If you watch a series but skip the filler, can you really mark it as complete? WHat's your opinion on this?

Let's say someone's watching a long running series, something with a decent amount of filler. They skip the filler and just focus on the canon episodes. Can you say they truly completed it?

Or is it only completed if you watch 100% of the episodes.

Wow, 2 hours and no responses. Well honestly IMO I don't think you completed it. When you mark it as completed on MAL it fills in all the episodes. The only exception to this is if It's a recap because that's not really a unique episode. And if you can't handle a few fillers then you don't like the show that much so shouldn't complete it anyway. But then again I might be completely biased since I've never seen some of the huge shows with many fillers.

Nobody cares what you mark as complete, it's "myanimelist" and that means you make the rules. Not even the MAL team cares, completely unrealistic lists are not removed. It's your party and you cry if you want to.

Not gonna add Naruto or Bleach to my list unless I watch all the filler.... said no one ever.

Preferably it would be called out somewhere on the profile/tags, but I think it's reasonable to skip if you really don't care about completionism.

Put whatever you want on your list, I use the plan to watch section in a completely different way from how the site is intended to be used, and my dropped list is used for on hold shows that I might come back to, there are no rules to your own personal list.

I put some of my childhood anime (anime I watched in TV) in my complete list if I watched most episodes of it, especially the end.
I think it's acceptable, moreover when we talk about skipping only fillers.

But I skipped the entire second half of Soul Eater and Akame ga Kill for example and switched to manga because they are going to different route/gecko ending, and I put them on my dropped list instead.

I always watches fillers, so if I ever skip one I wouldn't mark the show as completed I would mark it as on-hold or dropped.

Filler will make the anime boring for you.
Its better to skip the fillers and add the anime in your completed list

Naruto became boring for me because I watched all the fillers because at that time I didn't knew about fillers

Fillers are there to either be watched or skipped. Fillers aren't canon which means the original author had nothing to do with it therefore it's allowed to be skipped… I think

The two main series that you need to worry about filler is Bleach and Naruto and even people who are fans of those anime say it's fine to skip the filler and most even advice it.

The only exception is Gintama and if you don't watch every single episode including the opening and ending every single time at least 4 times, you haven't seen it at all.

The fillers only mattered when the anime was airing. Fillers most of the time contribute nothing to the story other than to allow the mangakas to progress the manga's storyline ahead of the anime. Filler lists are readily available. So you can sift out the filler episodes without feeling like the story is growing stale. I find it funny how the main obstacle for people getting into Naruto is the amount of filler or episodes it has. But since it finished airing a long time ago, you can easily look up a filler list. Besides, it's not as long as One Piece which is in the thousands and keeps on going.

I get that, but i'm asking about if you'd consider it complete if you skip the filler.

I'm skipping all the filler in Bleach and I don't regret it. I know for sure I would've gotten tired of the anime very quickly knowing that 45% of the entire anime is filler. I'm not about to watch over 100 episodes of that ^^

If it's not important to the original storyline and doesn't affect anything if I skip it, I'm not gonna watch it haha. I only have so much time and patience for stuff like that and I wanna enjoy what I watch!

It's not complete if you don't watch all of the episodes.

You can mark it as whatever, but there is content that is available that you have not seen and therefore you haven't completed it.

I watch the fillers for some shows, but refuse to watch the fillers for others.

For example, right now im watching Detective conan, and while I do skip some filler episodes if im not feeling the plotline, I do watch most of them. I do however refuse to watch long streaks of filler only content.

I skipped almost all of the Naruto Shippuuden filler arcs that happened during the final arc of the canon story, because what felt like 20~30 episodes of filler after every 5~10 episodes of canon was just too much. Same thing with Bleach. That show actually really messed up some character arcs and world building because it tried to present the filler arcs as something fitting in the actual canon story line of the series. Watching Ichigo´s progress as a character and shinigami alike reset to 0 every other arc just felt draining.

on the other hand, i am watching Boruto without skipping, but thats more something like morbid curiosity for how badly they can fuck the legacy of the original Boruto´s dad series
It's okay to smirk

Yes. If it doesn't further the main story or have any significant impact on the characters (pretty much the very definition of a filler arc) then it might as well not be there anyway. You should at least try watching the filler arcs in any given show before you decide to skip them though. Some of them aren't bad.

I'd personally only consider skipping filler in really long shounen battle series though.

Well, I wouldn't watch a few cannon episodes in a mostly filler show and then call it complete, but I think long running shonen shows with filler arcs are a different story, if you watch everything that covers the main story line, then it's really not important whether you completed the filler that only serves as, well.... filler.

"Filler" is part of the show. You didn't watch it, ergo you didn't watch part of the show, ergo you didn't complete the show. If you can't handle it with all the "filler," then it's a bad show anyway.

If you took that to the extreme, you could complete anything just by watching 1 second of it, and claim everything is a 10/10, since you can just ignore all the bad parts.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

Nah,by skipping fillers you can mark the anime as complete bkz they aren't related to actuall story plus they can affect your enjoyment on the show.

I put some shows as completed (Pokemon series, YGO, stuff like that), although I watched like half or 3/4 of it, because I don't want them in my on hold-list for eternity.

Also, it's your list. Who cares and even if someone cares, it's not your problem.

normally i'd say "watch the fillers you coward!" but i make an exception for season 2 of haruhi suzumiya. since the endless eight episodes are, by design, pretty much the same episode eight times in a row, if you watch at least two of them, you've seen them all so really you didn't skip anything

Well fillers are ust fillers. No one cares about fillers. So skipping or watching them wouldn't make any difference. Though, it can be problem for people who really want their list to be precisely calculated. And am definitely NOT one of them.

Skipping fillers is inevitable. If there's only a few of them that people skipped, I don't mind if they say they completed it. If there are a bunch of them here and there though, I still can accept that they completed it but there might be a bit of unsatisfaction within me. Just a personal thing.

Really? I didn't noticed what I was watching are actually a filler. Maybe back then my head was just filled with wishing to watch Naruto that I just find all acceptable 😅

Wise words. Gintama is basically a sitcom. The term "filler" does not exist in a sitcom 😂

I usually don't want to skip anything so I watch the fillers just at 2x speed so I can quickly get back to the canon material, but as others have said, it's your list, at least I'm not calling people who haven't watched certain episodes of a series, but still mark it as a complete, cheaters ^^

Same here as I'm a completionist of sort and just try to enjoy the fillers for what it is. I don't really care if other skip fillers or not and mark as completed as it's their list and they can do whatever they want with it.

I don't know.

I'll say this, there are a LOT of anime where a LOT of unimportant crap happens that does not affect the story at all.

I think, if the stuff you skip, has no impact, then it shouldn't matter. Its like having friends, you don't need to know EVERYTHING about them to call them a friend.
