Aside the nostalgia thing we all have, everything felt soooo rushed in this first episode. I guess they're planing for a speedrun in just 23 episodes for all the 200+ episodes material? If so, so disappointing.
Not sure how all this would work out , but the vibes were nothing like the original. Even though the animation, colors, even voice actors are great, I think I won't like it if the "directing" continues like this.

Oh man... episode 1 and I'm already finding Lum annoying af. This journey sure will be interesting, huh?

So, Ataru is a womanizer yet his goal is to get married? Huh... but isn't that the thing womanizers fear most?

Also lmfao at the people complaining because this adaptation won't show nipples. Truly hilarious.

I feel somewhat mixed about it!

It looks like the intent behind this show is somewhat of a "Dragon Ball Z Kai" of Urusei Yatsura. Basically cut out only the really good bits of the OG anime and package it into a much much shorter show

And this could be good! A LOT of American/Western anime fans really freak out if you ask them to watch anything from before the year ~2000, so this could really be a gateway drug into the classic 1980s Urusei Yatsura anime and the excellent films with are so commonly looked over by my countrymen.

The difference here is that they aren't using any of the OG anime, it's a fully new anime with a new VA cast and all new animation and songs and everything.

Which is..idk.
No way an anime in 2022 is gonna top the direction of 1980s Oshii (And Beautiful Dreamer) and certainly the production team must have known that coming into this project.
But also releasing the classic animation with a modern cut would have been weird too, I guess..

They probably will skip over Beautiful Dreamer (the high point of the entire Urusei Yatsura series) entirely because of it's length, Takahaki's disdain for it, and because it relies so heavily on it's style that'd be hard to recreate for a modern production.

As far as it's quality, this reboot seems pretty good so far, if a lil fast paced.
The pacing is to be expected because it's more or less a highlights reel of the series

I guess my take is:

This new Urusei Yatsura reboot isn't bad at all. In fact the opening episode was pretty good

but if you are new to the series do yourself a favor and just watch the original series imo.

No disrespect if you're new and enjoy this though.

Same, I knew they were gonna cut shit out cause no way in hell they gonna animate 200+ episodes. But the new one focuses more on trying to eat through as much as possible rather then the jokes which was the main reason I watched it.

Original was super funny, laughed like crazy for some dumb reason every episode. But this one only got a grin out of me and maybe a chuckle

I have not watched the original but I'm definitely gonna watch it because of the author's other works and so far I really liked it. Character designs are amazing. The OP storyboard production by Shingo Yamashita was amazing as expected. Lum is very cute and Uesaka Sumire is doing a great job voicing her. A really good start. Excited about the next one. The ED was cool as well.

I like it more cause it’s way funnier. But I’m probably too biased to form a objective opinion. Give it a go because it’s 100% fucking awesome

It was a nice heart-warming start, the main girl is sweet and amusing, can't say much about the mc yet except that he doesn't sound annoying unlike many many romcom mcs out there
I liked how they didn't go overboard with fanservice here, like, it was there but it was moderate

I never liked him, hated him even. But the show kinda does that on purpose. Whenever he gets in some crazy situation, you kinda root for his downfall slightly and it makes it much more fun.

That was just me tho, idk about others

Ataru shouting out Shinobu's name reminds me of Kamiya as Araragi calling out Shinobu in the monogatari series. If you heard the voice clip out of context, you might've thought they were watching Araragi in his natural habitat.

And the trend of anime remakes continue. Here it is: the Urusei Yatsura remake.

I started Urusei Yatsura (1981) back in 2015. Still watching it to this day lol. It's okay, I guess. Just another episodic comedy show. Was never a big fan of the series and in no rush to finish it. I also never read the manga, so I can't tell how faithful of an adaptation it is. All I know is that they are planning to adapt specific chapters from the manga, instead of adapting all the chapters. Meaning that the anime is going to skip a lot of the chapters of the manga.

Lum is so much hotter in the remake. Apparently, Lum is the first tsundere, according to Wikipedia.

It seems the remake did not update the technology. The show seems to be set around 1978-1981. It did update the artstyle though, which is the artstyle Rumiko Takahashi currently uses. But the 1981 version's artstyle is still closer to the original manga's artstyle.

Enjoyable start so far. The original showed Lum's nipples in the first episode, but the remake didn't, but whatever, the rest of the 1981 version of the anime didn't show any more nudity after episode 1.
I actually like that they didnt update the technology or anything like that. It shows just how faithful David is to the remake at least in my opinion.

Yeah really faithful censoring lum's outfit, with her asscrack showing that they completely eliminated 20+ chapters of jokes which involves said ass crack.

As she uses it to woo the mc over from other women when he's horny.

Gigamecha12 said:
I've watched 79 episodes and a movie of the original anime. There where probably 2-3 scenes with any uncensored nipples in the show so far. It also becomes a lot less focused on ecchi comedy really quick. So all those of you bitchin about it being ruined cause ya can't see a pink patch of skin on Lum's chest either A. Never watched the show to begin with, or B. Are vastly blowing things out of proportion. Ranma 1/2 had WAAAAAY more nudity in it then Urusei Yatsura ever did. Ya might be getting the two mixed up.

As for the concern on pacing. Look, I adore the original. It's a great and fun show! But, especially in the first 20 episodes where they aired 2 short episodes back to back instead of a full length episode? The pacing was EXTREMELY quick.

Thats arguably part of the charm! Everything starts off semi-normal just to go completely off the rails by the end of the episode. David Production has emulated that greatly, and frankly as much as I have a soft spot for the original's look, it does not hold a candle to what they've done here.

Lum was always meant to have multi-colored hair as we see in the Takahashi's colored pages. And now we can finally see it! The fx are great, and the animation is fantastic! Music's good and the voice actors nailed it. Do I like them more then the OG? Nah. But don't mean I dislike their portrayal!

For anyone new to Yatsura, this is a great way to start. And hopefully it'll convince you to give the manga a try as well as maybe the original tv series from the 80's. Don't listen to the strangely horny doomers, watch it for yourself, If it resonates with you, I promise you'll have a good time! Its great to live in a world where Lum, Ataru and the rest of them are relevant again!
Is not muticoloured. Lum's hair is green aquamarine dark green. Depending on the lighting the shade might change but is not made of neon. The colors are awful. The covers are a different issue completely.

I have been a fan of Urusei Yatsura since 1989 when I first saw the series on french television. Since then I got all the original japanese tankoubon (and wide ban) of the manga, many original soundtracks, laserdiscs and dvds, the blurays from discotek and even some original production cels. The first episode of the reboot was quite okay, I love the updated look of Lum, but the other characters look good as well, and the animation has some really neat sakuga scenes here and there, especially in Shingo Yamashita's opening. My main concern is the BGM and the sound effects like lum's flying, which weren't as memorable as in the original. Hopefully it will get better with time. I'm also not a huge fan of the new OP and ED song.

Just some points to clarify some points about what is being discussed here:

1) Even though this is first and foremost a gag-comedy series, people need to have more patience before judging the franchise as a whole since there will be a lot more characters which will flesh out the character dynamics further and further.

2) No, Ataru won't always stay the same idiot as in the fist handful of episodes. I'm pretty sure the new series will also occasionally show his true feelings for Lum (showing his love for her with actions, not with words).

3) Whoever is claiming that the OG had Lum having an asscrack is just trolling. Go watch the original 1981 episode to see that this is completely and utterly nonsense.

4) Lum has never been and will never be a "tsundere". Lum constantly shows her love for her "darling" very openly (aka clingy) instead of being angry all the time and pretending to hate (but secretly loving) him. I have no idea why so many people pretend Lum is a "tsundere". Maybe it's due to wikipedia?

Lum is perfectly cute as she should, I also really like her voice and how she talks, and how colorful everything is, really captures how the manga looks when colored (hell, the ad break eye catch is a recreation of one of the most famous ilustrations of the original and they nailed it).
Oh and the original opening from the 81 anime sneaking in was a great touch.

I don' know... This feels old.

This is well made with good voice acting and excellent OP & ED but whole thing feels too old. There is nothing new here. Everything has been seen like thousand times already in many anime. This might have been revolutionary back in then but it doesn't feel much these days when many anime after it has recycled, refined and processed same concepts over and over again to this day.

It's ridiculous how people who claim "bad animation" are just talking nonsense. Bad animation refers to missing frames in a cut, bad body proportions or incorrect color coding. Nothing of that occurs in this new adaptation.

Also regarding to the modern color choices, it's a re-adaptation. Artistic liberties are there to be placed in a new reimagination of the series. If the director wanted the audience to experience the original colors in a 1:1 ratio it would had been a lot easier to just tell the audience to buy the old episodes in a dvd or bluray bundle.

DavidPro already stated that they are handpicking the episodes to be adapted, they aren't going to re-adapt the whole 195 episodes, so they are already filtering more than just 20+ chapters of asscrack jokes that only matters to the horny. So it's a good thing from a business side afterall.

I won't touch on you're boneheaded remark on the animation. Cause, frankly, must people on this site have zero idea on what even "good animation" means. Its cool you're not into what they presented, and frankly, I don't care all that much. Just this "censorship is bad" crap y'all keep pushing in these forums is just so stupid. Especially when we're talking about Yatsura of all things. WHO CARES if ya don't see a nipple when Lum lost her bra? Thats pretty much the only scene outside of a hot spring episode later on that you see any of that in the original show (unless it changes drasticly past episode 79). Don't paint this extremely false representation of a show to the new viewers. If ya wanna doom about censorship in media, take it somewhere else where its actually relevant.

And yes, I'm very much aware the Lum's hair is green in the anime. But, if you read my post you'd have realized that I mentioned Rumiko Takahashi's COLORED PAGES when I talked about Lum's hair being multicolored. If that doesn't make it clear enough, allow me to rescind that part of my post, and talk about her Illustrations instead. She's always added some extra colors with water color in the base of her hair. And the fact that David Production is bringing that here is a great twist to the original. She looks much more alien and thats great!

Lum is what happens when you give a female pikachu a human personality. I love all the 80's and 90's attention to detail (the rotary telephones were fantastic). I like both the op and the ed (that 3D rendition of Lum is very cool) both in terms of animation and choice of music (seeing Lum singing the OP for instance). About the plot, well, yes, caching a thing that can fly is very hard; one would think that Lum expends some energy flying and giving electric shocks, so one could chase her until exaustion (tho, our protagoinist isn't in peak atletic form either).
The drama of the second half of the episode was good (again, the thing with the telephones) but to me Shinobu's reaction isn't very realistic (it is quite obvius that Lum is behind everything, even if normally it would be Moroboshi's fault for being a womanizer).

Also, I never watched the original but I always felt that I was born too late for it. But I know the characters from an early age, so I always wanted to watch them talk and move.

Damn, this poor guy. First he gets dumped by his girl, then he gets picked to be the savior of the world by competing in a game of tag and if he fails the world will be invaded and he will forever be ridiculed, his mother said she should've never gave birth to him, and now there's some squid alien chick getting in the way of his love life, lmao. At least that squid alien chick is pretty cute!

Well anyways, I've never watched the original show (obviously because i wasn't even born when the original show came out, lol.) but this one seems pretty promising. I got interested in it when i heard that apparently Lum is considered to be one of the pioneers of waifu culture and one of the first ever anime girls to be considered a waifu. I love the art style and how it looks like a mix of an old anime style and a modern anime style, it looks pretty neat. And it felt pretty fun to watch too, definitely a great first episode and I will be looking forward for more. (Though, I will add as other people here have said, the pacing is definitely quite too fast, but I'm fine with it i guess. As long as I still enjoy it.)

Okay so established it pretty well that it's gonna be a comedy which is nice.

MC is funny. He's a teenager being a teenager but seems like he genuinely likes Shinobu.

The intro was ridiculous though, aliens who speak Japanese come to invade but are decent enough that they allow a game of tag to decide if they will really invade or not lmao.

Lum is really cute though. It's both because of her character design and the art style of this which seems like hasn't changed much from the original one, at a glance one can tell this is old anime art style. Lum's VA sounds pretty cute too and it suits Lum. Is Lum Yandere? Whatever but it is funny. It was ridiculous how Lum thought she was being proposed to and then the dad agreed too💀

The OP is such a banger. Can't describe how much I liked it. The visuals, the music. Top tier. Same goes for the ED. Both of the have great visuals. Liked the use of bright colours in both OP and ED. ED song is a banger too.

I really want to see some cute Lum moments and hopefully some romantic moments between Lum and our MC. I mean it's already clear who the best girl is.

5/5. Wouldn't have watched this anime anytime soon if there wasn't a remake (keeping in mind 190 episode). I'm gald that this got a remake so I can at least watch this weekly. Looking forward to next episode.

DavidPro already stated that they are handpicking the episodes to be adapted, they aren't going to re-adapt the whole 195 episodes, so they are already filtering more than just 20+ chapters of asscrack jokes that only matters to the horny. So it's a good thing from a business side afterall.

By bad animation I am refering to stuff like how the mouth of ataru is animated

Uhhhhh, I have no clue what happened and my instincts tell me I'm better off not knowing. Colour palette is good, and so is the massive fucking Monogatari reference sitting right there in the remake of a series older than Mono.

Otherwise, like @Gigamecha12 and I stated you know jack about what good and bad animation stands for.
