Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san

Every day, Naoto Hachiouji is teased relentlessly by Hayase Nagatoro, a first year student he meets one day in the library while working on his manga. After reading his story and seeing his awkward demeanor, she decides from that moment on to toy with him, even calling him "Senpai" in lieu of using his real name.

At first, Nagatoro's relentless antics are more bothersome than anything and leave him feeling embarrassed, as he is forced to cater to her whims. However, as they spend more time together, a strange sort of friendship develops between them, and Naoto finds that life with Nagatoro can even be fun. But one thing's for sure: his days will never be dull again.

I just finished binge-watching "Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro" and I'm still reeling from the experience! As a fan of rom-coms and slice-of-life anime, I was hooked from the very first episode. The show's premise, which revolves around the daily interactions between the soft-spoken Naoto Hachioji and the feisty Hayase Nagatoro, had me curious - and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint.

Nagatoro's constant teasing and bullying of Naoto had me laughing out loud. It's clear that beneath her tough exterior, she has a soft spot for him, and their dynamic is expertly woven throughout the series. The supporting cast is equally lovable, ... with characters like Gamo-chan and Yoshi adding to the show's humor and charm.

What I appreciated most about this anime is its subtle exploration of themes like vulnerability, empathy, and genuine human connection. Naoto's growth from a timid high school student to someone who's more confident and self-assured is truly heartwarming, and Nagatoro's character development is equally impressive.

The animation is vibrant and engaging, with expressive character designs that bring the cast to life. The soundtrack is catchy and complements the show's tone perfectly.

Overall, I'd give "Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro" Season 1 a solid 9/10. If you're looking for a lighthearted, feel-good anime with a dash of romance and humor, this is the show for you.

Mixed Feelings

Okay, let's get this out of the way: Nagatoro is maybe the second most annoying character I've ever seen in anime - second only to Yozora in "I don't have many friends" (and her friends are close behind). The first ten episodes I would have rated this a three and not moved on to the second seasons. The last two redeemed it - a *little*. But I don't like her. I mean, I *really* don't like her. I get that she has her own things going on and it might be the way she expresses affection, but I don't ... care. She's awful. I mean, really awful. And even though she gets a little better through the season, and "senpai" doesn't seem to mind so much, it doesn't change that she's awful.

That's the thing about this anime - the thing that makes it very much like a watered down version of "I don't have many friends" - it's the characters that made this anime what it is, and that's not a compliment. There's not a one in the bunch that I actually liked or had any sympathy for whatsoever. Literally not one. Nagatoro, as I mentioned, is annoying. Senpai is a mess. Nagatoro's friends are even worse than Nagatoro, and I think they got way too much screen time (what they did at the culture festival actively made me angry, and it's HARD for an anime character to do that to me). Even the club president is kind of a mess.

So, you might ask, Lycoping, if you hated this anime so much, why did you end up scoring it higher than a 3? Well, that's simple. It actually did make me laugh. The characters are awful, the plot (what little it had) simplistic and cliched, it's ecchi or at the least ecchi adjacent, but it did have some truly funny moments. They weren't enough to save it in my view, but they were enough to have allowed me to actually watch it through. So there's that.

Everything else is fine. The art is okay (well, in more ways than one, you'll see...), the sound is okay, the voice actors, well, voice acted their little hearts out, everything was fine technically - except when Nagatoro lost her fingers and her hands turned into stumps, but I guess that's just the art style. It's just the characters that really messed this up.

Mixed feelings. If you can get past Nagatoro's absolute awfulness and Senpai's utter lack of a spine, maybe you'll enjoy it. I didn't, really, but the laughter was enough to make me not entirely regret watching it.

Started this because a friend of mine that started Eva because of me said I should watch it (not because he thought it's good but because he thought it would be funny if I'd see it) so I felt that I kind of owe him one and decided to binge the entire season in a day (I'm sick so no school which means it was a perfect time to do it). This is definitely not my type of show at all but I was surprised to find ... out that it wasn't actually all that horrible in the end. It's a bit weird saying that when this is actually the lowest rating I've ever given to a season of tv, but it isn't *that* much worse than Demon Slayer's second season, and I bet that if you looked at this without having watched it you would've thought it's some shitty hentai, so yeah, the rating is still surprisingly positive in my book.

Will not do a long review on this as it obviously isn't the sort of show that should get one (who would read a Nagatoro yap anyway ☠️), plus I'm rushing to finish another review on letterboxd, but basically: the comedy was absurdist yet still grounded at the beginning, which made it genuinely funny to me, but it unfortunately developed into absurdism for its own sake without any thought put into the set pieces making it kind of irritating. Some episodes don't add anything to the show at all and can rightfully be called filler even with the show's vignette-like structure, it tries way too hard at making cringe-inducingly awkward scenes between the main characters (who are fairly annoying stereotypes and tropes), has infuriating side characters and a ton of cliches, yet still manages to be sweet enough and satisfactory in the end that I can't really hold a grudge towards it or anything like that. My biggest complaint would be that it's overlong (because it drags like crazy, the pacing is not the creators' forte), because otherwise it's exactly what this type of show is supposed to be like (even has some insane animation imo), I'm just not part of the demographic for it. Plus it's honestly inexplicable to me how this show managed to have more logical and less annoying comedy than Demon Slayer and even Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood because it realized the fact that if you make every joke revolving a character be that character screaming random shit in the most anime way possible, you're supposed to at least diversify how they do it depending on the character's personality, instead of having everybody scream in the exact same way. I was genuinely more annoyed at the comedy in those aforementioned shows than I was in this one, despite this being clearly much worse and much dumber overall. Context also helped, this type of comedy fitted this show's style much more than it does the others', in my opinion at least.

Anyway will go and hopefully finish one of the two procrastinated reviews I have for letterboxd. This was such a fucking exhausting day I'm never finishing a full season of an anime in a single again (except for tomorrow when I'll finish the second season of this show 🤭) jesus. Yeah, pretty damn bad (really bad most of the time) but at least it wasn't horrible like I expected it to be, so that's for sure a W. From what I heard from my friend (who hasn't finished the second season yet mind you) the second season isn't as cringe-worthy as this one so I still have my hopes up and my fingers crossed. Also completely unrelated but my mom has just finished the fourth season of Gilmore Girls and I'm not even gonna lie I'mma definitely watch that show as well at some point cause from what I've seen it's genuinely not as bad as I mistakenly thought it was. Anyhow that's the review bad season what did you except?
