Good for Madoka! Just another award in the line, well-deserved with every single frame. I hope the this trend will continue in 2012 as well, not just 2011. First it was Kobe, then Newtype x 12, now this one. *crosses fingers for Nihon Taisho*

Well done Madoka !

I Think some show were better tho... =/

Distinctive artstyle is distinctive. I loved it but would not want to see it in ALL my animu.

It's always Madoka, lol. I never expected that to win, much less for all this hate. xD

But no, I enjoyed the art, too. It's one of the reasons I kept watching it. The show overall was enjoyable, but I will say it's a bit overrated, and I would never go so as to say:

" [. . .] this series will become the necessary catalyst to change the world we live in."

Oh, well. I'll admit that there were shows I liked better (AnoHana being one of them, as someone else here mentioned), but there's always next year, maybe.

So congrats, Madoka!

if you are compare them art-wise then you should know that animation, especially TV series is the combination of million drawings. if you make every drawing as detailed and colorful as the fanart below then it will take a lot of time and billions of money, even anime movie doesn't go that far in art quality let alone TV series which have to finish their work every week

Obviously, Moe + NGE feeling + good music and you win the best anime award.

I find it absolutely hilarious that you would call Madoka overrated, while you have Naruto, Bleach AND One Piece in your top 5. I'd be willing to bet that you didn't bother to watch Madoka.

Madoka certainly is deserving of this award.

I didn't really enjoy the series as much as others but I still think it is well deserved. I've never seen animation like that in the anime (style at least), reminds me of a few videogames. Heck, the beginning seemed like a boss battle. Charlotte too :3

With the hope that this series will become the necessary catalyst to change the world we live in, we award it the Grand Prize.

A rip-off of what?

Go on. Tell me, I'm all ears.

Steins Gate, Higurashi and probably Fate/

then i can say every movie, novel and whatever have story is rip-off of some other. not only anime and not only madoka. like harry potter must rip-off the wizard thing from some other novel, or the shawshank redemption must have rip-off the prison setting from other movie

Steins Gate, Higurashi also must have rip-off some plot element from other anime/novel/manga

@Trisection & PointmanW

Thanks for the links.

Was expecting an art/animation-focused reason than the story aspect

but anyway, even without knowing their reason, it's still clear why Madoka won the award.

If PointmanW's post is true, then there must be inconsistency with the criteria. O.o

you can download the official Announcement of Award-Winning Works for the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival pdf file here
http://plaza.bunka.go.jp/english/

the criteria did changed, if you also look at the winning manga reason for award
