Synopsis

Having suffered ruthless bullying for the better part of his life, 17-year-old Yu has become emotionally numb and dissociated from reality, no longer able to act like a normal human being. Although he possesses the exceptional talent to dodge punches, Yu prefers to let his perpetrators beat him down as he finds no meaning in his survival.

Things begin to look up when Yu meets an old boxing trainer nicknamed "K." Having raised five champions, K's years of experience and an impressive gut feeling allow him to recognize Yu's near-superhuman fighting charisma immediately. K rushes to take Yu under his wing, despite the latter's apparent lack of interest.

However, after being reminded of a bright memory from the past, Yu has a change of heart and accepts K's offer, hoping to experience the same light once again. Thus, Yu enters a world full of formidable adversaries—righteous and monstrous alike—and for the first time ever, he has no choice but to fight back.

The Boxer is originally a webtoon series which was officially published in book format by Daewon C.I. (대원씨아이) from October 29, 2021, to September 29, 2025.

The series has been digitally published in English by LINE Webtoon since May 28, 2020. The volumes have been published by Yen Press under the Ize Press imprint since December 20, 2022. It has also been released in German by Altraverse since July 17, 2023.

I started reading this webtoon thinking it would be just another fighting manhwa, but I was very surprised.

This story is beautiful, and the fighting is also excellent. However, I believe the best part of the work is the characters and their development. I've even been moved by some of the characters' stories (the best being Yuto Takeda's story).

The characters are very human, and their backstories are very well-written and fit the characters. Each has their own motives and ideals. And it's not a story where only the protagonist develops; all the characters are well-developed.

Honestly, I can see its appeal as a story. Having loved 'The Horizon' by the same author I wanted to read his other works to get a feel for his stories further. I wish I hadn't. Ultimately 'The Boxer' is another nihilistic tale that is rather glum and gloomy in its final acts. Having enjoyed the story highly throughout its initial chapters I was hoping for some sort of character development throughout but it never seemed to occur; I am sorely disappointed with how this manga ended up and hope that the author can really get a grip. Its good but starts to get waaaaaaayyyy too repetitive in terms of back stories. All of them are exactly the same just a different flavour.
I might even say that even the back stories in Demon Slayer were better than this. This starts to get boring when there are no fight. It is not like the fights were unable to tell the thoughts they did it by showing and not telling but while we are in the back story sections they are just tell tell tell tell and it just numbs the mind to it you don't feel much of it even though they are ...
