Also I heard MJP will be getting another season under consideration. Quite surprised if they will follow through with it with this number of sales. I found the series average and it didn't pick up until like the final 5 or so episodes.

I think it's also partly got to do with the very unfair and imo "disgusting" view that otakus have of female characters that are over a certain age being "used goods". I lost the number of times within the anime itself tend to make a friggin big deal about age amongst female characters and to be frank I think it's pretty horrific. I think that's part of the reason for middle or high school being such a prevalent premise.
Hmmm....it's hard to tell how much of that is serious. Otaku enjoy poking fun at characters, so age is popular as ammunition. However, if this reflected a genuine gripe, there wouldn't be much seiyuu/idol worship either, seeing that most are adults.
As for the high school setting, it's an idealized adolescence (youth, innocence, puppy love, most options in life still open) that engages the audience. It's definitely less about nostalgia than a yearning for something they probably never had (and probably doesn't exist, at least in the super ideal form depicted in anime) - kinda like the yearning for that romanticized 1950s family unit among some older Americans.
That's kind of what of what annoys me about largely high school based anime a lot of the time. Maybe it's cause I'm the adventurous type who likes high stakes and interesting turns of events in his anime (not that a high school setting necessarily forbids that) so I just can't understand why otaku want to see a continuous cycle of low key idealized light comedies about high school life.
Also I think it'd worth pointing out that a lot of girls in high school in anime really don't look like they are high school age anyway a lot of the time. Way too bishoujo and mature looking so its not like the jump to college will change things up much in terms of the look. And it works the other way around too though. I mean take Golden Time for example, Koko IMO just as easily could have been labelled as fifteen years old based on how the scale of age vs appearance has been set by anime.
That's a major difference between Western and Japanese animation though I find. Japan puts a very heavy emphasis on making its characters look as physically attractive as possible while Western animation they kind of just tend to look their age, gender, and occupational status. Different considerations though cause typically Western audiences aren't watching animation expecting lots of sexuality while with otaku its definitely an expectation and key focus.

what is going on? This seems a rather large boost for one of the series with the lowest estimations of Autumn.

Speaking about college age Golden Time presales being low makes me thing of Rozen Maiden 2013 having lower sales as well. I wonder if that too is due to the college focus on older Jun, his relationship with Saito. Might be too old for the folks who seem to prefer high school stories either because they're in high school or because they feel nostalgic about it more than they do about college. I love the season which is currently on sale but it is a huge drop from the original series though admittedly a ton about the market has changed since Traumend.

Frankly, I want to see more college based series particularly when it comes to romantic dramas or romantic comedy. The anime industry needs more Honey and Clovers and Nodame Cantabiles and less Ore no Imoutos and Boku wa Tomodachis. Occasionally a decent one like Toradora and Sakurasou will pop up and sometimes even an amazing one like True Tears or White Album 2, but those are typically very rare.
But otherwise I agree. This concept as humor and as a serious topic is found in anime, in J-drama and in real life in Japan as well. It is a truly painful subject for many women in Japan today. Complex societal issues beyond the scope of the sales thread for the most part but I think you may be right about them losing some of their moe factor and their marketing factor as well. Yui Horie joking about always being 17 has a ring of truth to it.
And I agree that White Album 2 is one of the best romance dramas around. With introductory chapter being about when they are in their final year of high school and closing chapter being three years later it will be a college anime eventually, assuming it gets a second season for closing chapter.
Sakurasou, if they ever animate the end of the novels is actually a college story in the very end as well.
Was it Yui Horie who joked about being 17? I thought it was someone else, or maybe it's more than one person. Anyways, you're an irrational Yui Horie fan aren't you lol (just kidding).
As for the issue of older female characters, I'm not all that familiar with the situation of older women in Japan, but I'm inclined to believe hpulley and Amiluhur, at least to an extent. Which kind of sucks in my opinion, I would like to see more characters with a little more maturity in significant roles (not just minor characters). Hopefully it becomes more common.
@kuuderes_shadow, when you think about it though, without some sort of outside/societal pressures, why would they feel bad about being a little older? We are talking about people not much older than high school right? Is that even considered old in most places?

Really? Because for one thing I don't see that very often at all, and for another when I do see it it's invariably the women thinking bad of themselves, not other people treating her badly, as a result of her age.

Was it Yui Horie who joked about being 17?

As for the high school setting, it's an idealized adolescence (youth, innocence, puppy love, most options in life still open) that engages the audience. It's definitely less about nostalgia than a yearning for something they probably never had (and probably doesn't exist, at least in the super ideal form depicted in anime) - kinda like the yearning for that romanticized 1950s family unit among some older Americans.
