A TV anime adaptation of the Boogiepop light novel series was announced on Saturday at the Dengeki Bunko 25th Anniversary stage event during Dengeki Game Festival. The anime adaptation, titled Boogiepop wa Warawanai, is scheduled to air in 2018.

The Boogiepop series, which has 21 volumes in print, is written by Kouhei Kadono and illustrated by Kouji Ogata. The 22nd volume of the series will go on sale on April 10. The series was previously adapted into a 12-episode TV anime produced in 2000 by studio Madhouse. That series was licensed in North America by Nozomi Entertainment as a DVD set in 2012.

A two-volume manga adaptation of the novel's first volume was serialized between 1999 and 2002. To commemorate the new anime adaptation, two new manga serializations based on the light novels will begin in Dengeki Daioh and Dengeki G's Comic magazines later this year.

North American publisher Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed both the original light novel and the first manga series in English.

Synopsis
There is an urban legend that tells of a shinigami that can release people from the pain they are suffering. This "Angel of Death" has a name–Boogiepop. And the legends are true. Boogiepop is real. When a rash of disappearances involving female students breaks out at Shinyo Academy, the police and faculty assume they just have a bunch of runaways on their hands. Yet some students know better. Something mysterious and foul is afoot. Is it Boogiepop or something even more sinister...? (Source: Seven Seas Entertainment)

I'm actually really excited for this, it looks dope. Although, it seems like Madhouse have recycled the artstyle from Sora yori mo Tooi Basho. (○゚ε゚○)

The most underrated and best written light novel of all time is finally getting a new anime ! Wish it matained the creepy and dark art style of the original thought. At least the guy who did the devilman crybaby soundtrack is gonna work on this.

I haven't signed in since 2014, I been lurking mainly. I just HAD to sign in to comment!

This reminds me that I haven't finished the original series, which I will do because it was AWESOME, I'm SO happy that they're remaking it! I'm curious to see how this interpretation will turn out in the end!

True.
But I chose to be open-minded.

Sometimes Madhouse tries too hard to make it popular imo. And Kirima Nagi's new design really sucks.

They did the first Boogiepop anime, they know very well what they did good there and will probably try to replicate it here.

HYPE! First Kino and now this. Judging by its PV It's not going to have the same mysterious atmosphere I liked so much. I wish another studio had done it. Sometimes Madhouse tries too hard to make it popular imo. And Kirima Nagi's new design really sucks.

Not sure how I feel about this without that ethereal atmosphere Boogiepop Phantom had before which made it really creepy feeling.

Why is Shingo Natsume the fucking coolest new director in the cut right now. If he continues like this I think we are gonna be talking about him like he’s one of the greats in a decade or two.

Oooh, Boogiepop... This might be a good thing, since I keep hearing that the original anime is not very faithful to the source material.

Isn't this the dark urban fantasy similar to Kara no Kyoukai?
If so, I'm in.

What a coincidence, I also thought about reviving Lain because of this Boogiepop announcement - they both have that similar early 2000s dark atmosphere, and Lain is also voiced by Kaori Shimizu (Signum).

Btw, saw your profile; 2000s kid who has Gunbuster and Macross: DYRL in his favorites, one rarely sees that.

Based on the trailer, it doesn't seem like the series will retain the originals surreal, Eraserhead esque atmosphere. Oh well.

That is all because Studios want to look more polished and clean.
An unpolished look can give more atmosphere in the right hand.
Just look at both the old and new Kino's journey for example.
The old one is far less polished but has atmosphere partly because of that.

Same can be said about gritty. It is to hard to do now due to animation being so clean.

Holy fuck, never expected this. Solid staff all around, and although it won't retain the surreal atmosphere that I loved, I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully the new soundtrack by Kensuke Ushio lives up to the fantastic OST from Phantom.

If Shikao Suga comes back to perform the opening then I couldn't ask for more.
