THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Firstly, I'll mention that I did watch some of the original anime. I liked this one better, slightly. The modern animation suits the fight scenes especially the light flares and space galaxy themes. I'm disappointed they swapped the classical music for their original OST which sounds rather forgettable and bland. However, the seiyuu changes are incredibly done well. Having Mamo voice Reinhard was a great choice as he's good at the royal cocky prince/king characters. Then, Suzuken as Yang who's great at a calm voice but he can also sound lazy which fits too. I liked Ume here as well and the rest which there are too many to mention. The anime is way too short to tell a story unfortunately so I'll hold back judgement until I finish the movie sequels. Oh, and I do like the art change. They do look like KnB ripoffs but it fits well.

I can't believe the season ended with such a cliffhanger, I can't wait for the sequel.

A bit of an anti-climax but seeing we were left with such an open ending I can only imagine a sequel in either a tv series or movies.

The overall revision of this fantastic franchise was quite interesting when I first heard it was going to be made.

I didn't think it would only have 12 episodes however, with this a lot of detail and detailed character development was cut out.

But I do still have to say that they've managed wonderfully to put at least parts of the original story in this this revision.

The original still wins by miles, but it certainly was nice to see this epic space opera breath new life into! All in all a pretty solid shortened re-visitation.

Excellent show, hopefully they do a 2nd season, or at least some films, any word on that yet?

I'll be going through all the original episodes to find out what happens regardless.

worst remaking ever, even kino was better than this shit. I watched the original and I must say it is a masterpiece, and this one is a let down pretty fast. How it even reach a 7 is a mystery that I need to check out, I feel bad to those first timers who were fed this shit.

The animation was alright but the character redesign was off-putting, I mean what's up with Obensteins hair, Rubinsky's bushy side burns, Reuenthal overall image, Julian's image, Schönkopf's hair and age, Reinhard's cape( where is it?).

The characters lacked that spunk, like Reinhard who had that princely charisma enjoyable to watch. This one was just another anime dry character who had little screen time. More focus was on Wenli and the alliance, it kinda pushed him as an MC and discarded the empire along with Reinhard's story. The 13th fleet air combat unit who were the life of the original series were introduced later, only to be pushed back.

The original anime didn't need a remake because it was powerful on its own, it is one of those that is impossible to remake. Horrible anime need a remake but not this one, they should've told another version of the war or an aftermath.

I won't be seeing them at the Amritsar starzone, thank you writer for ruining my show and masterpiece.

Never watched the original but I really enjoyed this anime. The conflict between the two factions is interesting and I enjoy both protagonists, especially Yang. It deserved more popularity. I hope we get a full adaptation, even if it takes long.

What a sad episode this was.... iit was so hard to watch it :(
Can't believe that millions of soldiers died because their superiors are dumb.

And why the hell there is no reaction from Earth? I mean government.
Wtf, i feel so bad about the Alliance now :(

I don't know their total losses but i still hope that they can turn things around, we still have 3 movies coming so i will be waiting for that!

It's a great anime but it's sad, i guess it shows the reality of war.

So much hype for Yang and his tactics, but none of it was any good for me. I expected something great, but it was just decent. This is especially true this episode.

Also, how the hell did the empire know the exact time and location of the supply unit and destroy it so easily? 30 million soliders could not defend them?

So basically 30 million soldiers couldn't win against the Empire...

Anyways, this was a good series, loved the character designs and the animation. If the original looked like this I would watch it in a heartbeat.

People who are only watching the remake, I urge you to watch the original instead of waiting for the next season. It's a lot more interesting and the events and characters feel like they have a lot more weight to them. In this version, everything just went over my head and I didn't care much for what was happening. Animation quality is great too, just a different style from this.

A shallow version of the beautiful OVA.

Not necessarily a bad Anime, but it borders on being nauseating and average.

Frederica's character does not make sense here, and the designs, again are bland.

I can't give this Anime a fine score, nor can I give it a bad one since it tried to achieve the ethos of the original.

While I do not expect the depth of the OVA, what Production I.G has done with this is certainly better than I expected. I am stuck ranking this at 7-8/10 with potential to grow if the rest of the series is done well. My actual score will be more concrete once I see how the rest of the adaption is handled, basically when the show starts to pick up steam. This first bit of the story was very slow paced in comparison to what happens next so it may not be a bad thing that it was sped up.

So far this is all cautious optimism, not quite sold but still impressed.

lol yup. it's just so hard to watch an old sci-fi anime when the visuals are nowhere near modern times. some exceptions ofc, when the plot/dialogue >>> visuals.

I guess it's been a long time since the first season aired. Did they really finish it with the take over of Iserlohn fortress? Watching this "13th" episode and suddenly we've moved in there.

Hell yeah lads, finally two of my favourite characters are introduced this episode: Oliver Poplan and Dusty Attenborough.

This was enjoyable. Patently worse in every way, except for art (excluding character designs) and animation, compared to the 1988 OVA, but still enjoyable. I guess it really is hard to fuck up masterpiece source material.

But if anything, DNT just proves that an adaption CAN be better than the source material, no matter how good that source material is. I've read most of the novels and I will say that the OVA is better than them.

If you enjoyed this anime, go watch the original, you will not regret it. Try to find the high quality laserdisc version if you can, also with Central-Anime subtitles. Stay away from HiDive/Dvd subtitles, they ruin a bunch of scenes with bad translations.

I don't know the original but after watching this i can certainly see why it has such a high rating here on MAL. The story of this is remarkable, it doesn't depend on high quality action porn but focus on the more political and strategic part which is a brilliant approach.
Too bad some elitists seem to shittalk this show, because it truly is amazing and opens the story for a much broader audience.

10/10 since it is exactly to my taste i just love animes with a focus on the strategy and poltiics. I was thinking about giving it a 9/10 but its more like a 9,5 and in this case i will go out of my way and just rate it with a 10 - it's underrated anyway.

As far as it went, this was better paced, better animated, better directed, better sounding and the battles were light years ahead of the original's "stationary ships firing 2 frames of laser beams until some of them explode", I went in expecting this to be rushed and now I have no idea why people think the original was much better. Sure, the old character designs were better, but so what? Do you watch LOGH because of character designs now? Someone plese enlighten me on what makes the original so vastly superior, because aside from some questionable decisions (Castrop was already a forgettable cartoonish antagonist in the original, you really didn't need to make him more over-the-top by having him punch anyone who disagrees with him. I'm also not sure why the Klopstock incident was cut off, it was important for introducing Braunschweig and Flegel) I'm having a hard time agreeing with people who bash on DNT and say the original is much better, this was really surprising. I'll give the movies a shot later with very high expectations, let's see how they handled the best parts of LOGH's first act.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

It's been a while since I've watched the first LOGH, but based on episode titles it looks like this remake is mostly matching its cadence with the original. I'm quite surprised by that and hope that this is a sign they plan to eventually retell the entire tale.

When I first heard of this remake, I was ecstatic. A new entry into one of the greatest, most comprehensive chronicles in anime. Then it began to sink in - that to live up to that expectation was going to be a colossal task far beyond reason. I'm sure for many fans of the original, New Thesis just couldn't cut it. As for me personally, this was exactly the spark I needed to revisit this classic with a fresh perspective. They truly assembled an all-star cast and the production quality has been truly commendable. It also seems they cut the narration out significantly in order to focus on more fanfare (that space battle with Poplin was so intense).

9/10 for the opening act. New Thesis has thus far proven that it doesn't have to lurk in the shadow of its predecessor. In the words of Yang, it doesn't have to look up at the same star.

Edit:
If this receives a complete adaptation and maintains this consistency, I'll probably raise every entry to a 10 just for solidarity.

So i thought at the beginning when the sister gets purchased as a wife or whatever, they became soldiers to save her.

Was i wrong? Thought he was gonna get a high rank and kill his sisters husband or whatever.

Yay, Dusty and Poplan! Love them boys!

Well, I loved it. Although, I gotta say that I liked it this much because I already love the original (which does a lot of things way better than this adaptation imo).
Everything looks so gorgeous... I'm getting used to the charas design tbh (although there are some that I really hate like Cazellnu's).
Voice acting was really good, Suwabe as Oberstein was probably my favorite. Mamo is not as good as Horikawa as Reinhard to me, but he did a good job.

A decent enough closing to the season, though I wondered about the order they have chosen for the events to unfold here.

This is for this season 1 of the remake:

LOGH (both original and this remake) is what I call interesting YET boring. I get it, you want to be smart and mature. I get it.

The biggest problem with this remake, along with the original, its is horrible pacing. THANK GOODNESS that there is an English dub for this remake, because my gosh, if I were to watch it reading subtitles with its horrible pacing, I would have dropped it by episode 5.

As for the battles, its not even close, this remake has much better visuals with all the machines and stuff, unlike the original in which the battles were meh.

Sometimes I feel like people enjoy LOGH to seem unique and elite, with its classical battle music, and wine, and "smart" characters. I cannot believe im gonna say this, but LOGH could use a little more shounen and a little less seinen.

And this anime also suffers from predictable aesthetic, meaning that the good-looking people are the smart one and good overall, while the ugly people are the dumb heartless ones.

Off to season 2

I liked it; while it’s not as good as the original, it’s still strong in its own right and I appreciate that it’s not just like the original adaptation. And it was also nice to see that Kitty participated in the development of the remake.

Enjoyed the episode although it's still slightly baffling and unclear why the Alliance high command wants to continue the offensive even when it's likely they'll lose almost all of the ships they deployed.

Hopefully there's at least a better reason in the next season compared to "we want to win the election" (like the Defence minister who voted against the invasion then using the loss as a coup to take-over, even though he was still part of the sitting government that was voting soooo...).

The dog fight scene was really awesome, and didn't know what was going to happen for a while there. Loved how dynamic the animation felt.

Also RIP the Chad Admiral who came in for a sudden last stand to save Yang's fleet 🕯🕯🕯

To be honest, I am a bit disappointed. If I were to watch this adaptation without previous knowledge from the ova, I don’t think I'd be as interested in the story. I still can't get used to the character designs, with this art style they look plastic to me. It's still a good anime, but not great.
