Ookamikakushi

I figured i'd give this a short review. Mainly because, I was very skeptical of checking this anime out because it has god awful reviews.
Goes to show, I really can't trust weeaboos to have real opinions.

Anyone who outright hates this anime, is a diehard WTC/Umineko fan. They expected a psychological thriller with some brutal gore. That really isn't what this anime was about, and thus...let the hate flow.

Story: It's average. I had it pinned pretty quickly. It does start out slow at first, but it picks up in the later half. I can't say I was ever BORED though, it kept me interested or else ... I would have just dropped it. If you take it for what it is, you'll probably like it.
EDIT: By the way, this is definitely half Slice-of-life. Not your thing? Don't bother. You'll be bored. Not the animes fault, just a preference conflict.

Music: I really enjoyed some of the soundtracks in this anime. A lot of anime loses emotion because of a lacking OST, but this anime doesn't suffer that problem. I could accept ANY insult towards this anime, except a shot at the OST. It was well done, that's a fact.

Art: This is another one that struck me when I read reviews. People knocking the art. That surprised the hell out of me. I don't know what trashy streaming site people watched this anime on, but the 720p BD episodes I have look pretty fantastic. The art is smooth, the effects aren't lacking, and there's a decent amount of detail. For the time of release, the art is very solid.

Characters: I don't have much to say on this one. Every character has a role, and they stick to it. Not a whole lot of "change" goes on, except for one character I suppose. For a short 11 (technically 12) episode anime, I don't expect much more. Characters don't need to go through immense change to be well done.

Overall: A decent watch. I don't feel I wasted my time watching through the anime.

If you take nothing else from this review, just go with this:

F*** the haters, if you think you'd be interested in this anime, watch it and judge for yourself. Don't let a bunch of bias idiots dumping on this anime deter you, you may just enjoy it.

Ok, I guess I can start off by saying yes I have not finished the series, but that is pretty obvious because nobody knows when this anime is going to end, not even MAL. I can say that I am up to date as of now, with 5 episodes watched under my belt, so to speak of course. Ok enough with the formalities and lets cut to the chase, shall we.

Ookami Kakushi, is as we all know a new anime for the 2009-2010 Winter Season of anime. A season that has very much been a disappointment to most of us that follow anime, season to ... season, like I do. This season was basically the season of ecchi anime, so yeah if you are an ecchi fan go check those out cause I am sure you will like em. I myself am not so much an ecchi fan. Ookami Kakushi has been one of the black sheep of the season, and not in a bad way. This anime is practically one of the only anime worth watching of the season, unless you are an ecchi fan.

The story line is very interesting, it does fall on the same lines as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, with a slight twist. I won't go into detail as to what that twist is, because I am one of those people that would not like it if someone spoiled the show for me, so why make myself a hypocrite and do the same to you, the readers. All I can tell you is you will not be disappointed if you liked Higurashi. There are so far a few twists in the story, but hey what would a psychological anime be without twists. If you are wondering yes there is blood and yes there is murder, that wasn't much of a spoiler was it? I hope not.

Ah the Art, what can I say about the art? Well its Artsy, lol. Just kidding. Ookami Kakushi does have a very clean, very modern art style. Peach-Pit, the mangaka duo, did a lovely job on this anime, with the original character design. And for those When they Cry fans, this will be a familiar name, I hope. Ryukishi07 (Don't know if that is his real name, it is just what MAL has), the original creator of Ookami Kakushi and When they Cry series, also did a lovely job. So if you have not already noticed yes Ookami Kakushi does have the same or at least very similar art style to, When they Cry.

Now my favorite part, the sound. A lot of animes have fallen short in this category but you know what Ookami doesn't. The opening is lovely, I do have to say it is not as dark as it probably should be for an anime of this caliber. To those who have tried the VN, nope it is not the same opening, sorry. I have heard the VN opening and I have to say that it is way better than the anime opening, although the anime opening is not bad. Ok to stop my rambling I will move onto the ending. The ending is also good, although it is a little to upbeat. The ending has lovely flow and the singer has a great voice, just don't think it was a good choice for this particular anime, the background music is just a little to techno like in my opinion. And to my favorite sound part, the well I am not sure what you would call it, it is just the sound and music you hear throughout the anime at certain parts. The music during the murder scenes is to die for. Very dark, very awesome. Can't wait for the OST to come out, it is just that good.

Now see this is where they somewhat lost me, the character. The character while somewhat entertaining, are also somewhat boring. An annoying girl clinging on to the main guy, yeah that is a little cliche. There are some very weird moments with the characters, like there are some flashes of what seems to be yaoi, but not exactly. I as a yaoi fan, should know when I see it, but it just seems weird to me. See I can't really even explain the characters with out any spoilers, so I cave and gave you a little hint of it.

This is a very enjoyable anime. Obviously you're enjoyment level depends on you're personal preference in genre. If you are a psychological, Mystery anime fan you will love this. If you are a mecha fan, well sorry this is not for you. If you are a romance in a dark way anime fan, this is also for you.

Overall I give this anime a 10/10. In my opinion there is not much you could not like about Ookami Kakushi.

so the story goes on with a boy who start to live with his father in jouga city his sis also comes with him.he attends to the school there but something is wrong with that school kinda creepy also the town whatever.there is a urban legend that says if u see a red firefly u would get urself in missfortune there is also another legends like that.but one night he saws a girl who kills a women then everything starts there...

story: is somewhat interesting becouse of ookami (urban legend)

Being freak out when you first arrive in town where everyone sooooooooo opening and friendly and welcome you. And i was totally freak out with just about everything in Ookami Kakushi, but was surprise that how the twist event turn out.

Though i no fan of Higurashi or Umineko, but i sure fan will enjoy suspend plus moe cuteness on this anime.

From the start of episode 1 everything was a warm and too friendly welcome for me on start, especially the character (design by Peach-Pit) has a really really big bright eye on its female character was totally freak me out at first. It really reminds ... me of Vampire Knights manga!

The plays of the story start by blocking you, as a viewer, that everything was nice and friendly under the bright light until the shadow of suspend befall on that bright light. This formula has been reused again and again for a least 4, 5 episode until on episode 6, 7 kicks in the real plot. And fortunately, that formula works. And it keep let me guessing what the hell is happening, and why the hell everyone is just too friendly to Hiroshi (the main character). Though the formula is not a master formula, like 20th Century Boys, which has one of the greatest tale of suspend i ever love and hate, but a least this formula here is friendly and not so hateful.

Recently the anime i see that the director try so hard just to give a better basic view on how this anime plays out, for example introducing the character. Some director want introducing them all at 1 episode. But Ookami did not suffer that weak point. This is a suspend anime which things has to be introduce 1 by 1.

Character here, especially female character, has freaking large eye. Is not the design is bad is just really annoy me much that i couldn't stop thinking that i dropping this Ookami and many moe moe---Kyun! It may annoy me (or maybe you) at first, but thankfully with the the suspend goes, the chemical reaction on this 2 keep this anime to be enjoyable.

The biggest weak point here was the BGM. There music on this anime use it in the wrong place and the wrong time. Give me a really weird impression on how the situation is play out.

Clockwise, the quality of the graphic was nothing to compared to other, as they are being decent in the level of anime art. Though it have some decent 3D, the animation was fair enough being not so bad on it. Movement and fighting was fine on it.

Though the enjoyment of anime was very annoying at first but later being a little bit interesting. It was a least a decent anime to enjoy, a type of anime you won't find it stupid, but it might be the anime you could have forget as times goes.

And in the end, Ookami is the least friendly version of 20th Century Boys, but is the anime you either like or forgot.

Story:
It was confusing at first, but then closer to the end it was very easy to understand. It was an amazing story.

Art:
The art is just beatiful. So detailed, and the shading is great.

Sound:
Very beautiful. Music, voice actors, and sound effects were all perfect.

Characters:
... Most of them are very good. I only took off one point because of one character. The rest are great.

I really loved this anime, and I think you should watch it.

To start, this anime lost points for me mainly because of character development, plot gaps, and the first three episodes.

The first quarter of the anime is quite hard to watch, it isn't interesting and it seems kind of generic except for a couple things that don't get a whole lot of attention until later. At the fourth episode, things really start to pick up and start moving quite fast and WILL keep you intrigued. It has been a while since I have had the pleasure of viewing an anime that made me struggle to stop watching before it got too late at night.

The character ... development is mediocre. The characters are enjoyable but only one is unique and stands out and she is a side character. The main character's sister, mana, is the only character that I believe was unique and stood out. Another side character, at least she is in the first half, she becomes more important in the second half, is Nemuru. Nemuru has the typical tsundere attitude making her not necessarily unique however she is not the love interest which makes her a little more interesting, which brings me to the next part of the review.

The primary heroine in the anime is introduced in the beginning of the anime and immediately falls in love with our main character. It has been seen many times in anime, the main character moves to a new town and a girl he only just met is in love with him. This is explained better around episode eight. The main reason why the anime lost a few points in terms of plot development and characters is because while the mystery part of the story really kept me intrigued, the romance part lacks quite a bit. Now I didn't watch the anime with intentions of viewing a romance however it is obviously hinted at due to our heroine clinging to our main character. The main character denies her affections in the beginning as seen in every other similar anime and like every other similar situation, he eventually warms up to her, however, the issue is that there wasn't much of a smooth transition. The main character goes from being that reluctant friend to caring for her on an almost romantic level in an instant. And I mean the transition took place over the course of fifteen minutes and we don't see him think over his thoughts, it just happens and because of this, the writer fails to evoke emotion with his characters. Now this may have not been the goal however I saw it as a good opportunity to do so. Later in the story, the writer does a much better job of creating emotion with his characters.

Those were the main reasons it lost points. The other reasons were because of slight discontinuity such as disappearing characters that the main character is concerned about and looks for answers but then his attention is diverted and you practically forget that character was part of the story. Kind of like Ino in the Naruto series.

Now, let me go into why it is a good series and why I gave it an 8 instead of the average 6 or 7. In regards to other reviews, I have not seen any other works by this writer so I do not have anything to compare it to yet. I believe that what this anime brings to the table is suspense, and intensity. The writer doesn't hold back and creates an emotion of suspense and really keeps the watcher wanting to continue. The plot thickens with every episode and while it starts slow, it just gets better and better the farther you get. For twelve episodes, it is definitely worth the watch. Most of you who are looking for the action and suspense will enjoy it. If you are looking for a action/romance, this is not it. There isn't enough romance for this to be considered a romance genre. Yes there are romantic elements but it is mostly one-sided and without spoiling anything, the conversation that will give you the answers to the questions you will form throughout the anime will reveal that you were tricked into thinking those romance elements were actually romance. It is worth watching like I said, but watch with the intention of watching an action suspense and mystery genre and you will love it!

Honestly, I don't know why this anime has such a bad score because it isn't a bad experience at all.

This show has a good story, good characters, good animation and is a great experience for those who are looking for a short and fun psycological horror anime.

In a first glance it's possible to see some similarities with Ryukishi07's other works like Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. But as the series progresses, it shows that it has it's own ideas and themes that will be developed further and is in no way a shameless clone of it's ancestor.

The animation is mid most of the time, and ... it doesn't quite reflect the seiyuu's emotions very well in some cases, but is really well done when it needs to be.

Personaly, I liked how the mystery unfolds and the pacing is good, although the explanation of what was happening has kinda of rushed and let me confused for the final moments.

I'll start off by saying one thing : If you think it's one of those cutesy animes with cute little chibi characters with the whole sweet lolita theme, you're wrong. The beginning might have that whole ''kawaii!!!'' theme, but trust me, it gets more to the dark side. The plot is really great. At first, you'll have a hard time understanding what it's all about. But in the beginning of each episode, it has a title, (Love, Loss, etc.) Make sure you read them. It'll guide you through the episode with more understanding.

IMO, I really like this anime. The art is amazing. The story seems ... realistic. The expressions on each character feels real, and it just has that kind of thing where you'll want to see what happens next. It's a total cliffhanger. Hehe, I love it. ♥


Each character has a completely different perosnality. One's all hyper and kawaii, the other's fascinated in legends/urban legends/rumors/tales about their location/etc. , the other character is silent, and mysterious(you'll find out sooner or later why. Trust me. ;] ) . The other character isn't afraid to take chances, and takes risks. The other character is two-faced(Nice to some people, compeltely different to others.) . One of the other characters is a manipulator/plays with your mind, etc.

All I can say is, this anime is a masterpiece. I suggest this anime to anyone who likes mysteries that involve a bit of ''dark'' in it. :]

This is my first review so please bear with me.

4441 is what Okami kakushi is ranked on Myanimelist. For this reason I felt compel to write this review. I saw the first episode of Okami kakushi and needless to say it grab my interest, it was very good. Then I went on Myanimelist to read more about it and notice that it was ranked 4441. I was disappointed but I continued to watch it because like I said the first episode was very good. Every episode that I watched after that I was waiting for the story to fall apart ... or a character to go crazy. Which is actually a testament to how good this anime is because even thought I watched every episode with the wrong mindset I still enjoyed it. I’m going to be brutally honest Okami kakushi is not my favorite anime, not even close. However, it does not deserve to be ranked at 4441. In my opinion it’s a lot better than many of the anime in the top 1000. I can’t say how many times I ended watching an anime because it was ranked relatively high but turned out to be complete crap. I want to name and scrutinize a few but I respect other people’s opinion and I don’t want a bunch of hate messages from people because I was making fun of their favorite anime.

Anyways back to the review. Im going to try to convince you that Okami kakushi is a good anime. One, Okami kakushi is not the prequel or sequel to Higurashi. So don’t be surprise or hate if it doesn’t follow the same story that Higurashi does. Two, Okami kakushi has legit suspense and mystery. I am going to try to keep this from having any spoilers. Hiroshi, the protagonist, moved to a new town and soon begins to realize that things are not always what they seem. The town has a weird folk tale, his classmates act strange around him, and people are disappearing. Not the most original but definite mystery and suspense. Three, most of the mystery surrounding the town is explained. In my personal experience there are many anime that don’t explain things. It was nice to see that Okami kakushi did so I was not left with a huge hole in the story. Fourth, the characters are a little cliché but it doesn’t mean that they were bad and personally I like the “villain”. We were given his background story and I was able to understand things from his point of view and his plan was not that convoluted or ridiculous.

To sum up Okami kakushi is not that bad, it’s good. Also don’t watch episode 12, everything is explained after episode 11. Take my word for it; pretend episode 12 does not exist. Okami kakushi is underrated. If you’re bored and want to watch a mystery/horror then Okami kakushi wouldn’t be that bad. Don’t expect anything ground breaking. But it’s better than watching something stupid like Serial Experiments Lain. Oops I forgot I wasn't going to poke fun of at another anime, maybe no one will read this far.

Before I get started, I'm going to state that I will be REVIEWING Ookami Kakushi, not COMPARING it to Higurashi or Umineko like the other "reviews" have been doing for this show. The only thing they have in common is the author, the setting, and the overall vibe of the series.
Here I am, my favorite anime genres being horror, thriller, psychological, mystery and anything of the like, searching for a new anime to fit said genres. That being said, it is a hard task indeed. Why? Well, there are only a handful of well done horror/thriller series out there that are really worth watching, ... such as Higurashi, Another, Shiki, etc. Suddenly, out of the blue, I see Ookami Kakushi! A horror-genre series with a dark atmosphere, mysterious story and the author of a few other great thriller series. "This is a dream come true!" I say to myself as I start to look up the first episode to try it out. Because of bad reviews (In which a majority compared the series instead of reviewing it) I had lower expectations. But it's a new horror series, so why not?
Now that the long introduction is out of the way, let's get started with what I thought about the series.
Story: 8
The story is described on MyAnimeList's page for the series, so I shouldn't have to tell you what it's about. The description they give you is kind of vague, but that's because it's an easy show to spoil. About that, the story is also fairly predictable at some parts, and I basically figured out what was going on by episode 2. Not even lying. It's not hard. So sadly, that took away some of the excitement of finding out the mystery of the story.
My thoughts on the story, other than the mystery aspect being weak, is that it's unique and still somewhat interesting as it goes on. It has a sort of creepy vibe to it, and I feel as though if I were living in that town... well, I wouldn't. The story is executed... to an O.K. extent. Again, the execution and what it decides to show you makes it too easy to figure out, too early into the show. Which is a downside. Though, basically everything is explained so you shouldn't have any questions in the end. If you do, then they'll probably be about trivial things that don't really matter much at all.
Art: 9
The series was animated in 2010, I believe. Which is good, because most series getting closer to present day get better and better when it comes to animation. This series definitely shows it. The art is wonderful, and the dark tone of it creates a creepy atmosphere throughout. There were moments in the series where I looked in awe, because the animation looked beautiful as the music (Which I'll talk about soon) added an extreme emotional vibe to it, causing me to even choke up at one point. Animation and art is definitely one of this series' stronger aspects.
Sound: 10
Oh my god how I love the soundtrack! It has a sort of traditional Japanese sound to it, which is good for the kind of story is holds, as the story has a lot to do with old family traditions and what not. Some of the music also manages to make a scene much more emotional, as I stated before, and there's one particular track that really stood out to me. (Which I'll be looking up soon.) The music and sound is outstanding, and the series' strongest aspect.
Character: 6
And here's where the show has it's downfall. The main character, Kuzumi, is extremely dull. To add onto that, he's a wimp. He screams a lot, he's looks and sounds pathetic... it actually really bothered me.
The other characters aren't really worth mentioning except for two that I particularly liked; Kuzumi's sister and the main antagonist. Kuzumi's sister is a small girl, who looks to be around 9-10 years old, in a wheelchair. She's adorable, although mean to her brother sometimes. Sometimes I find it odd that they make her CGI when she's rolling around in her wheelchair outside, though.
The main antagonist... I just liked him. Nothing really special. He was... cool. Haha, I know that doesn't sound very professional but that's my honest opinion. Not saying my reviews are professional, either, because they're most definitely not.
Oh, Kurumi was cute, too, mainly in episode 12, which I'll mention before I finish this review.
Enjoyment: 9
To be honest, the first two episodes did not get me hooked. They mentioned wolves and I don't find interest in wolves whatsoever. But I pushed on, and after episode 3 it began to get interesting, showing signs of insanity being part of the plot. I love insanity in anime, I really do. From then on, I was hooked. I was satisfied with the end. It was nice, music execution was spot on and so was animation. They even had a 12th episode to boot! And what did they do with it? Something I appreciate. I didn't finish the last episode, because my internet had stopped working halfway through and I won't be getting back to it. The last episode is like a filler episode that takes place 2... months, I believe, after the 11th. It's good, though, for character development and it's a nice change. It's funny, and it shows a cute side to Kurumi, which I especially enjoyed.
Overall (I use a calculator to find the mean of my scores) I give this series an 8. It was a good watch, and I may even consider purchasing it by Sentai Filmworks depending on the price. It'd be an interesting addition to my shelf.
Try out this series if you're desperately looking for a good horror series! If you haven't yet and you're looking for more good horror/mystery, I suggest Another, Higurashi no naku Koro ni, Denpa Teki na Kanojo and Shiki.

To begin, I, luckily, didn't discover that this was a Ryukishi07 work until about halfway through. I do believe that many only dislike this anime because it came from Ryukishi07, as it is very different from other works. I personally liked it alright.

Story:
It took a long time to figure out what exactly was going on, and once it tells you, it rushes through everything. Simply put, this should have been a longer anime. There just didn't seem to be enough room to fit what was necessary to make it good. The story certainly gave good mystery, yet, at the same time, skated over some things ... and just threw others into your face so fast it was just stupid. Literally, everything comes out because two characters are trapped together for a few hours. That's the only reason.

Art:
I loved the art. I thought it was beautiful. It actually somewhat reminded me of Jigoku Shoujo; or Hell Girl. I don't have much to say other than it's the shiny, newer art style of modern times. And it was great.

Sound:
I was quite fond of the opening and ending of this series. They were really pretty and just had a great feel to them. Again, was slightly reminded of Jigoku Shoujo by the opening. Not entirely sure why, but, I had to look up the other opening after starting Ookamikakushi.

Character:
Pretty much all the characters only had one dimension. Probably due to the fact that they only lasted a few episodes, or if they lasted longer, they were minor characters. Even the main characters were pretty one-dimensional beings. They changed a bit, but overall, nothing changed. Only two characters changed a decent amount, and they weren't even main main characters! The antagonist was very badly written as well. Just...just really bad.

Enjoyment:
For all the flaws, it was pretty good. Rushed? Sure. Bad character development? Pretty normal for twelve episode shows.

Whatever you do, don't go in expecting something like Higurashi or Umineko, because this is not like that. At all.

I believe this is a sadly underrated anime. It certainly has its faults, but for me the positives outweigh the negatives by far. I've divided this review into the main points which were good and those that were not so good.

The good:

-The premise/idea of the story/ world building... (the Jin-Rou or human wolves is one of my favorite themes, the creativity seen in the order of the Ookami faith is good, the effect of the hassaku scent is interesting, the idea of mitsu and kamibito and how they have learned to exist in a human world is a fine concept, etc.)

-The voice acting ... is good and features a variety of seiyuu that I LOVE, including Kobayashi Yuu (who I think does a god job playing pre-teen boys), Katou Emiri (who I enjoyed most for playing Kyubey in Madoka Magica), Okamoto Nobuhiko (who does some crazy characters like Rin from Blue Exorcist and Karma from Assassination Classroom), Gotou Yuuko (who played Madoka's mom and also Asahina from Haruhi Suzumiya), and Fujiwara Keijuu (who's been in too many anime for me to pick out a favorite.)

-The OST is astounding. The opening song and ending song are both beautiful, catchy, and pretty easy to sing along with. The scores and instrumentals used throughout the anime are also some of my favorites.

-A strong-willed main female lead (Kushinada Nemuru), capable of fighting and killing but actually "good" at heart with a strong sense of duty.

The bad:

-The animation would have been fine if this were a 2005ish anime, but it was in fact made in 2010, so naturally people expected better and more detailed art by this time. It's not hideous or anything-- I think it's got cute character designs-- but it's cheap.

-A main male lead (Kuzumi) who is not convincing as a 16 year-old boy and grates on the nerves of many viewers. He's not very bright (can't understand the "mystery" unless it's clearly spelled out), he gets scared very easily, he rarely makes any effort at self-defense, and he's just kind of "delicate." I don't really mind characters like this because I like lead males with a sense of vulnerability to them, but this show went a little overboard with it. However, if you watch the anime thinking of Kuzumi as a 10-13 year-old boy raised in the city his whole life, his character is a LOT more believable and understandable.

-Insufficient discussion/fleshing out of psychology, the act of killing, and how Kushinada could be construed as sociopathic.
