I would like you to check out this anime review I have made. Here's the link https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=333079. I would like to know your opinion on the series and what you think of my review. I am open to criticism. If you like the review, clicking the "helpful button" is the best way you can show me your support. Thank you in advance for taking your time in my anime review.
I tend to better appreciate series that have clear flaws, but also do some things VERY well. Take Galactic Heroes for example. The plot is fucking idiotic at points. There are just SO many plot holes and logical inconsistencies with that series. We just have to accept that 80% of Mankind are ethnic Germans 500 years in the future when they're 2 percent of Mankind now. It's never actually explained that they killed the Non-Germans or how the fuck they managed to do this, you just aren't supposed to think about it. There is a Death Star ripoff that guards the entire "entrance" to a galaxy. They don't use warp gate technology and the Death Star is near the warp gate. That would kind of make sense. We're just supposed to believe it somehow patrols the entire edge of a fucking galaxy, but can only be used defensively for...reasons. The 2 greatest tacticians use tactics from infantry battles of ancient history, despite the fact they're fighting in a 3D environment where using something like an Echelon Formation wouldn't make any sense. One planet with 10 million people manufactures all the weapons for 2 entire galaxies at war. The author thought it would be a cool idea because he wanted to make a space version of Venice during the 4th Crusade. Logistically it makes no sense.
However, Galactic Heroes has a massive cast of well written, fully fleshed out characters. It tackles the problems with both Democracy and authoritarianism in a balanced and well thought out manner. It has exciting battle scenes, emotional drama, spectacular music, and the artists really tried despite a tiny budget. It has over 1,000 characters and they never use the exact same face. Unlike other anime, characters will have different shaped jaws, cheekbones, and facial structure to actually make them look like unique people.
A younger me would probably give it a 4/10 because I was able to find problems with it and then feel like I'm really smart for noticing those problems. At this point, I'm more concerned with looking for what it did well and what it wanted to accomplish.
I'm glad you enjoyed some of my goofy reviews! No two people are going to agree with every anime. Or every movie, music, visual art, etc. It would make art really boring if we all had the same opinions and couldn't discuss why we approached a work differently or felt differently. With mathematics, there is only one answer. 2+2 is always 4. It doesn't matter if we come from different cultures or have different life backgrounds, the equation is the same for both of us. Certain aspects of anime like frames of animation per second or numbers of colors used in the palette, are purely objective like math. However, other aspects are subjective and allow anime to be art rather than science.
Let's compare Tatami Galaxy to Akira. In terms of animation quality, Akira is flat out superior. That's not surprising considering it cost a LOT more money to make and had a much larger staff of in-between animators. Akira also uses a much wider color scheme, because once again it had more budget and time. However, someone could say that they hate the character art in Akira. The characters have huge foreheads like cavemen and the women are ugly as dogs! That's a perfectly valid opinion to have. Meanwhile, you could also say that you love Tatami's art for its unique, playful style that offers balance to the series' more philosophical questions and prevents it from being too brooding. That's also a completely fine opinion.
We all have weird anime that we connect with on a personal level. My favorite anime is Elfen Lied, which has a HUGE amount of problems. I could write 10 pages of things that are wrong with that series. However, because of my own background it had a massive impact on me when I first saw it at 17. It influenced me to expand outside of comfort zone and that led to me discovering some of my favorite works literature. I love that anime so much I've seen it 12 times and helped write the English language wikia. Loving a series is not the same as seeing something as flawless. When we love people, we love them despite of their character flaws. I approach art in a similar manner.
Of course, most people won't approach your own special shows with the same experience. This leads to person A saying "Why do you like this SHIT?!" Then person B is very offended and says "What?! Series X is a masterpiece! You're the asshole who likes series Y! Now that was a trash series!" I try to avoid these kinds of arguments, because when I said I like discussing art, I meant in a more productive fashion.
