According to Investor Relations released by GONZO, the auditor of GONZO canceled the release of the audit report for the fiscal year 2008 because they strongly doubted the retainment of GONZO to be a going concern. GONZO will be ousted from the stock market soon.

The auditor pointed out that:
1. The amount of debts of GONZO has been in excess of their total asset for two years.
2. Some of the debts borrowed from the banks are overdue.
3. The restructuring plan presented by GONZO is unreliable.

GONZO stated that the good sales of "Strike Witches" and "Afro Samurai" contributed to the improvement of the operating income. However, the failures in other segments of the business expanded the amount of the total loss (3.4 billion yen).

They also mentioned that one of the production contracts of anime was canceled.

Gonzo got into so much trouble because they raised their own capital and took the risks (which didn't pay off). Other studios might produce even worse shows and have worse sales, but most remain relatively safe.

That said, Gonzo was incredibly talented. Kaleido Star, Last Exile, and Gankutsuou proved that they could make amazing shows when conditions were ideal.

Wow this is sad for them. I guess I can't guage I've only seen a small few of their works. Though I've noticed their excessive use of CGI in just about everywhere. I don't see Kyoto going anywhere. It's been around forever. I.G would probably go before Kyo

This is sad, gonzo has produced some good anime these last 2 seasons (saki, Linebarrels of Iron, etc.) many plans of extending series are being dropped :(

All I can say that a good part of it is our fault for not buying enough dvds and stuff, but 3.4 billion yen is a lot still.

it would be interesting to check out the history of GONZO and where it went wrong.

When they started to get involved with non-anime related business. Making video games, MMORPGs, other random stuff, thus increasing the number of workers, etc, etc. Of course, the anime sales also played some part in it, but not the most important one (and Gonzo sales aren't even that bad in comparison with some other companies).

Also, Gonzo has made other great anime besides Afro Samurai such as their adaptation of Romeo and juliet, Basilisk, Peace Maker Kurogane and many more. I'm sure if some of the users here had taken a look at what it's made, they'd be surprised by their selections. They tend to make animes based on manga/novel with substance unlike other anime studios. cough* a studio that starts with K* cough.

Finally. And well deserved. Maybe they start doing useless 3DCG as a hobby :3

Seriously, they haven't produced anything of interest to me in the last couple of years, so it's not like I'm missing anything because they're "dying." Proof that they need to do something, and fast.

Poor GONZO..

They make quite a number of good animes too, yet they are facing bankruptcy..

Saki might prove to be a good seller, but other than that...
