This looked great and imo, Lum made a wonderful impression with her character debut in this remake.

I love the character chemistry so far too and the colorful chereography. They kinda made Ataru look like a fool in this episode but that's what I find him most amusing so far. Great start. That ending was hilarious.

The Living Legend that is Rumiko Takahashi's first ever manga, rebooted EXACTLY 41 years to the day the OG 1981 anime adaptation started (October 14), paired with DavidPro who's a great fit for a veteran studio.

The OP and ED by the same artist, OP is fine, but the ED is straight fire.

Ataru Moroboshi embodies the epitome of the modern rom-com tropes being a bad-luck rate womanizer (that was fresh back in the 1980s), and Lum holds the record for being the first-ever "otaku waifu".

The game of tag between human and Oni for humanity's sake for the fate of Earth being invaded in 10 days, and Ataru tries his best to tag the flying Lum who can alsoo control electricity, which thanks to a lucky pervert moment, he managed to save the Earth. But in a spirit of forgetfulness, his marriage proposal to his long-time childhood friend Shinobu...became one towards Lum instead, clinching her horns as a sign of acceptance.

And yelp, Ataru's life doesn't get better being the womanizer he is, with Lum being possessive of him while Shinobu gets the flack for being the 3rd party in this sudden proposal of a love triangle. This is gonna get messy, BUT GOOD.

I'd thought that Hiroshi Kamiya did good being Ataru, but it's Sumire Uesaka being Lum that holds the most appeal (as she did Nagatoro before). And since this is David Production, it certainly has the JoJo feels when it comes to its outlandish styling.

A legendary series revisited, and this is already looking great.
And while this will not adapt the entire manga, think of this as an "All Stars" version where certain chapters and arcs will be adapted.

God everything about this premiere was wacky. You can guess how old-school the source is when things start straight up with a bitch slap just because main Ataru was gawking at some other girl. The sudden alien invasion and then that tag play, a tag play for the future of this planet lol. Things were abrupt but they were fun. Good for Ataru I guess with that marriage misunderstanding, it is with Lum after all( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

David pro on a roll from the first episode, this being four-cour certainly a big win then.

Lol this is really fun and as dumb as before, that contest to save the earth from the aliens and Ataru winning by removing Lamu's bra xD But in the end he got the wrong girl and Lamu is jealous of him wanting Shinobu, of course expect everything to be destructed xD Anyway I like how they kept the older feeling of the style by updating it, OP and ED look good as well, it's gonna be funny for sure.

I have not watched the original but I'm definitely gonna watch it because of the author's other works and so far I really liked it. Character designs are amazing. The OP storyboard production by Shingo Yamashita was amazing as expected. Lum is very cute and Uesaka Sumire is doing a great job voicing her. A really good start. Excited about the next one. The ED was cool as well.

Hey that was good! A nice way to modernize it for a new audience. As expected, they'll tone down the maturity quite a bit. The new voices are on point, too.
I'd still recommend for everyone to watch the old series. Early 80s aesthetics rules

"For its time" is a horrible argument. Mobile phones weighing over a kilo with two hours of battery life was good for its time in the early 90s, why should anyone care now?

Also, these color palettes are yum.

I haven't watched the original so I started watching this completely unaware of what to expect
It was a nice heart-warming start, the main girl is sweet and amusing, can't say much about the mc yet except that he doesn't sound annoying unlike many many romcom mcs out there
I liked how they didn't go overboard with fanservice here, like, it was there but it was moderate

LOVED this OP and ED! I'm really enjoying the cast's renditions of the cast; hearing Toshio Furukawa back in any capacity was pretty nice, and Maaya Uchida's Shinobu is PERFECT. I definitely appreciate hearing Lum's Love Song as a leitmotif.

Some of their artistic choices were very interesting; having Lum's surveillance technology resemble a modern day video call gave me a chuckle, and if they go with this approach for most of the Sci-Fi aspects in the series, I'd be perfectly okay with it.

Any nudity so far, in the original lum was half naked for over the whole day.

Also no to mention her original design had a butt crack over her bikini bottom which she showed many times to ataru in the manga to woo him from other women when he went cheating.

Here it's completely missing so we might not even get those chapters adapted.

Very colourful, bombastic, and wacky. The love triangle bits got quite repetitive as this went along, but it was quite fun nonetheless. I haven't watched the original, so I don't know what to expect, but this was a solid enough premiere to keep me interested at the very least.

as a big fan of the OG uruyatsu, i was pretty disappointed in this episode.

- i wasn't crazy about sumire uesaka's performance as lum, though i've liked her work in the past; fumi hirano's version of lum was just so iconic that it's going to take a lot of getting used to for me to appreciate uesaka in the role.
- the OP was iffy. i liked that it was sort of a reiwa-era otaku culture redux of the kind of OPs from the showa anime, but i wasn't crazy about the song and i need more time to appreciate the choreography of it.

some positives:

+ toshio furukawa as ataru's dad was great. very much looking forward to hearing fumi hirano as lum's mom as well.
+ i have a bias toward shinobu, despite lum being the true icon of the series, and i was very happy with her shinobu's portrayal here! maaya uchida was a very cute shinobu and shots like shinobu in the wedding dress or how she looked in the eyecatch were some of the most memorable parts of the episode.
+ the color palette was good! i still prefer the creamy pastels of the showa anime, but this was definitely more appealing to me color-wise than most new anime i see.

the biggest thing i need to keep in mind is that even the old anime adaptation had to grow on me; i wasn't head-over-heels for the 1981 show at first either.

I couldn't really get used to the voice cast. I usually really like these voice actors, but they just didn't come close to the original ones. Censoring the nipples was pretty much as expected, but a shame nonetheless. I guess we can say goodbye to a possible Ranma remake. Even if they do it, it's going to be trash. Having said that, Urusei Yatsura was not that lewd to begin with so this doesn't impact the series that much. The worst offenses were the absolutely godawful BGM that made me want to smash my speakers, as well as the retardedly loud and obnoxious (no pun intended) opening and ending songs. Really bad compared to the funky songs of the 80s anime, but I'm sure they'll be somehow popular among the young new viewership.
I don't understand why they cranked the colors up to 9000, but I hate it. It's like how Samsung uses those AMOLED displays everywhere because muh super bright colors. The pacing was fucking insane and I can't help but feel the comedic timing was all kinds of fucked.

All in all, it was "alright", if not compared to the old 80s anime.

This is a love letter to the otaku culture since the 80's which was basically kicked off by Urusei Yatsura itself. Loved it!

I've been waiting so long for this and I'm glad to say the wait has been worth it. I am going to miss the old voice actors for sure but the new actors actually did a great job. Glad to see the only real worry I had since the beginning isn't really that big of a deal. I can get used to the new voice acting. If I didn't know Ataru's OG voice actor voiced Ataru's dad here I probably wouldn't be able to tell.

David Production didn't need to go so hard with the OP but they did. Featuring references from Urusei Yatsura manga to even the obscure video games. From old to new. It's a celebration of otaku culture. The ED is a bit basic, visually speaking. But it might grow on me.

I don't know why the OP showed smartphones in Ataru's dream but in the actual episode, they were using old CRTs and telephones like it was the 80's. Logic never really made sense in Urusei Yatsura anyway so I guess it's not a big deal.

The pacing of the series is a bit different but that was expected considering it adapted chapter 1 and went straight to chapter 5. Imo, the best part of Urusei Yatsura has always been the latter episodes so I don't mind if it rushes the story a little bit.

I don't understand the criticism about the lack of nipples. Such a strange thing to complain about. What did you expect from a PG-13 anime made in 2022? Standards change. And nudity doesn't make or break Urusei Yatsura. There was barely any nudity in the original. And one of the most interesting parts about Lum is when she wears human clothes instead of her bikini.

What the first episodes of Urusei Yatsura did in 1981 were impressive but in terms of production value, they were obviously rushed. David Production did a great job with the animation. Hope the quality keeps up.

Overall it's a great Remake that I think both the new generation and the nostalgic old generation can enjoy.

I get why it's faster with this new rendition, but this whole episode felt too fast for me from even the first couple minutes and the introduction. I wasn't a huge fan of this series nor Rumiko Takahashi's works in general, but this adaptation felt rough and awkward to me to watch. The colors are nice and pop well but the animation could've been better, feels lacking at times. I do like the energy present though here somewhat, this definitely has that old-school freshness to it mixed with the modern style and presentation that makes it somewhat standout from the rest of the anime airing this season but I don't think that's enough for me to call this a success of a premiere to be honest.

Also, Hiroshi Kamiya's a great voice actor that's done a lot of roles real justice, but this might be one of my least favorite performances I've heard from him in a while. Ataru is a bit of a brat but man was I annoyed just hearing his voice in this episode. That didn't help with my enjoyment factor with this episode to go alongside the pacing issues.

So we got another typical Rumiko comedy, where main boy have girl that he loves, and there is girl that loves him. Plus typical stupid girl, that know that boy don't love other girl, but when she sees him with her, she scream, thor things, or hit him, without asking. You have seen pne Rumiko title, it's like you have seen all of them.

Where in the hell is it cheap? This looks like nothing but cheap, the animation was as smooth as butter and the color palette is amazing. I understand prefering the original over this but if there's one thing this one got right is that the animation and production value is very, very good.

Damn, that pacing was breakneck. But so was the original's, so can't complain about that too much I suppose.

The art style and colour choices are amazing! And the op and ed are also absolute bangers.

Will definitely give it a few more episodes, since this one left me a bit eh. May just be one of those shows that needs to grow on me or find its footing more, or something. Looking forward to more in any case! :)

For those who may be wondering about the show moving on, if it's anything like the tone of the original, the humor tends to be less focused on ecchi and more on the inherent absurdity of numerous situations caused by the cast, along with everyone taking the piss out of Ataru, even when something is not his fault (can you blame them? He's not exactly the most-likeable guy).

It's a different age in anime. We're a long way from 1981, and this reboot of Urusei Yatsura shows it. Some things are recognizably similar, but some things are extremely different. I doubt the reboot was supposed to be completely similar to the original, but it's impossible to not compare the two. And the original is better in every way so far. We'll see if it grows on me, but it didn't make a good first impression.

The pace is so fast that I've to check the manga if it's just this remake's fault. Turn out this episode only adapt two chapters of manga (chapter 1 and 5, skipping 2-3-4), which is pretty standard, if not a little bit low compare to other anime adaptation. So the manga has already a fast, very fast pace...

That was a pretty good first episode. I like how they readapted the first chapter by making some plot elements closer to the manga than the OG anime was, while still not making completely 1:1 to it. The animation was on point for the most part, and the seiyus did a great job recreating the general feel the OG ones did.

My biggest gripe with this first episode though is that the fact they choose to adapt one or my least favorite chapters in the series for the second portion of it. I always thought that one was just needlessly brutal to Ataru, considering he just wanted to see his girlfriend there.

Not necessarily a huge fan of the OP and ED songs (The songs in the original anime just can’t be surpassed, lol), but the visuals in them were pretty great. Love all of the extra fanservice in the opening in particular.

Anyways, I enjoyed that first episode quite a bit even despite the second half. Definitely looking forward to the next one, especially since it’s adapting the yellow ribbon chapter.
