The story follows Hiroshi Kuzumi, a 16-year-old student who has just moved to the seemingly serene village of Jogamachi. Nestled in the mountains far away from the city, the village is divided by a river that separates old Jogamachi from new Jogamachi. Young Hiroshi soon discovers that the village is ancient as well as mysterious traditions and customs have been kept alive over the ages. Although a bit bewildered by the new environment, Hiroshi begins to settle into his new life. While he has never been the type to win any popularity contests, he quickly earns the affection of his classmates. That is with the exception of aloof class president, Nemuru Kushinada, whose only words to Hiroshi are a warning to stay away from old part of town. It is there that terror and mystery await him.

As a fellow fan of Ryukishi07’s works (Higurashi no Naku koro Ni, Umineko no Naku Koro Ni), I was quite excited for the release Ookami Kakushi. I thought that I was in for another psychological thriller and exciting mystery, but unfortunately, Ookami Kakushi didn’t turn out to be as such. I admit, I went into the show with the wrong kind of expectations, and my review is a reflection of that. However, I still think I have some good points to offer.

The original premise of the show sounded interesting enough, but here is why the story was poorly executed:

Probably the biggest reason Ookami Kakushi is rated rather on the low side. Now, I'm not going to say I know everything there is to know about the creator or the show or anime in general. Going from what people have been saying, this is nothing but a cheap knockoff of Higurashi and it really sucks compared to it. What the heck yo. Like legit. What the heck. I watched it, despite trying not to, with prejudice. Somewhere in my head, I compared Ookami Kakushi to Higurashi, and it really just can't match up at all. Does that make this a bad show? Ookami Kakushi was written by Ryukishi07, best known for Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. That should pretty much tell you what to expect, since Ookami Kakushi is an obvious, shameless clone of its considerably superior ancestor.

The premise goes as follows. Hiroshi Kuzumi, an unlikeable, spineless milquetoast, moves to a town known as Jouga with his occult fanatic father and annoying Tsundere sister, who is in a wheelchair for reasons that are never given passing explanation in the series. As they are moving in, Hiroshi meets the love interest, Isuzu Tsumuhana, who is supposed to be this series' Rena Ryuuguu despite having none of the likeability read more

I figured i'd give this a short review. Mainly because, I was very skeptical of checking this anime out because it has god awful reviews.
Goes to show, I really can't trust weeaboos to have real opinions.

Anyone who outright hates this anime, is a diehard WTC/Umineko fan. They expected a psychological thriller with some brutal gore. That really isn't what this anime was about, and thus...let the hate flow.

Story: It's average. I had it pinned pretty quickly. It does start out slow at first, but it picks up in the later half. I can't say I was ever BORED though, it kept me interested or else read more

Anime: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
With Ookami Kakushi, think of a much softer, less violent version of Higurashi. Except, what we seem to be dealing with isn't a festial revolving around a god of death, but a wolf god. There are enough changes, for it to be it's own story, yet simular enough to ask, did the creator get some ideas from Higurashi? That includes some of the sound effects.

a kid comes to live in a rural town and is greeted by his class with open arms.
also the town is f---ed up but no biggie.
supernatural stuff happens
people are "mysteriously" disappearing every episode
MC should have GTFO'd out of there ASAP

Anime: Shiki
Both series deal with isolated towns that have a different species that's hostile to humans. There's horror and people dying, but the endings are pretty good.

Anime: Shinreigari: Ghost Hound
Ghost Hound is Ookami Kakushi done correctly. It has richer set of characters and maintains a stronger level of suspense throughout the series.

If you enjoyed Ookami Kakushi's occult themes and suspense then you should watch Ghost Hound. If you watch Ookami Kakushi for the cute girl cutting people with sythes you might be a little disappointed in Ghost Hound. It has predominantly male protagonists.

If you love Ghost Hound... wait a couple of weeks and then watch Ghost Hound again. Ookami Kakushi's predicable story line and flat characters will not hold your interest for long.

Anime: Rozen Maiden
In both Rozen Maiden and Ookami Kakushi, there are mostly girl characters with one male who is the main character. In both, the characters are designed by the same people, PEACH-PIT. Both have a magical-type-ish plot with epic battle scenes.
