in and seriously watch anime.

By the way, Tenchi's Sasami must have been my first moe girl. https://myanimelist.net/character/5721/Sasami_Jurai_Masaki/pictures

So I gradually started watching CGDCT in 2015. If you count Madoka as one, then that was my first. Then I watched https://myanimelist.net/anime/11227/Rinne_no_Lagrange which is about as CGDCT as Xenoglossia, I guess (and similar in quality), and Plastic Neesan. But I still didn't realize CGDCT was a genre at that point, and didn't get much CGDCT value out of those shows.

Then a longtime online friend told me that Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star were two of her favorites, so I watched them. Azumanga Daioh is a virtually perfect show IMO. Would marry Nyamo-sensei and adopt Chiyo.

After hearing about Monster Musume on the Super Best Friendcast, I started watching it, and had so much anticipation for the spider-girl to show up that I looked up her seiyuu's other work and saw something called Girls und Panzer. Girls und Panzer is now pretty much my #2 favorite anime of all time after Nausicaa. I think that was the time when I started to become aware of the term CGDCT.

In August 2015 I still wasn't really paying attention to seasonal shows, but on the CR homepage I saw an episode called "We Made Friends with Fireflies" with a screenshot of Renge, and on that basis I watched Non Non Biyori and caught up on its then-airing second season. That's another all time favorite, particularly because of Repeat's encounters with not only fireflies, but also tadpole shrimp (which get a whole episode) and a cicada nymph, which may be the cutest thing I've ever seen in anime. Digibro says that aside from being pretty to look at, as a longtime fan of the genre he's seen everything in it done better before, and he may have a point.

Interestingly, looking back now, it seems that most of the CGDCT I've seen was only in the past year or so. Even after two years of watching only anime (and going from 12 to 70 days), I still consider my condition of having not seen important anime to be critical. I just finished Bebop last month. I certainly *could* watch only CGDCT, but then I'd run out within a year. :D

I deliberately paired up the links to this group and the Old School one in my sig, because of the general assumption that fans of one are against the other.

i've ALWAYS being drawn to female oriented anime, but as much as i know what my first ecchi series were... i NEVER thought about what my first CGDCT anime was @__@

now if we mean the traditional SOL about cute/sexy school girls with no male main character, then it was probably Tsuyokiss back in 2009 (which i never finished, due to losing what episode i was on lol)

but i didn't know the term back then, and i honestly can't remember how many other CGDCT i was watching back then since it was mostly harem i was drawn to, i know i started Saki in 2010 and didn't finish for the same reason of losing what episode i was on (although finished last year)

man.. never thought about it lol.. all i know is for the past few years ive been all over them

Hey, that was me! Still completely accurate n_n

I actually share your comment so much that it's funny, in my case I avoided moe series or found pretty meh the few ones I tried out (like Yuru Yuri), until reddit organized a K-On rewatch and I decided to join in. I found the first season to be enjoyable (7/10), but nothing else, then I went into the sequel... and idk when, but it clicked and I loved it so much, with episode 20 being one of my clear favorite anime episodes. Right after finishing that one I went to try other CGDCT series (with Kiniro Mosaic becoming my personal favorite some months after), and well, here I am!

In my case I didn't like Hidamari, and even less GA Art Design tho, so sorry for that mate q_q

I was also 7/10 on K-On season 1 (watched it last summer), so if I feel like you about the second season when I watch it that would be nice... and would mean more figurines to buy... although I think I already have a Mio in the mail in some eBay lot that hasn't arrived yet.

GA Art Design Class was also 7/10 for me. The OP and EDs were my favorite part.

I think the first show I watched that could be classified as CGDCT is Himouto! Umaru-chan. I started watching for the humour and Umaru being a little too relatable, but I didn't expect to get so invested in the cute antics between her and her friends. I started Yuru Yuri shortly after I started Himouto! Umaru-chan and it's gone forward from there.

Sorry for the delay about this post and I don't know if anyone really cares but I will update this post later (it's incomplete) and unlike most of you I'm pretty new to CGDCT and even the anime itself

Fortunately I added start date and end date for almost every anime I watched after joining MAL so I can be more accurate but when I'm thinking about it it's not that accurate especially the details... So here are the phases:

Phase 0 (~Sep 2016): Getting into anime: Thanks Death Note, you can't believe but I watched some of Ghibli films when I was a kid and didn't like them at all (and now I like them lol) and every 4-5 years TV broadcasted the entire of "Captain Tsubasa" and I didn't find it enjoyable either

Phase 1 (~Jun 2017): Enjoying a "silly" and "childish" SoL (Clannad first season):
In spring 2017 I started watching "Clannad" and though it isn't a CGDCT at all, I think it was a major point for realizing myself that I enjoy light series (before Clannad I only watched action packed series and funny thing is I didn't enjoy half of them). I only started Clannad because of the high score of After Story but the first season was (and is) also one of the best for me and I discovered I could enjoy an anime with no complicated plot and like being dark and etc.

Phase 2 (~Nov 2017): Watching seasonals because of discussions around and enjoying a "tier 6" CGDCT (Himouto Umaru-chan):
Attack on Titan Season 2 was the first anime I watched weekly when it was airing and honestly I really enjoyed watching it weekly rather than binging it and then decided to watch some of Summer 2017 (which back then I still didn't watched more than 50 MAL titles) and then I got addicted to weekly watching (and it was probably a mistake when I'm seeing it by now because now I don't have any interest for watching popular shows but I had an interest in that time and wasted it) and before Fall 2017 get started I saw that first season of Umaru-chan was very popular and the second season will get aired soon so I gave it a shot and really enjoyed it because of comedy and partially because of being cute.
Mikasa (AoT) was probably my first waifu but she wasn't "just" a cute girl and yeah I love Nagisa (Clannad) but like her because of personality rather than being just cute but Sylphin's cuteness really touched me and Sylphinford was the first girl I can think of her appearance took a major role for liking her so yeah that was probably one of the first times I watched (or enjoyed) cute moments of an anime
Also at the same time because many battle shounens were disappointing to me I started to watch (and like) cute and lighthearted series more but still wasn't aware of the "CGDCT" term. Only wached SoL and romcoms at that time...

Phase 3 (~Feb 2018): Acquaint with the CGDCT term and this club with continuing watching seasonals and this time not just popular shows (Mitsuboshi Colors):
Each season I watched more seasonal shows and so I watched less popular shows of each season then I discovered "Mitsuboshi Colors" in Winter 2018 and the first episode grabbed my attention so much I still haven't seen something like that but after 4 episodes I was really sad no one around me care about the show and the translator of Persian sub also dropped the series and wow I remember watched Digibro's video about winter 2018 shows and he said Mitsuboshi Colors has nothing new and it's just a weak version of Ichigo Mashimaro and then I just wanted to find someone or somewhere praise the show (cuz the score wasn't that low and I wanted to find who liking it) and I clicked the clubs tab in page of Mitsuboshi Colors and then found this club which the club picture was Mitsuboshi Colors and in the main page was also another pic (in that time I didn't knew every season those pics get changed) so I got really happy and that was the start but at first I didn't join but only tracked the club because still seemed something is weird about the whole of it and enjoying Mitsuboshi Colors. Also Yuru Camp and Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho were from that season which I'm not the biggest fan of these two so I hesitated to join...

Phase 3.5 (~Apr 2018): Read Yotsuba to! and it became my favorite manga of all time cuz of being only cute; From the first pages of manga I couldn't stand the cuteness of Yotsuba. Also when I saw it on CGDCT club relations and then decided to join the club

Phase 4 (May-Sep 2018): Getting to know what CGDCT exactly is and watched K-On!, Azumanga, Kemono Friends, Strike Witches, Love Live! and Madoka (if it counts) [Watched a CGDCT for every tier]:

Phase 5 (~2019): After watching Strike Witches and Love Live! decided to ignore idol and military shows and because of hatred of post-Madoka mahou shoujos I decided to not prioritize them for watching (which now I don't really understand the hate but whatever)

Phase 6 (~Nov 2019): Gave another chance to idol shows with a "more" serious one (Wake Up Girls), also my interest for watching mahou shoujo in general increased (Watched Ojamajo Doremi and Granbelm)

Phase 7 (now): I don't feel need to watch "the more popular" CGDCTs (GochiUsa, Aria, Kiniro Mosaic, Non Non Biyori, Hidamari Sketch, rest of Yuru Yuri and some others) and rather like to "discover" unpopular ones but I try to watch those ASAP

My taste is still evolving so for future I probably add another "phases"

I can't remember what originally started me on CGDGT, but It probably stemmed from a few airing series I watched when I first started watching anime.
Even though they aren't quite CGDCT, some of the first series I watched included Nozaki-kun (after realising Chiyo has the same seiyuu as Papi from Monmusu which was my first anime series), and Aokana (which wasn't really SoL but could be considered CGDCT.)

I think the first real CGDCT series I watched was New Game! when it was airing. I thought "oh game dev anime, cool" and I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere with the comedy and such. Followed that up with Urara Meirochou, Gochiusa, Nyanko Days and Gabriel Dropout and I've been hooked since.

Oh gee, I'm actually still quite late into the cute anime girls party roughly speaking:

I never really understood the appeal of cute anime girls. I thought it was boring, uninteressing, you get it. I was happy being just your average casual edgy/ecchi anime fan like Elfen Lied, Parasyte, Konokon, To-Love-RU while also being secretly a hentai connoisseur (all the hentai I've watched is still not up-to-date haha) I was dealing however with depression, but I had "friends" (atleast I thought back then those were my friends).

I was aware of Karen's AYAYA's and Nico's NICO NICO NII's, but still refused to watch those. Still, I was pretty much not convinced yet. At the time one of my best friends really is/was a tank nerd and he knew I every now and then watch anime and I had a huge crush on some young woman that was pretty well known for being a filthy weeb, so he introduced me to Girls & Panzer as an attempt for me also liking tanks. At the time, I did not really liked it, since I only watched one episode of it. I lied to him for liking it, but eventually watched Anne Happy♪ instead because of boredom. I thought it the synopsis would suit very much for me because I knew I was not happy at all. Now Anne Happy♪ however, well, it sure plays a good role that slowly turned the tides for me from hating cute anime girls into liking it. If it wasn't for Ren's sing-along of the TI-TI-TI-TIMO TIMO TIMO TIMOTHY rap, Ren's the one that always gets company of cute female animals, the fact that's my name's Tim, the fact I already liked kuudere anime girls because of Golden Darkness in To-Love Ru, Ren Ekoda (Anne Happy♪) kinda became one of the very first cute anime girls in CGDCT setting shows. The problem is; I was still in denial.

Gabriel DropOut started to air and I saw memes everywhere of the show. We don't bully Satania. Protect her! Don't bully. Eventually I gave it a go and I really liked it aswell. But I was still sort of in the denial phase of liking cute anime girls.

When the friendship with my so-called friends dragged on and they finally showed me their treu colors towards what they think about me, depression became even much worser and I somehow watched K-On! during summer 2017 because I needed some escapism and because of boredom (one of the reasons I watch anime you know). I was so jealous of Yui because she had so much better friends. Watching K-On! really was the final blow, because she gave me the moe diabetes! Moe moe kyun!~ The toxic friendships also finally ended & I became a friendsless moe blob (but a lot more happier). Fun things are fun indeed. Thank you, Yui Hirasawa (K-On!) aswell for being so cute!

Forward to 2018 I didn't had still a MAL account yet, but was slowly getting more into watching seasonals aswell. But as you know, in 2018 also the MALcapolypse happend for 3(?) months and I really wanted to make an account in making sure I don't forgetting all these well known CGDCT shows. Then after that I watched after K-On!; Bakukon!!, Kiniro Mosiac, Yuru Yuri, Hidamari Sketch, Blend S, picked up Girls & Panzer again (even it made me re-think of that one "friend" a little bit), GoshiUsa, KanColle, Mitsuboshi Colors, etc.

Now it's 2020 and I still a lot of CGDCT shows left to go. I mean; I'm kinda aware like let's say 1/4th of my Plan-To-Watch list is Cute Anime Girls. Heh. Now I need spare time to watch anime. :-P

I'm surprised TSF has less favorites than other girls but it's okay.
About the future I don't know what might happen as I am already a CGDCT fan but yeah also far from being a big fan. Well let's see

I would still highly recommend watching Aria, Kiniro Mosaic and Non Non Biyori at least, even if they are considered popular. GochiUsa you may like if you want cuteness and not much else. There's a chance it will be a bit meh on the first watch if you expect too much. I didn't really enjoy it until my second watch. These shows are all good at what they do. If you do watch some of the more unpopular ones out there first then eventually get round to these, it will be interesting to see your thoughts afterwards :)
It's not like I don't want to watch them and I want to say "look I'm so cool watching random anime no one cares about" no, it's just I'm not in a mood to watch them. But unpopular ones are easier (if not easy) to watch and don't need any "mood" for.

Also I'm so being used to seasonal watching I rarely watch older (I mean not seasonal) shows but about the GochiUsa case I watch it before season 3 come out again because of seasonals. *Edit: I forgot about Non Non Biyori season 3

Well, it's not as much of a journey, as it is a realization for me. Back in 2013, a little while after I'd just gotten into anime, I randomly stumbled across A-channel one day and decided to watch it. As I had just gotten into anime, I didn't really have any baselines for what I liked yet, but it was funny and I enjoyed it a fair amount. Over the summer I watched Lucky Star, and while not really getting any of the references, I still enjoyed it for the character interactions and jokes I did get. Note that this was at a point where I mostly watched ecchi and harems.

Fast forward a few months, and I had stumbled upon Non Non Biyori while it was airing, which at the time (and still today) was something quite unique to me. It was a really laid-back, fun and lighthearted show I could just watch whenever I wanted something feel-good. The energetic and relatable cast, Especially Renge and Hikage, really stuck out to me.

Next on the list was Kiniro Mosaic. After reading the synopsis, I was interested since it said some of the characters were from Britain, which I'm half british myself. Still not fully knowing what CGDCT was yet, I didn't know what to expect, but it was a good time. Karen's energy was one of the highlights for me.

As 2014 progressed, I continued occasionally watching CGDCT like Yuyushiki, Yuyu Yuri, Love Lab, Gochiusa and Minami-ke, having similar experiences to the previous ones I'd watched. At some point I also watched Love Live, which wasn't really my thing since idols were pretty weird to me back then. Had a nice summer since Barakamon and Nozaki-kun aired, both shows I couldn't wait for the next episodes for. Also watched Aiura one morning since I had an hour before school and I didn't want to start a long series.

Entering 2015. At this point, my taste had started to change a bit. I got more into action like Black Lagoon and Kiseijuu. Ecchi/harems went way down the priority list for me. I also watched a bit less CGDCT, since I was occupied with seasonals by then, except when the sequel to one of the CGDCT shows I'd seen was airing. As 2015 went by, I was watching less anime in general, think I burned out or something.

It wasn't before mid-2016 where I finally got back into CGDCT again, this time with Joshiraku. I had seen some MAD's about it on Youtube and it looked really funny and cute. I wasn't disappointed, and had a blast with it. The next anime season also had a CGDCT that stood out to me, which was New Game. I had seen workplace anime before, but not really any about making games, so I was intrigued. Had good fun with it, but at the time it wasn't anything incredible to me. 2016 was also a slow-ish year for me with anime, wasn't watching a lot. Even so, I was experimenting a bit with different shows, and watched an episode or two of Aria, which I put on hold for some time.

Winter 2017 arrived, and with it came a lot of motivation for me to get back into seasonals, since I had just watched the Little Witch Academia OVA, which I really liked. Seeing Gabriel Dropout on the lineup, it was a no-brainer that I ended up liking it since I had good success with similar shows in the past. Other big-hitters that season were Kemono Friends, which I ended up loving after being skeptic about it since I hadn't heard much good about it, but it just got better and better with each passing episode, and Dragon Maid, which was a really heart-warming and cute show.

Right after the winter season had ended, a big change happened. I had randomly decided to watch Monster, since I wanted to broaden my tastes a bit. Saying I was a fan would be a huge understatement, it ended up becoming my favourite anime at all time, and still is one of them today. I was so invested that I couldn't think of anything else until it was over and a while afterwards.

The next big CGDCT to enter the scene was K-on. Someone I knew on the forums was surprised I hadn't watched it yet and told me it was really good, so I took him up on it and watched s1, which hooked me with the fun cast and nice performances. At this point I was pretty confident in liking CGDCT shows, which was strengthened by the fact that a few months later, I ended up rewatching Minami-ke with a friend since he hadn't seen it yet. It was then I realized just how much I loved these kind of shows. It went from me appreciating them for what they were and just enjoying them, to me craving more and more, and noticing things about them that I'd previously overlooked or ignored. I continued my search for more in 2018 and 2019. Found Hidamari sketch, which was a wonderful surprise to me, Since I had watched a bunch of CGDCT in the past, I decided I wanted to go through as many of them as possible again, to renew my stances of them. And that's basically where I am today, still totally engrossed in them.

She also showed me the beginning of Monster and I still haven't continued it yet. That summer I wAtChEd DeAtH NoTe InSteaD (I will watch Monster but, like, not before Legend of the Galactic Heroes....)

you can't believe but I watched some of Ghibli films when I was a kid and didn't like them at all (and now I like them lol)

No, I can believe that. :D I was disappointed by the first Ghibli I saw, which was Princess Mononoke rented on a VHS tape. I was expecting it to be more fun with a happy ending, like a Disney movie (or the Nausicaa movie, hehe). As a child I was very much into Disney princess waifus, and when I was 7 I made a clay figurine of Esmeralda. Unlike them, San isn't designed with easy likeability as a priority. (Maybe Nausicaa [in the movie] is? Hmmm ;P) I've only seen it once since, at the theater last year, and was amused to find that my sympathies are now completely the opposite of the first time. Back then I was with the forest, but now I side with Lady Eboshi, what a woman. :D

Clannad first season is great, I was surprised on my rewatch by how well it held up. Also much better than Kanon, though Kanon gave us Akiko-san so it's great for that alone. I still haven't seen 2002 Kanon or the Clannad movie....

and yeah I love Nagisa (Clannad) but like her because of personality rather than being just cute

Moe personalities are just as vital as big eyes to the holistic cuteness appeal package (that critics can't stand). Anne-Happy is a whole franchise with Nagisa's flavor of moe at its core. It's like this: http://www.hrwiki.org/wiki/Li%27l_Brudder

I still haven't seen Umaru-chan. I'd watch a simulwatch if anyone wanted to host one on a weeknight

Mitsuboshi Colors >>> Ichigo Mashimaro. Very cool to hear that you first found the club via that show's Clubs tab. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I can remember how I found the club. I probably searched to see if one existed, after I first heard the CGDCT term applied to Girls und Panzer.

Kiniro Mosaic. Wasn't really sure what I was going into. I read the synopsis and went in expecting to see the girls going on tours in England and Japan or something like that, with things happening along the way. But of course, that didn't quite happen.

I still think it's bizarre that Karen's mom or someone hasn't taken them all to visit England. Houkago Tea Time gets to go there but the girls in the show about westabooing for England don't, WTF.

DenpaNyan said:
If the songs are good then the series itself should be good too, right?

I wouldn't say so :) One of my all time top 3 anime songs is from Gosick, which I watched over a year after discovering the song due to becoming a fan of the composer, and I thought the show was annoying and meh. Good early Aoi Yuuki loli voice and good ending, not much else going on, probably won't ever watch it again. Another of the top 3 is from Kado: The Right Answer, which I haven't even watched properly - I skipped through most of it at 3x speed. I avoided it while it was airing and people were raving over it, then at the end I heard that it was a monumental disappointment and everyone hated it. I laughed in vindication at having avoided it, then I checked it out while making sure not to waste time getting invested in the oh-so-intricately-plotted sci-fi conversations that got no payoff. Science!Ah My Goddess ancient alien observer waifu >>>>> all that. Bought the entire soundtrack from CDJapan for like $45 US but may never really watch the show LOL.

I'm not sure how infamous my dislike for YuruYuri season 2 is at this point, but I had the same experience with it as Minami-ke; fantastic first season, extremely disappointing sequel with annoying redundant humor and nothing new to offer, except the time travel episode which itself was overhyped by fans to the point of seemingly inevitable disappointment. Continuing past Minami-ke 2 was a mistake, maybe I'll like later YuruYuri more but I can wait to find out.

The opposite experience is the greatest, going from not really feeling a first season to loving later ones. That's how I did with GochiUsa and (to an extreme) Hidamari Sketch, but I still haven't rewatched those shows' first seasons.

I'd agree that in general there hasn't been much above average CGDCT coming out, and it's obviously not my own fatigue since at the same time I can watch an older show for the first time (Gochiusa 2, Love Live) and have it blow seasonals out of the water. Also for me there's been a lot that other people got much more out of than I did - Yuru Camp, Mitsuboshi Colors, Bocchi, Machikado Mazoku.

THAT'S ONE HELL OF A FIRST ANIME. And people say shows like MonMusu are bad for anime and turn people away ;P (Well I guess they also do turn people away, hehe)

@Timz0r So you're another who got into it in his late 20's. Not unheard of.
https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/91bf6a/i_really_dont_understand_why_people_like_cute/

My problem is I didn't explore anime and find out CGDCTT existed until then. I think I would have always liked CGDCT, but I can't prove that.

There's also this POV which sees it all through rose-colored glasses, though I think it has a point about many viewers:

Thanks for the recommendations though I rarely (or better say never) get any recommendation from anyone. The reason is I already have too much things to watch but I prioritize these anyway.

Also I like to watch Fushigi Mahou Fun Fun Pharmacy after completing Ojamajo Doremi (it would be around the next year I guess, and really interested in watching Aikatsu but don't know when and gdgd Fairies for memes and in general I like to check 00's CGDCTs first
*Edit: How could I forget about Kokoro Toshokan and okanagan's thread? Definitely one of my priorities...
*Edit 2: I forgot about Hakumei and Mikochi. I dropped it while it was airing and now don't remember about it much. I wasn't a fan of its direction (the same guy who is directing Hanako-kun for this season) and yuri-bait (?!) scenes if I remember correctly made me dropped it. Also treat all of my dropped anime the same; There is a little difference between an anime I dropped rating it even 2 and 5

And also today I played AMQ (https://animemusicquiz.com) with Comfy Camp guys and Joshiraku ED really hooked me.

The opposite experience is the greatest, going from not really feeling a first season to loving later ones. That's how I did with GochiUsa and (to an extreme) Hidamari Sketch, but I still haven't rewatched those shows' first seasons.
Yeah, Yama no Susume comes to my mind. Though for everyone S2 would be greater but for me S2 turned me off because S1 had no fanservice things but S2 was full of it and I couldn't handle the shift but S3 was really great

@nDroae My taste is somehow weird and unpredictable about liking a show or not but thanks for explanations I guess...

About PTW I don't want someone get upset cuz I didn't watch a show he/she recommended to me (because happened in the past) and other than that beside a random short anime I already knew/heard about the name someone give me (it's one of the things I'm confident about) and most people just giving me names without any explanations of why I should watch it so it doesn't motivate me to watch the show if I'm watching a thing at that time (and in 99% cases I'm watching stuff) and it makes other think I didn't care about the recommendation at all.

I rarely read manga but in some time I consider reading Hakumei & Mikochi.

@mhkr I'm not saying you'd necessarily like Anne-Happy - it's not generally a highly regarded CGDCT - but if you liked how Nagisa was always positive, hopeful, and ambitious despite her condition, on a basic level that is what Anne-Happy has, mainly with its main character, but also Botan with her (wildly over-the-top) gag of being constantly injured. Those two make the other "unfortunate" characters look fairly normal most of the time.

I used to dread getting recommendations because of the size of my PTW list (which I almost entirely keep offsite). It grew and grew for uh, two or three years? after I started watching a lot of anime, then plateaued off, and nowadays I hardly ever hear of a show that sounds like something I need to watch. I like it better this way. :D gdgd Fairies is one I've wanted to see for a long time, probably should have watched it before illivinni left, oops.

Hakumei & Mikochi manga is easily better than the show. It does have some yuri-bait, I guess.

I didn't want the fanservice in Yama no Susume either, given the art style. I don't mind fanservice of Kaede though.

Sorry to revive this topic, but I am kinda new in the CGDCT industry.
I guess my first real CGDCT was Sora Yori Mo Tooi Basho in 2018 and it was the best anime I ever saw in my life. Even watching shows like Nichijou, Chuunibyou, Suzumiya Haruhi and a bunch of ecchi before, none of those shows introduced me to the appeal of this genre like Sora Yori.

So I entered in this world and, after watching Hitori Bocchi and Love Live, I absolutely wanted to stay. This genre is so good and full of potential.

We are having fun with cute girls studying astronomy and geology this season! Dudes, I hate geology but I love seeing cute anime girls talking about that!

... sorry for this degeneracy display...

My point is that Cute Girls Doing Cute Things is magic. I initially kept track of this genre to find an experience similar to Sora Yori but I found a bunch of different experiences and that is wonderful!

I think that loving this kind of genre made me more into anime than I ever was and it is strange if I think that I initially got into anime because the original Hunter x Hunter of 2002... I keep liking action and fantasy stories but the anime industry is much wider than that and I never thought that I would think that I must watch K-On! before diying... (I will see it after finishing Clannad)

Continuing my journey, I went to animes like Endro, Hitori Bocchi, Zombieland Saga, Re: Stage, Machikado Mazoku and I found in those shows a relaxing atmospheres that helped me in my stressful days, even knowing some of those animes aren't that great on a critical aspect. I had fun with KyoAni shows that I didn't watch at the time it was released like Dragon Maid or Lucky Star.

I know I don't interact as much as possible here but I am loving this MAL club and it is always helping me to keep track of the CGDCT shows of every season. Thank you very much and that is it!

@Gyeferson This thread has been active recently, but regardless, don't worry about posting in old threads here - all the ones linked from the main page are intended for permanent use :) That's good to hear, I'm glad you've found the seasonal information useful!

I wouldn't even consider that "degeneracy" but maybe I'm the wrong one to ask ;P "Older people like to see cute young people" is just a fact of human nature that almost everyone accepts, at least speaking from my experience working a decade at a nursing home / retirement community. Though there is always that one guy who'll say something creepy. (In simulwatch chat it's usually me) Of course if it's not real life but cartoon characters, suddenly we have a problem

"Cute Girls Doing Cute Things is magic" reminds me that I keep forgetting to mention My Little Dashie, which I've never read, but remember seeing a trailer for back around 2012. I just looked it up and cringe-laughed at how close it is to the stereotype of CGDCT fans. :P
I've fallen into the same dull routine: Wake, work, sleep, repeat. I do have some moments of bliss, but the daily struggles I go through outweigh the small moments of joy I have. My Little Pony has helped, but it's still just another thing to give my hopes up on. Every time I see the show, or one of the ponies on a fan site, I recoil a bit at the bright colors, the joyful faces of the ponies, and the peaceful scenery of their world. It's so hard to look at that beautiful world, having it so close to my grasp; I reach out to touch its warm colors and bright, smiling faces of the ponies.

Only to be stopped by my computer screen.

How i got into this CGDCT is because Yuru Camp Season 2. So as you all know AoT Season 4 Part 1 hype is really really big, because of that i am starting to watch it. But after the anime end i don't know what to watch anymore. So i search about an airing winter 2021 anime and found Yuru Camp Season 2. I begin to watch the anime. Yuru Camp is giving me that relax and safe feeling, i can't stop smiling when i watch the anime. I realize that this is what i need in my life, just pure happiness. And just like that, i fall in love with this genre.
Hello everyone, i like Slice of Life and CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Thing) anime.

My first CGDCT Anime is "Madoka Magica" if that even counts one.
If not then I'm first and one of my favorites right now is "Nichijou", but I think it's less of a Cute-Girls-Doing-Cute-Things Anime and more of a Crazy-Girls-Doing-Crazy-Things Anime.

And after that, I seemed to enjoy these shows more than I thought, so I gave other shows a try like, Non Non Biyori, Chunnibyou, Dragon MaidMaid and Haganai(not sure if this counts).

Recently watched "Hibike! Euphonium" and it's probably one of the best musical Anime I've watched so far.

And yeah, that's pretty much it.

I think my first CGDCT anime was Non Non Biyori. (I dont remember well). I remember that it seemed strange to me to watch an anime in which girls and teenagers starred.

I watched it out of curiosity because I read good comments. I remember that when I watch the first episode I loved it (its currently my favorite anime). It was one of those anime that I never wanted to finish and I plan to watch it again later.

From that moment I started watching more CGDCT and SoL animes.

I think my first CGDCT was K-On! got in it because of my interest in music.

Then came Hidamari Sketch, Hinako Note Gochiusa, Anima Yell and so on.

There is also Cute Girls Doing not So Cute Things, such as

Girls und Panzer, Sora no Woto, Dolls Frontline, KanColle, High School Fleet, Frame Arms Gril, Beatless.

That combine action with cute girls. I like these as well. Does that count as a subgenre of CGDCT (CGDNSCT)

Then there is also harem anime that also have cute girls. Male Protagonist Enjoying Cute Girls Doing Cute Things (MPECGDCT) I like this too. Also a subgenre of sorts.

Than that can evolve into hentai...

My earliest was Elfen Lied which to the extend combines elements of all three of the above. However it is not a typical example of either.

I think it was 2009, animax started playing a show called azumanga daioh. it was a animax dub of course, but I found the lack of males or world ending stakes incredible refreshing. I also loved the comedy and the general happy atmosphere and realized thats what I had been searching for ever since watching that dragging slow heavy drama marimite a few years back. Just some very kawaii girls doing easy funny lighthearted daily activities, well, and a comedy. Esp how slow and dull marimite can be. I was hooked but there was barely any such content. They followed it up with K-on. And the rest is history.

Technically Marimite was the forst, but it wasnt a surety till Az. Then came kill me baby and kinmoza a few years later.

My intro to the genre was Azumanga Daioh & it remains one of my all-time favorite anime. I tried Strawberry Marshmallow & Lucky Star, but honestly neither appealed to me. K-on was probably the next one I enjoyed, but it was Yuru Camp that really made me more interested in exploring the genre. It’s still pretty hit or miss with me & I haven’t seen a number of the standard bearers (Non Non Biyori in particular). But some examples I enjoyed: Diary of our Days at The Breakwater • Anima Yell • Do It Yourself • Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu

Started off as a magical girl fan as a child. Cardcaptor Sakura planted the first seeds because it was a lot more slice-of-life oriented than sentai shows like Sailor Moon (which already had a substantial slice-of-life component). Then Madoka Magica happened, and magical girls got dominated by the Shadow the Hedgehog style edgy trend for at least the following decade. I feel like CGDCT swallowed up a lot of the lighter side of the magical girl fandom at that point, because many of those shows have similar themes without the magical part. I was seeing Love Live everywhere at cons, but wasn't sold on CGDCT yet due to negative word of mouth regarding their lack of plot and character progression. Eventually, I picked up School Idol Festival during the pandemic and was thinking, wait, these songs are actually pretty good! So I checked out the original Love Live and Sunshine, which were okay. I understood why they were such popular cosplays, at least. From Love Live, I also learned of the video game Blue Reflection: Second Light, which I enjoyed a lot since it felt like an intersection point between classic magical girl, Madoka-era magical girl, and CGDCT.

But it was Love Live Superstar that was my true entry point. I was astonished at how compelling Liella were as characters, and how much it spoke to my experiences as a singer-songwriter. For the longest time, I was one of those millennials that clung to Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura as the most iconic female-led anime, but Superstar turned to be even better in many respects. I got really obsessed with Kanon, a character I initially predicted would just be a generic nice girl lead, because her journey legit made me cry at how strong and confident she became at the end. And it made me think, if this is what CGDCT is doing these days, if they're giving girls so much meaningful character growth, what other amazing shows are out there? It seems like female-led shows have come a long way since the 2000s.

So far, I've watched Healer Girl and loved it. Also am partway through A Place Farther Than the Universe, and I can already see its influence on Superstar. So I'm happy to be on this journey and seeing how far the CGDCT sky goes.
