Visual Art's' originally published the game under its Key label in 2004 for Windows PC. Game publisher Prototype ported the game on to PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable in 2006 and 2009, respectively. Sekai Project released the game worldwide on Steam in September 2014.

A light novel written by Yuuichi Suzumoto and illustrated by E-ji Komatsu was bundled with the limited edition of the physical Windows release and the PS2 port. It is made up of four chapters—"Snow Globe," "Jerusalem," "Hoshi no Hito," and "Tircis to Aminte." Visual Art's republished the novel under its VA Bunko imprint in October 2008.

In 2016, David Production animated the original visual novel into a five-episode series that was streamed on Nico Nico Douga between July 7 and August 4. The third side story, "Hoshi no Hito," also received a theatrical anime adaptation that was screened in September of the same year.

I love Key Studio, but I actually hate Planetarian. I'd prefer an anime adaptation of Harmonia, or Summer Pockets, or news about their next VN because it's been a relatively long time since Summer Pockets was released... Better yet, I'd like to have news about Angel Beats VN (I was really interested in that project...).

I always like crowdfunded projects. That's genuine love for something the fans really want to see!

Ah~ I wish people would join me in funding the rest of Nichijou!

Not familiar with the VN or anime but that art style is lovely and nostalgic.

I liked the original series. Not sure how a prequel is going to work but I'm curious and interested.

I hope I can find a way to back this, it is my fave short run anime and one of the stories that has touched me the most.

That's neat, I hope it goes well for them. Planetarian is a great anime. Shame you can't support it from outside of Japan, though.
