Why do some people disable profile comments?

Some people here disable their profile comments. Some even go so far as to disable private messages and / or friend requests.

I know that this is their prerogative and there are many ways to use MAL. First and foremost it is a site we use to track what we are watching, look for new shows and perhaps read a review or leave a review for others.

But there is also a social aspect. I get that alot of us are introverted and are private about who we choose to interact with. I have the drawbridge pulled up too with alot of people outside of MAL.

But I do wonder, why is it that some have decided to limit their social activity to such an extent that a person can't even say hello to them and ask if they are alright? I would rather leave the option there for people to leave a message. Even if I don't respond right away or even never respond at all. I know that, at one point in time, this person decided to reach out to me for one reason or another. Somebody knows that I exist and cared enough to try to interact with me. For me that is reason enough to leave all channels open on MAL.

So those of you who have decided not to; is it because you've had a negative experience? Do you just not care to talk to other anime fans at all? Perhaps you are really busy and want to streamline your use of this site with no distraction? I am curious to know.

Also, to those of you who don't disable profile comments - do you ever delete comments that people leave? I don't delete comments. Even if somebody leaves me a negative comment I let it sit there. For me it is a piece of history. You can't change the past.

They want to look mysterious because they think it's cool. Same people also don't use capital letters in the beginning of sentences. Not sure why.

Just general preferences I guess, same thing happens on other apps I've been on.

I've deleted a couple of comments from back in the day since my ideals now don't agree with what I said back then but I gave up because it was too much to get rid of

i disabled friend request because its too tiring to accept all of them everyday

i disabled private messages because at times i get random messages like political arguments lol im not that articulate in the first place to keep up with lengthy arguments like that

i temporarily disabled my profile comments since a certain user keeps bugging me there but now i think he is banned? maybe some user reported him i got no idea

I disabled too friend request cuz I don't want random friend requests from random strangers. I only accept those from people whom I talk with and keep in touch. I don't add nor accept random people in my list just to grow my collection of people. I am a quality over quantity type of person.
I don't disable profile comms or PMs.

some people just want privacy, like you said they just want to use it to track what they watch, maybe they don't want getting notifications 24/7

I think it's totally fine disabling everything if you just use the site for listing stuff. I probably should've done that for the first few years i joined since that's all i used the site for and wasn't too interested in socialising. If you go out into the forums pretty regularly, i think you should have comments and/or PM's open at least.

Some people just don't care about the social aspect of this site. I have friend requests disabled so I don't have to worry about notifications from people who have nothing better to do than to collect friends. I do not disable my comments but I do delete them. It just make my profile look cleaner.

I kind of think of it in the same vein as when someone disables youtube comments on videos.Simple answer is that the person probably had bad experiences in the past with people so they would rather build a wall around themselves that people can't trespass through,as to avoid criticism completely wether it would be constructive or not.

I dunno about them but I'm quite fond of having my comments open which helps me converse with all kinds of folk. Friend requests on the other side I'm thinking of disabling because I'm getting sick and tired of getting them from third grade mongrels. One even tried to recruit me into his world conquering army. I want none of that because it will be my army that conquers this hell-hole.

I don’t really respond or talk to people much, so when they start wanting to chat with me I don’t really chat much. Makes me feel bad when they do so sometimes I feel like disabling it (but I don’t).

Because maybe they don't wish to talk to random strangers and just want to enjoy their peace on this already cancerous page. I 've actually been thinking about doing that as well but nah I just ignore the ones I don't want to interact with.

Interesting that you say that because the other day I saw someone had like 14 posts but they have quite a few friends and have been on the forum for years. I asked why do few forum posts and if they just hang out in clubs or something because the posts to friends ratio doesn’t add up. Well they told me that they once posted into the wrong forum and people seemed to make a huge deal out of it. So much so that this person felt like they were better off not posting at all. I told them that it really wasn’t a big deal and that we all make silly little mistakes. He told me I had just made his day.

I guess It's kind of understandable because people can be really shitty at times.Because of bad experiences you end up overthinking and double checking more and more before posting as to not get insulted on,and in the end you just end up giving up and not posting at all.

Forums is like the congress, so at least in their profile -- their home -- they'd be able to find peace with doors locked, so those guys from Jehovah's Witness wouldn't bother anymore knocking for the 144,000th time, since they're already affiliated to the Armenian Apostolic Church where they found their salvation, and we might as well respect that if that's the religion they chose for themselves.

I leave them open, but I'm honestly horrific at responding to them. I've always preferred talking to people on things like MSN, Skype, Discord. Comments on a website can be a real pain because the conversations usually progress slow enough for me to lose all interest in them.

There were too many creepy guys that kept on trying to talk to me so I set it to PMs only if friends. I really don't have the time to have friendships on MAL anymore. I have my own adult life to attend to.

Second reason is harassment. It's very easy to make fake accounts on MAL to use to harass others. I used to get a lot of racist and sexist comments. I'm used to it since most of this site are incels and rats living in their mom's basements but yeah.

I much prefer Discord like the above poster to communicate with friends. Profile comments are a dread.

I didn't read all that but I used to disable comments because I used to get people annoying me by asking me why I watch anime if my mean score is so low and because people would criticize my favorites but when I defend them they either never respond or keep repeating the same points I debunked. Those two and because of the racism in this site aswell.
The word elitist is stupid since it's just used by people who can't defend their favorite shows and use it on people who criticize their favorite shows.

Wow people were being racist to you guys? I’ve only been active on the forums for three months. I have pictures on my profile. So far nobody has shown any racism towards me so I guess I have been lucky so far. Also I’m sure you did get some creepy comments but I couldn’t help but smile to myself a bit there. If a woman gets attention from a guy she doesn’t like then he is creepy. But if another guy that she actually likes does the same thing it isn’t considered creepy. In any case I think it is good that you made it PMs for friends only. You already have a whole lot of friends to meet all of your MAL social needs. But if you were to have it open to anyone I think having the profile comments enabled but the PMs disabled would be better because everyone can see the creepy comment on the profile and a person is probably less likely to be creepy when they know what they are saying is public.

@tropisch wow advertising on your profile wall? You must get a lot of traffic to your page or something because I don’t see why it would be worth it for somebody to even think to do that. What are they on even?

@ballistikjuice it almost sounds like you are looking for your twin. Or maybe soulmate or something.

@usagi we are opposite. The slow pace is perfect for me. Those other places are so fast it’s like twitch chat. I can’t keep up with what was said just a few minutes ago never mind what was said overnight. I’m glad that we have so many different ways of communicating with people though. They each have their uses and their moments to shine for various reasons.

@konradikon that’s a really interesting way of putting it. I like the way that your mind works.

@luchse so you are the pervy version of Mustang lol. The uniform sounds like it would be hot. Not sure if all of your people would be able to rock it though.

@missaliensan yeah that makes sense.

@twoego can’t really blame you. People really get under my skin too irl.

@blakexekalb you have got to change that name. I never want to type that name into my phone again. How tedious. My apologies if it means something really profound to you. Anyway, I was going to say don’t feel bad lol. I’m really not big on small talk either. Are you also an INTJ?

@savasvania fair point.

Yes I'm Chinese so I had some racist slurs (ch*nk) thrown at me and rice jokes (with malicious intent). Normally, race jokes are OK if we're friends but they said shit to me with the intention of hurting me.

"But if another guy that she actually likes does the same thing it isn’t considered creepy." I don't really want any attention here, not that type of attention at least. It's creepy if you don't know me and try to hit on me.

People write reviews on this site. Other people read them and then may harass the reviewer if they don't agree. I've seen lots of people's profiles with lots of harassment just because of a review. I really don't blame them for feeling the need for peace...that's just my observations.

Well I personally won't try to hit on you. And if anybody on this forum thinks I am hitting on them I'm not really being serious. I mean, I could build a new harem on MAL just for fun but I'm getting married this year and I've actually had real life harems so I don't need any sort of emotional intimate relationship online.
In a broader sense though - men are supposed to hit on strangers. I don't know why this is suddenly seen a creepy thing. A guy is supposed to show interest and then the girl is supposed to choose a mate out of all of her potential suitors. Just like in the animal kingdom.

People can get quite nasty on here so if you do something that is controversial you can get a lot of people writing shitty messages on your profile. Take a look at people who wrote reviews with low scores on highly rated anime and you’ll see some hate comments on their profile, especially when it’s about the more popular anime.

No, that's fucking creepy, if you don't know someone, try to mind your own business and they hit on you in the train or anywhere, while you just sit there. Luckily it happened rarely to me and I witnessed it rarely too. At least the way most are doing it.
There might be women that need validation from a stranger but eeh no.

Messages are better, because you don't need to think so much about how much you could talk about this and that stuff etc. It's uncomfortable, if people could read a personal discussion between two people.

I’ve never checked that out but I will take a look now when I have some time. Nobody deserves that. Can anything be done about it? It would be a shame if nobody wrote reviews for fear of harassment. I wrote a passionate review about Little Witch Academia and it was the review mods who removed it. They said I went on too many tangents. Well excuse me for trying to put some feeling into it and make some comparisons.
@maneki-mew fair enough. Being rejected by women like you who think it is creepy is all part of the game. Every man who goes for a woman must risk rejection. Unless he is a high status male. A high status male doesn’t need to approach women because they willingly throw themselves at him. Picture a live concert.

Expensive though no? Are they all premium accounts? In my school days I often made several tracks per day aswell. Full songs featuring several artists could take a bit longer. Sometimes would complete a full song in a day. Unfortunately one day my external hard drive crashed and I had everything on there. This was back in 2009 I think. Then I didn’t make anything again until last year. And I’m working full time now and juggling my other hobbies so I’m taking my time to make new stuff.

Tell me, how did you get into it? Let’s talk on our profiles.
