Why did Toei Animation improve so much over the last few years?

Toei animation used to be infamous for producing some of the worst quality of animation in the industry.

Felt like this started changing around 2015, after Toei animation received extreme amounts of criticism for Dragon Ball Super's early episodes. As Dragon Ball Super went on, the quality began to get better and better.

The same goes for One Piece, whom during 2015 was in the Dressrosa arc (which is widely considered to the worst animated arc in One Piece). The next arc Whole Cake Island seen an improvement in animation. Now One Piece is in Wano arc, and the animation is literally one of the best out there of all anime.

I just was wondering, what changed around 2015-2019(-ish) internally at the company that improved the quality of the shows?

The only logical explanation is that they updated the the hardware and software they use for animation and they hired some young and talented animators who are more used to digital animation.

They still backslide on occasion with stuff like Digimon Adventure 2020.

No, that can't be it. Digimon Xros Wars had amazing battles as early as 2010.

when your shows got better, precure's quality went to shit. precure has been famous for it's amazing animation, and it happens to be a toei show.
the animators got taken off from one project and put on a different one.
want more proof? go princess is considered the last sakuga heavy season. the following years have kind of fallen off a cliff minus a few decent episodes. even the movies look like average episodes now.

I could hit up sakugabooru and post clips.

rejoice, shonenshit got saved by toei's new strategy, to forcefully exclude otaku from the precure fandom.
no more sakuga, or appealing designs(subjective), or action figure merchandise. or fistfights (depends on the show, they got removed because of complaints before)

idk where the improvement is, i dropped one piss after 60 episodes and the biggest waste of my time, so i tried to give you the benefit of the doubt and skim the latest episode, to which is a big battle and the animation just isnt there, about a quarter of the entire episode is a still image in 1440p zoomed into 1080p then panned across, and the scenes where some work was put into it looks like a fan animation. ive seen better animation in family guy than one piss, yet its fans are so disillusioned with the gall to call it a masterpiece. one thing i do agree with is oda is a genius, hes managed to milk a mid series for 20 some years and somehow maintain a loyal fanbase to this dumpster fire of a show, hell if i knew i could shit out a volume akin to a third graders english paper on what they did this weekend id milk it to, dude found an irl money glitch by throwing breadcrumbs at the resource room population

Sakuga doesn't interest me, shounen fans can have it. I would much rather have Tropical-Rouge.

Toei Animation has always proved to be a good studio, but only when it stays away from long running anime.

If I were to guess, it's because the staff re-watched their adaptation of Kanon and decided "yeah, we can't be doing this".

Not sure who misled you like this, but Toei has been producing quality productions for decades. If they're known for anything, it's for making everyone's childhood anime.

Pretty sure he's referring to animation quality. Most Toei shows before the 2020's looked awful or painfully mediocre.

If so, that would also be wrong and dumb. Toei has made a ton of anime over the years in a wide range of styles. Way too much of a generalization to say most of them are "awful or painfully mediocre". I was just saying that Toei obvviously didn't just discover how to make good animation recently.

The thing is, Toei has been a mass production studio for most of its history. They made so many damn shows that their most original and well produced anime simply were entirely forgotten. And the amount of badly animated shows they've produced is much greater than the amount of well produced ones...

My bad, I didn't mean that every long running anime made by Toei is terrible. Sailor Moon is okay, I'll watch GeGeGe no Kitaro one day.

Rather than mass production, it's simply that they've been around for 60 years and have a lot of staff. Being well-established also means that many good animators have worked there, so I'd say the reality is the exact opposite of what Op and you are saying.
If people have forgotten about those anime (or haven't seen them in the first place),that's on them.

Wdym rather than mass production? Every decade they have produced around 30-60 anime, most of which looked poor and outdated even by the standards of past decades when technology and resources in the industry were extremely limited. What part of that doesn't fit the meaning of "mass production"?

Nailing 1 project out of 20 isn't an achievement.

when you have over 100 volumes of the manga it is not hard to become the most sold, especially how its been going for 20 years, the story is bland, probably the same or blander than naruto or hxh. the delusion of one piss fans is so deep rooted in the fact most started the series with the premiere or watched it after finishing naruto not even being aware of better pieces of media, every character is so 2 dimensional it makes demon slayer look like a character study with development akin to LN mushoku tensei, i mean your huge fight scenes look worse than a family guy chicken fight, and they consist of clown fighting other clowns, with the exception of fish people

The animation on this one is the worst out of all arcs in my opinion. I don't like the shiny aspect and they made the Haki look terrible and cheap. Compare that to the ones against Don Chinjao, Doflamingo and Katakuri. It's night and day difference - Clear electros, no flashy seizure bs and epic soundtrack.

Seriously, I don't want to see that animation again in the next arc!

What do I need to explain? More time = more anime. They've managed to stay relevant for so, you would say because their anime looks poor and outdated (as it happens to decades old anime) by "the standards of past decades" (whatever those are), and they only nail 1 project out of 20? Not sure if that makes sense, man.
