Looks like Jinshi is doing his own investigation to find where Maomao is. This coincidentally led him to a place that had connections with all the events.

Definitely got to see how Jinshi operates to resolve this whole problem. His observation skills are also evident in this episode, which imo is impressive. He also showed more emotions than usual because the case involved Maomao. It felt like an eerie episode but the execution was done really well.

Quack doctor’s disrespect is unreal lmaoo. You literally have Luomen and the others on their toes for Gyokuyou, and he’s being told to take care of Maomao the cat… NOOOOO, lol. Anyway, jokes aside, I’m just glad it wasn’t anything serious with Gyokuyou, and we jumped back to the main subject… Maomao’s disappearance. Seriously, very shrewd of Jinshi to take a hint and jumping on that clinic lady within a glance. I mean you know, the things you try to hide eventually come back to bite you, so yeah it was coming for her.

Trauma aside, I’m glad man figured out everything. Now you see, THAT GHOST STORY EPISODE we had some weeks ago, was actually very practically part of a BIGGER picture all along. As yeah, the one who died was actually once used to be the head maid of Loulan’s mother, and Suirei is actually her DAUGHTER… YEAHHHH, I loved how all of it was connected. You seriously never have anything just for the sake of it, in this series. This tells why Suirei and Shisui are around each other.

Jinshi went ABSOLUTELY STEROIDS btw on Loulan’s fake, seriously, he was at his limits, and he laid out all of it on Loulan’s fake and her ladies in waiting. You have to feel for them lol. The eunuch they all know has a side this dangerous to him as well lmao. The truth is out, in more ways than one, and yeah all of it has taken a very dangerous political angle as well. Expected of Lakan’s son, but yeah, I’m waiting for the man himself to come face to face with Jinshi next time lol.

Great episode! All that build-up is paying off. Now yeah, after this one it shouldn't be hard enough to guess who ACTUALLY Loulan is xD

So Shisui appeared after Loulan entered the palace and now that Shisui is missing Loulan is missing as well, this is just my speculation but the could be connected they might even be the same person.
There was also the part during the massages where Shisui tried to avoid contact with some of the high consorts.

Anyway it seems things are moving in the palace and we learned some new things about the past.

Operation rescue Maomao in full swing and my goodness what an episode, one of my all time faves. Jinshi’s willing to go to any lengths to get his girl back. We really saw him go mask off and crack today in a way he’s never done before. For someone as composed as he is to drop the facade and go a bit psycho at times shows you how much he cares about Maomao 🥰 but this conspiracy keeps getting bigger, can’t wait to get to the bottom of it.

What 10 days without Maomao does to a mf 😭 I’m surprised Jinshi made it this long without breaking down and moving mountains, but credit to him for staying composed up to today.

Hyuuga-sensei has a tendency to set up all these different plot threads and have them converge all together slowly, so I had a feeling Shisui and Suirei were gonna be related or have a connection to one of the victims of the previous emperor since we spent so much time focusing on that. But man seeing Shenlu have a full on panic attack and her PTSD flare up over Jinshi looking like the former emperor was sad. Even all these later she’s got all this pain bottled up and she’s just one of many little girls who went through that. Then they couldn’t even be free in death.. makes my stomach turn. Understandable Jinshi would be shocked by all that too, but none of that’s his fault. Sins of the father and all that.

HOLY SHIT didn’t expect Jinshi to crash out on Loulan’s stand in like that. Had to pause the tv to take that moment in because that’s the most aggressive we’ve seen him, certainly in a long time. Again just shows you how angry he is about his girl being missing. Feel bad for Renpu tho because she was just genuinely following orders. Poor thing couldn’t even speak :/ again going back to Hyuuga-sensei laying all this ground work, a few weeks ago Lakan was feeling Shishou out during a Go game, knew Shishou felt sus and he’s Loulan’s dad.. yea it’s all coming together now lol. This conspiracy goes deep, but what’s the actual endgame 🤔

Maybe it has to do something with developing weapons for another country under the table which explains the increase in grain and metal prices as well as why the foreign emissary was in the village Suirei and Shisui took Maomao to. Can’t wait to learn more next episode, sadly we gotta wait a couple weeks but it was dope seeing a Jinshi led episode and meeting Maomao’s adopted brother. He seems fun. Lol at Lakan destroying the palace gate. He’s such an overprotective dad 😂

This episode does raise a question that Jinshi doesn't need to be here in the first place. In fact, he should stay away from the palace as far as possible.

I hope this long arc doesn't just serve the purpose to show off Jinshi hairpin's power.

Jinshi snapping might've been the highlight but Gaoshun taking charge while Jinshi was all shaken up like an absolute boss was awesome too.

Expected enraged bloodthirsty dad Lakan, got goofy overprotective dad Lakan instead. And I kinda dig it.

Lakan's outburst scene made me laugh so hard, easily on of the top ten moments of the anime thus far. Jinshi on the other hand though, I had no idea he could get that scary. Let's hope Maomao returns quickly

Damn, Lakan and Jishi’s outbursts were both unexpected in their ways, Maomao sure is loved ~

Laolan was giving suspicious vibes from the get-go and I’m honestly not surprised to see that they did indeed have something going on in the background. It’s sad that she just left whoever in her house to trouble though.

And the masks! Op had a bunch of references to it, it’s making me think it was definitely intentional now. And that teaser for next episode, why must you go on a 1-week break now lol. Jokes aside, can’t wait to see how this’ll unfold. Jinshi-sama’s in serious mode. That reveal of his resemblance to the former highness, i hope we get to the end of that too as in Maomao learning about it…

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Now that the main detective is away as hostage, Jinshi can't delegate the investigation.

I'm glad this conspiracy is slowly growing larger and taking solid shape, but I didn't like how the show went from the old lady in the clinic all the way to Concubine Luolan. A bunch of new information got dropped on us really quickly, and the connections were too far-fetched.

The grave of the lady-in-waiting, the random leap to the daughter she had, the random leap to the concubine she served, the random leap to the concubine's later marriage to Shishou, the random leap to their daughter Luolan...

It's also a little strange that it's been 10 days without Jinshi making any sort of progress with finding Maomao. She told him the escape route and the name of the person(s) involved, and he still hasn't found anything?

Jinshi still needs to get experience on how to be a ruler and such. The palace is the probably the best place to do it.

The preview of the next episode focused even more on the hairpins ("hair sticks"), which was a big point in the previous episode. With the fox masks for the festival, they seem to be implying that the hairpin will make Maomao recognizable. Will Jinshi or someone from Jinshi's subordinates make it up North in time? It doesn't seem likely, timeline-wise. Their investigation has barely started.

Jinshi is very scary when he's angry.

Lakan went mad after he heard what happened to Maomao, really an interesting sight to see haha

And we're finally introduced to Lahan, Lakan's adopted son bearing the same name as him, and we know how crazy good each one in this family is.

The investigation continues, and Jinshi is starting to lose his cool...

I loved seeing Jinshi have the bulk of the screen time in this episode, with his investigating around Maomao's disappearance as well as the matters in the rear palace. Once again, this anime has done something I have thoroughly enjoyed, which is tying past episodes into the present, even the ones that seemed like "filler", such as the ghost story episode. You could see just how much Jinshi cares about Maomao through how angry he was when finding out the conspiracies and the malpractices of the rear palace.

As for Concubine Loulan disappearing, I think we can all infer who she is now, given Shisui has also left the rear palace with Maomao. The story is really picking up now, and I'm expecting nothing less but banger episodes from here on out.

@vexomous He had a starting point with the shrine gate leading outside, which is a huge hint and more than what most kidnapping cases get. He didn't find a single witness near the exit? What about at the docks, we saw Maomao travel by boat.

And Jinshi knows about Suiren. He briefly pictures her when they were discussing the letter "sui" last episode. She was involved in the assassination attempt on Jinshi last season, and they found her dead when they went to arrest her. There should've been a lot of investigation done on her already.

I don't know, I thought Jinshi was smarter than this. He definitely has a lot of resources and manpower. Possibly with access to the entire spy ring at the palace.

@perseii Episode 9 mentions that the emperor had previously had another child with a former lady-in-waiting (named Taihou in episode 18). This child was not recognized, as the lady-in-waiting had been accused of sleeping with the inner court physician. For this reason, the reigning empress decided to make all doctors working at the inner court eunuchs. The doctor and the child (a girl) were banished from the court.

The former lady-in-waiting worked in the service of a concubine, who happened to be Loulan's mother. Before marrying Shishou, she was the concubine of the former emperor.

The clinic's old lady, ShenIü, a friend and colleague of Taihou's, was also the former emperor's victim and seems to have actively participated in the conspiracy. (Maomao had estimated at least to the affair of Lihua's lady-in-waiting, but probably the white powder and other events are indirectly his doing).

---

That aside, the episode was impressively directed. I was quite shaken when Jinshi made the connection between Taihou and Loulan. I was also moved by the victim ShenIü, whose story is particularly sad. I'm glad Maomao's line "she could have lived worse, and died with the emperor's death" was removed from episode 16.

@Softhenic03 one correction though. Suirei cannot be Taihous daughter. The daughter in question was born before the current emperror, so she should be at least 35 now. And Suirei is definetely younger. But the pieces still can be put together.

@perseii I think the animation staff also want to allow their viewers to think and connect from everything they've watched. This is not an anime where you're taken by the hand. ;)

Taihou is already mentioned elsewhere, since episode 10 on ghost stories was not placed at random.

The connection to Loulan is obvious, as Jinshi had no way of knowing what plot was afoot at the time. It was the tomb of a woman before whom ShenIü (but also Suirei) prayed.
The woman's words took him back to her past (+ShenIu's speech on Jinshi's striking resemblance to the former emperor), when she had been Loulan's mother's lady in waiting. That's how you conduct an investigation, even if it's based on small clues. :)
The anime actually backed this up with a Luomen/Maomao quote just beforehand. On their ability to be rational. Which helped Jinshi to calm down.

@perseii No, I really don't.

The Taihou situation caused a scandal in the imperial palace at the time. Although Jinshi wasn't born at the time, as an intendant working at the inner court, it's only natural that he should have heard of the affair. What's more, he receives a map showing the location of the cemetery, which is not just any cemetery, but that of the former emperor's victims.

The only clue about Taihou, the former ghost storyteller, was her connection with the former concubine who happens to be Loulan's mother (and her connection with Suirei, for the viewer).

I understand that Jinshi would know these things, I don't have a problem with that. What I found awkward was why he would connect these innocuous pieces of information together in the context of this conspiracy. Which is somewhat cleared up by what you said next:

TuyNOM said:

That point actually makes a lot of sense. Jinshi basically didn't have any other option, he had to act on the only piece of information he had.

I wonder, though, what Jinshi would've asked Luolan if she was actually there in her room. However naturally you phrase it, the question would've boiled down to, "what can you tell me about the illegitimate child that your mother's former lady-in-waiting had, who left your mother's service before you yourself were even born?"

If Luolan replied, "why would I know that?", nothing would've been out of the ordinary, and Jinshi wouldn't have had anything to follow up with.

Maomao's a personal issue for Jinshi, but the more pressing issue is Loulan taking leave of the rear palace: to touch the divine and then flee from it is the height of heresy. Many heads will roll by the end of this.

@ajw215799 because Suirei realized that Maomao started to suspect Shenlü, Shisui, and the new eunuch (i.e. Suirei), and that Maomao started to notice the connections between them.

A demon with the face of an angel: that's what the former emperor was. He used his beauty to prey on innocent girls, and all the hatred and fear he generated was passed on after his death, either to the empire itself or to Jinshi, who physically resembles him.

Jinshi was amazing in this episode, especially for remembering what Lounen told him and acting just like Maomao. His sharp thinking in stopping Shenlü and connecting the dots between the people linked to her-Loulan, who is practically Shisui, and the former concubine who was cast out with a daughter (who could be Suirei's mother)-was brilliant.

Now they've enraged the devil: hold on tight, because Lakan won't stop until he saves his daughter 😅. And based on what Rahan said, it's possible that Shishou is the culprit.

god damn, didn't know I should have had my notepad out for the first 41 episodes

I've managed to keep up with the plot just fine up until now (mixing up a few names here and there, but it didn't matter much in the bigger picture), but today I could hardly keep track of what was going on, who was related to who, who had done what to who at what point in time etc etc.

might have to rewatch the entire show when this season is over, to see if I can get a clearer picture of what's going on in hindsight

YOOOO the plot twist was INSANE!!!! Already around the ghost story episode I kinda suspected that Shisui was Loulan in disguise, but then it turned out Shisui was a traitor last episode, so I figured she couldn't be Loulan after all... never expected her to be all 3 at the same time tho 🤯🤯🤯

Also so much for Loulan being the only high ranking concubine that Maomao had no connections with 😂 Turns out they hung out together all the time lmao

No this is 100% what is happening. I can't believe it!! It was so well done, I didn't even expect anything at all like it. it's so cool. I'm so hyped about this hahah and they've also been telling us all along!!

this is so exciting hahaha
@aflyingjackie Should have been during the Sex Ed thing, but I don't really recall much there either.

Jinshi is becoming unhinged and I love it! We really got to see his mask slip off this episode. Maomao being missing for over a week now has Jinshi unglued. He's behind frustrated at having absolutely zero clues where she was taken. Gathering clues on who Suirei was pretending to be, what her movements where while she was in disguise. Jinshi is smarter than people give him credit for honestly. Realizing the graveyard in the North part of the rear Palace was significant and heading there right away. Great timing since he caught Shenlu at the exact same headstone Suirei would go to. Jinshi recognizing the smell of rubbing alcohol from when Maomao made some a few episodes back was such a great moment. Like thunder cracking across the sky, Jinshi lashing at Shenlu then having to reign himself in. Shenlu reaction to see Jinshi face and hearing his voice was haunting, even trying to poison herself to not say anything. Jinshi putting it all together more or less, how the bloodlines of the past have now caused this incident and where the source is. The Garnet Pavilion! Where the so called Loulan resides, but what we've known for some time Jinshi does too, Loulan isn't really there. She made her ladies in waiting substitute for her so she could frolic about the rear palace all this time. Hence why she barely talked or left her pavilion. Jinshi again cracking like thunder once he figures out! I loved this scene!! Jinshi almost deranged look as he cupping the girl's face. Lakan finding out Maomao is missing is both good and bad. Good because his resources can help find her and Shishou who's gone as well. Bad because now he's on the warpath. We finally get introduced to his adopted son Lahan. Who's just as much a fox finding these suspicious money trails. Where does everything lead. Why take Maomao. What's the Shi family's plan for everything. Many questions left to be answered

Jinshi was scary this episode.
If you are going to disagree with me, don't bother talking to me. I will seriously hurt you!

Another great ep

Jinshi centered ep, but man was it great to see him crashout on the medic and fake loulan 🤓☝️

The reunion gon be generational.

Lol, quite funny to see lakan crashout as well, along with meeting his silly son lahan

The scarlet twins are back. What will they do to Maomao and Shisui.

Heard there was no ep next week , BUMMER.

9.5/10

Wow, the entire start to this episode was a hilarious mess. I've been loving this show, but every line was ripping me out of the experience of being immersed watching it. Disappointing.

We do need some backstory and development for Jinshi, but not like this! Him randomly deciding to wax poetic at the audience after a terribly contrived interaction was weak. I hope to see more of everyone investigating stuff and making connections---that's where I think this show shines the brightest.

Jinshi making a women drink poison and another cry is the most chaddest thing he did all series probably, even if how terrible it sounds

My suspicion wasn't wrong on Shisou and Loulan. But Loulan is actually Shisui fuuuuuuckkkkk...
They looked similar have same va I thought maybe sister but wow. What a plan. And Suirei is the daughter of that doctor and late victim who was servent to Shisou wife. It's all one big family which did the scandal. Just give Lakan the location and he will take care of the rest.
Lahan is ditto of his adoptive father. Go see finally both cooperating is really cool.

No Maomao but easily one of the best episode in the entire series. Jinshi got focus and he really shinned. Amazing performance by Ootsuka Takeo. He never ever misses.

Chills..🥶
