Four psychic teenagers—Mia Alice, Roll Kran, Lamba Nom and Pai Thunder—are brainwashed by the scientist Dr. Tarsan as pilots of his greatest experiment—the giant robot Dangaioh. But as their memories slowly return, these pilots use their abilities and Dangaioh to combat the tyranny of Captain Galimos and the Bunker Space Pirates.
Story: The story is pretty weak compare to the other anime I've seen. Toshihiro Hirano is not a good story maker. The weak point in the story is that Dangaioh failed to answer the question of when, why, and how. The four psychic protagonists were kidnapped by Tarsan and were nearly brainwashed into becoming psychic soldiers to be used by the Bankers. Dangaioh failed miserably to answer the question, how were the protagonists kidnapped, where exactly were the protagonists kidnapped, and specially how were their memories nearly erased. The Banker characters need to be explained more. We viewers
would not know why the Banker's leaders are terrorizing planets across the universe or destroying them. There has to be an explanation on the Banker's psychology, but it was never explained. Also, Gilberg and the Captain's extreme psychopathy is unexplained.
Art: The art is undeniably incredible. It is very realistic in terms of proportions and the face of each character is realistic too. The animation is amazing great in that there was almost no flaws in the cel drawings and the attack moves were unique in each episode except for psychic wave and beam.
Sound: Yes, the music is quite abysmal for its time period. The music in Dangaioh is outdated in the 1980's. I don't hear anything 80's in its soundtracks, openings, and closings. At least the last episode got recent with its opening and closing. The opening for Dangaioh sounds like some sci-fi music from the late 60s and early 70s.
I know Japan has knowledge about synthpop, spacesynth, and italo disco at the time. Its best if the producers use italo disco or even better, spacesynth for their soundtracks. It would give more sci-fi feeling to the anime.
Characters: There is a major lack of character development in Dangaioh. Also, we don't know the full background of each character in the anime. How do these characters live before the whole Banker incident. The mecha designs are incredibly good and sophisticated. I love the mecha designs.
Enjoyment: Its ok to watch if you want to pass time. I only watch Dangaioh for the artworks anyway and the mecha designs.
Overall: I find Dangaioh to be the best at art and mecha designs. Everything else seems to be either lacking or just horrible. Toshihiro Hirano is a legendary artist but a poor story designer and anime producer. I would watch Gunbuster if you want a better, but similar story to Dangaioh.
