I haven't really thought about it myself. I'm more curious about what you all will answer, and hopefully why.

I don't like how 60s anime look and I think 2010s character designs are boring.
I also don't like how a lot of 2000s anime look but that's mostly a technical thing (digital TV production sucked then) and not a design thing.

i mean, the 2000s set the stereotype for your "generic" anime art style.
The 2010s seem more varied, while the 90s is "semi-realistic", at least for me, because the GTO characters actually look realistic in terms of facial expressions even if most are exaggerated

I'd say the 2020s so far. It's definitely shaping up as the ugliest-looking anime era.

yuu yuu hakusho is “below 2005” with a good art style + a battle shounen, maybe check it out :)

ot: a lot of the newer art styles look very similar and bland so now i guess

Whenever the moe boom happened, like mid 2000s. CGDCT became a thing and people somehow find the big ass eyes cute. Name dropping one series, the most memorable one was Clannad S1. My buddy somehow was obsessed with it but I can’t stand looking at the characters for another ep even at a young age.

Totally agree. Especially the continued overuse of digital effects and digital coloring like like what was used in Asterisk War, Gamers, Irregular at Magic High School, Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun to name a few from recent memory.
No Game No Life is the only one to use this style that didn't totally offend me.

The 60’s definitely. I wouldn’t exactly call it ugly, but more like “boring.” It’s the most boring looking out of all the eras. The best-looking in my opinion, would be the 80’s and 90’s, particularly the 90’s.

the 2010s and 2020s but it's not like it's unwatchable, it's just that it's bland and full of pictures when they should've drawn more like in the good ol' 80s. the 60s can't be bad when we have tatsunoko pro shows. If I had to make a top:
80s > 90s > 2000s > 70s > 60s > 2020s > 2010s

The average 90s-early 2000s art style is bland and boring. To make things clear: NGE, Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are fine, Escaflowne and 12 Kingdoms aren't.

Before and after that are usually better.

... Can't see a difference between Trigun and Escaflowne in terms of art style. In terms of animation Trigun definitely loses, the animation is dreadful.

Not that I'm offended, I like Trigun and disliked Escaflowne, but I'm genuinely confused at what kind of differences you see in terms of art style between the two... Escaflowne's bad guy is an almost perfect twin of Vash...

That late 2000s/early 2010s super-deformed, super-low detail style, you know the one I'm talking about. That said, nowadays' stuff isn't too easy on the eyes either.

In general it's just been careening down since the mid-90s. Shame that the eras of really decent art is long past.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

The 2000s Clannad-style that was seen in a lot of other anime too. They look like their eyes are kinda melting out of their face and I just can't ... also all of these romance-drama with artstyles like these got incredibly annoying female characters.

It's not only that they are too big and that there is almost no white from the eye. The lower eyelid is far too inclined, when it shouldn't be.

Also some 90s and art styles from old shoujos.
What is this ...

A lot of the stuff from the 70s and 80s looks too cartoony for my liking.

Anime: 80s / 90s > 2000s > early 2010s > 70s > 60s > current
Manga: 80s > 70s > 90s > 2000s > 60s > 2010s > current
VN: 2000s / 90s > 2010s > current
Games (anime style): 90s > 2000s > 2010s / current

Current = last 3-4 years.

After watching some clips of Trigun I can say that I like some character designs and dislike some others, but at least it's brighter than Escaflowne.

I know that quite a few people dislike the brightness of recent anime and prefer the dark atmosphere of older stuff; it's just a matter of personal taste.

When they decided moe and digital art were the future of the anime industry at basically the same time. Early-mid 2000s? Digital arts not bad per se, but they didn't really quite seem to have the hang of it for a while.

As a whole, any of the eras after the 90s. The switch to more digital art caused colour palettes to either become more bland or less natural in tones (eg. compare the colouring of the Dragon Ball anime in its original run to the more plastic-looking DB products after the 2000s) and far too many series were released without a distinctive nature to their art style.

Oh, then I can definitely agree that Escaflowne is often way too dark, adn trigun much brighter. I think it's more a matter of stupid choice from the director than art style, but we agree.

There's always the good old joke:
"What's the darkest anime you've seen?
-Gasaraki, I had to turn the gamma all the way up."

The 2010s/2020s generic ranobe/harem/romcom style will forever be the worst style in the industry so far. So bland with no effort in anything. They all look the same and pander yo the lowest common denominator. On the other hand, 2000s and the 90s were by far the best stylistically. More effort, passion and actual soul rather than looking like mass produced garbage.

i actually cant believe it, how was the sound design and storytelling so complex? in such a short animation they tackled the idea of freedom itself and if us as humans in society are truly free. And the sound design, dear god its an insult to call anything that released after this masterpiece an "anime".

2000s to 2010s. Most anime characters were drawn similar specially female characters.

But if we talk about when full made CGI 3D animes introduced, thats the worst art style of the era and we are in it.

Late 2010s and right now honestly. It just looks messy and sketchy compared to the simple yet clean (is the way that you're making me feeeel toniiiiight) lineart and shading of decades past. I also dislike the duller colors that are used. This even applies to illustrations, not just animation. Compare Atelier Ryza to Atelier Rorona, Ryza looks very sketchy and messy in comparison.

And just to prove I don't necessarily think older is better: 90s is probably the most hit or miss era of them all. For every Cardcaptor Sakura you had something as hideous as Saber Marionette J. :P Also the 70s was that sort of awkward transition period between the simple cartoony designs of the 60s and the more detailed modern "anime" art style. It's kinda like the awkward puberty years of anime.

Not they but he. A single person animated it in his own studio.

Also those late-60s eyes are still unmatched. There was a thread about it here too.

Whoever made that comparison must really hate the 90s tbh. Only one which is poorly framed, only fantasy-colored hair, and the artstyle is... early 90s? I'd have picked something that looked more like NGE to represent the 90s.

tho to be fair if they're all taken from actual anime (doubt for the 70s one) then the 90s shred in terms of animation. Technically it's def the hardest of the 6 to pull of. More detail, more shades, etc...

This era is the worst, followed by the 2010s and then the 2000s.

While the 2000s aren't quite as bad as the 2010s and 2020s character design wise, many works suffered from "grey face syndrome," where characters' faces were grey or white in color, rather than any normal skin tone. This was a result of early digipaint, where ill choices were made in painting skin tones.
