Oy Vey! 10+ Jewish Characters in Anime!

The Jewish population in Japan may be tiny (IT'S UNDER 9000!), but there's a long history of exchange between Jewish and Japanese culture. Here's some historical background and a list of stand-out Jewish characters in anime, manga, and light novels.

One of the most interesting writers in anime, as well as one of my favorites.

So many fantastic works that have a lot to say about the nature of morality as well as the political nature of the world we live in. UN-GO especially I think is extremely on point about how important information is and how it can be manipulated by those in power. How Neo Ranga covers racial profiling and mass media sensationalism is another one that stands out to me.

His historical pieces are also some of my favorites in all of anime. FMA 03 and Concrete Revolutio are some ingenious pieces of metafiction that cover 1900s history in a very clever way while also including a lot of aspects that are still relevant now. In fact, I'd argue Concrete Revolutio is one of the most relevant anime in recent years due to the current political climate. Even the less relevant Ghost Slayers Ayashi, still has interesting things to say on the importance of fiction and Japan's relations with foreign cultures back in the 1800s.

Not everything with his name on it is a masterpiece, of course (Chaos Dragon, most of his old OVA work), but that doesn't take away from the incredible stuff he's done for anime as a medium. His works may be alienating and messy to others, but to me, I wouldn't have them any other way. I love stuff that's dense because those have high rewatch value for me.

I look forward to seeing some of his other works as well as his tokusatsu work in the future.

This is man is a fucking genius, his stories may not be the best at times but his concepts are very intriguing.

This guy did the script for FMA and Kamen Rider Blade. No wonder why these 2 different shows have similar ending.
