You know what I'm talking about. That initial phase that follows after you find or get into anime, where you think everything from Japan is THE BEST, and you bash your own culture because it can't compete to the glorious Nippon way! You do eventually grow out of it, and realize in embarrassment what a cringey little kid you were, or you don't.

So ... how was it? Did you have one? Are you still living in one? How did others react to it? Did you have a forceful reawakening, or did it go away by itself?

I've personally never felt that way. Maybe about video games like 10 years ago, but nothing to do with another country.

I did view Japan in a better light than my own country but not as the best one.
I admire some aspects of their culture but not everything should be glorified since even Japan has it's flaws.

It's better this way.
A little lonelier,
but better.

Quite a strange thing you talk about. That phase never happened to me. If anything, I do recall being rather addicted to anime at one point back when I was a young teenager.

Climbing out of the hole of escapism took two years, give or take. Getting into undergrad college, living all by yourself, etc etc kicked me out of it. In post-grad college, you barely have time to indulge yourself in escapism. You have other kinds of pressures you need to deal with, and it's enough to jolt someone into taking corrective action.

I still prefer JRPG over western games (except L4D2, oh HL's nice too!), does that count? Personally, my eyes are way too accustomed for anime.

I never had that. For quite a while after I got into anime I still watched more western stuff than anime and even when that balance turned around I never once thought any worse of western media, in fact I always watched some western stuff and many of my western favorites I would score alongside my 10s and 9s on MAL if I were to compare them.

And I never really thought japanese culture/society was that great. I love Shintoism and the whole kami worldview, but other than that I am glad I'm not born in Japan. I would have probably killed myself if I was born in that society cause its values are almost completely opposite to my individualism. So I never idealized or glorified japan as a whole, I always saw it as a country with values that don't align with mine very much at all. I like anime because in many ways it does not represent japanese traditional values.
I probably regret this post by now.

I just hate people in my country (typical/common ones) in general. Country probably as well for various reasons.

I do like a lot of things in Japan and what are made in Japan. But there also other countries that have traits I rather enjoy.

but eh... life is cancer in general. So thankful to Anime as it's something that kinda has pulled me through most of shit in life.

Dude, if you were born there you wouldn't have your current set of values, so I doubt you would kill yourself over that, hypothetically speaking.

I don't think I had such a phase. Back when I discovered anime I had a short phase where I was more obsessed with anime and in general Japanese things than now, but never to the weaboo level.

Well maybe but japan does have high suicide rates for a reason so even the people born there do seem to not be able to handle their constraining values and society and family in many cases. It's a place that breeds unhappiness for people that don't fit in and I always had a personality that didn't fit in very well, no matter where. Where I grew up that wasn't a big deal and I could easily carve out my own niche while growing up and afterwards, but in Japan I'm not sure it would have ended that well. They don't have much pity for people who don't fit in. They even blame the bullied kids instead of the bullies in many cases because it's their fault for not being able to fit in and not get bullied.

But in any case the point isn't to speculate on hypotheticals, the point was that from my current perspective I never found anything desirable about japan in terms of their society, values and norms so I never developed the idealization or glorification of that country that OP is talking about and that I frequently see in a lot of anime fans. I just used a hyperbolic way to express that.
I probably regret this post by now.

This thread makes me want to cringe even harder knowing that I was the only one here that went through that phase. Then again I was heavily sheltered as a kid so anything that wasn't home/family-related was practically godsent. It started when I was in 3rd grade when all of my classmates were watching Bobobo and Naruto on Toonami, so feeding into the mass hysteria of overglorifying Japan was nothing short of normal at the time. As I got older I realized that maybe where I live isn't so bad and the nippon-fever started to wane after I started hanging out with my sensei after school. She taught English in Japan for several years, and she basically brought me back down to Earth by explaining value/cultural/political differences and how it might be difficult to adapt tothe culture shock since I had unrealistically high expectations. I was a cringy little shit that annoyed everyone until middle school, but I still had fun in the process.

Never had that. At most I wanted to spout japanese words on the internet cuz japanese sounds cool as hell (still feel that urge sometimes).

Anyway, the term 'weeb' was so desconstructed by the normies that it devolved to mean anything japanese related. Nowadays it is more of a semi-ironic meme than an actual insult.

sometimes my schedule is completely messed up and I would go to bed in the morning because of it

6 months after I became normal and rationalized my anime watching schedule

Not really. I like Japan to a certain extent. I never studied japanesse nor do I intend to but I'm not afraid to say that I love the language. I mean, it sounds cool, right? It's so full of emotion and quite unique... or at least when it comes to anime and music. Some voice actors and even singers (I don't like j-pop, k-pop or most of the anim songs buy I really love Aimer, Kalafina and One Ok Rock) are able to convey such strong emotions and I can't help but think they love their job so much. It's like they were born just for that. I used to be quite obsessed with some seiyuus and I watched some animes just because of them. Whenever I started to like someone I immediately searched their mal page and checked their other roles. I fell in love with some anime osts that I started to spend my time searching for a certain song. If all of this makes me a weeb then I'm ok with it.

By the way, If you know the ost, please tell me.

I never had one. Never became a Japanophile. Never gained a hankering to visit Japan or learn Japanese or eat sushi/ramen/pocky/etc. or insert gratuitous honorifics. Never found Japanese stuff specifically cooler than western stuff.

Probably has to do with me "getting into anime" only as an adult, long after I'd been playing Japanese (and other countries') games for years. Also maybe that I'm already quite accustomed to east Asian cultural things (including elements of modern pop culture and commercial products) so there really isn't anything particularly "special" about Japan or being Japanese.

willingness to learn about another country's language and culture does not make you a weeb.
pretending to be "fluent" in the language because you know a few words in anime as well as glorifying Japan or defending their war crimes no matter what - that is the sign of a weeb.

on topic:
i like their games, some of their animation and some of their manga.
i also find the language itself to be interesting, and someday i plan on learning other languages as well (youtube taught me that german is great for trolling)

You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

IT'S NOT A PHASE MOM

I didn't really had one because when I watched the most anime was as a teenager and I didn't really know anything or had any interest in Japan itself. I became more acquainted with the country in the last few years, and though I admire a lot of it over western stuff I never really was the kind to idolise it. I also would never trade western entertainment over for Japanese.

No. I never had a weeb phase. I wanted to watch more animation after running out of cartoons to watch. Other things that I care about are the retro Nintendo games and the old school Yu-gi-oh card game (not collecting cards) and whenever I'm thinking of getting a car. Other than that, I don't give a shit about anything coming from Japan or care enough to want to learn more about Japanese culture, language etc.

Japan is interesting as they make a lot of great entertainment that intertwines with western culture very often but, I never really felt a genuine rush to straight up go to Japan and learn the language. It was always just entertaintment. Also learning a language is a very big time investment so there's that keeping a road block for it.

Eh, you don't have to be a "weeaboo" to realize how advanced Japan is compared to other countries. But it's thanks to anime that I've learned about Japan, otherwise I would have still been in the dark. I can't help but compare my country to Japan, since we're so behind. There is even a joke about my country: "When the end of the world happens, everyone will move here because we are 50 years behind".

and honestly, i hate mixing two difference languages altogether even though unconsciously i did mix my native language with english sometimes... yeah i do hate myself sometimes

I never had one because I started watching anime when I was 5. At that point all I had really established was that I like animation and Dragon Ball z was more action packed than the other cartoons I was watching. I did generally like Toonami better as a time block but a huge selling point of that was Tom the host as well as the various events and giveaways they did back in those days.

Anime is poison to children's minds and it creates a fake world for them to live in. Anime introduces pornographic material at a young age and has very graphic and violent scenes. This carries over into adulthood and creates these lazy, nasty, hideous slobs that were once your children that now sleep with an anime body pillow at night and read mangas at least 10 times a day. Anime also consumes your soul and wastes time that could be used to go outside, get 60 minutes of fresh air, do homework and contribute something to society. The people who watch anime are not the problem, anime is. Anime is the root of all problems, cancer, war, Africa, and the Nazis. Since people watch anime on the TV so much, it uses electricity and is the reason why the oil reserves will run out soon. Anime causes cancer because it has been proven TV screens emit radiation and radiation causes cancer. Anime has caused war by inspiring the Nazis to side with the Japanese through their cartoons and establishing the Pacific Front in World War 2. African leaders in Africa are corrupted by anime influences and they cannot tend to their peoples needs and cannot feed them. Future generations will be ruined and destroyed by anime influence. Everyone thinks the downfall of humanity will be ourselves, but in reality it is anime. After the atomic radiation, the Japanese wanted to get their revenge on the world and created their ultimate weapon, anime.

But when it comes to entertainment I still prefer Japanese over the local crap made here and even though I eventually started to lose my interest in Japan I still hate my country - not because I see Japan as superior but because I've seen and experienced plenty of bad things in my country.

No, I've actually have no clue what you are talking about. Neither my friends (at least openly) nor I have ever went through such a phase. That said, only seeing this kinds of behaviour of the internet made it somewhat difficult to ascertain whether the behaviour is from a consistent group of people or is actually a revolving door of new people coming in and older people maturing out of it.

That said, while I can say that I'm proud of my culture, the same can't be said for when it comes to the entertainment media that my country produces. It really is a somewhat complex problem, as there are many factors to consider like being a small country with a small talent pool to pull from, the heavy emphasis on skills deemed more practical (like science or maths) etc. It is a similar situation to why our country doesn't produce world class athletes.

I... never really thought that Japan was better than where I live, but I DID get super defensive of their culture and of anime, especially since my jerkwad older brother thought that it was hilarious to dis anything Japanese and treat me like a weeb...
(Also my mom had some major misconceptions about anime... And Japanese people.)

I pretty much blame my family for any and all weeby behaviour. ;b

One thing I'm wondering is where does it came from? Like I remember when I was younger I thought Japan was great because they made a lot of my video games and my favorite shows but then I started being really defensive about it and started having delusions and misconceptions and I feel like it's because I believed shit other weebs said but why did say that? Were they influenced too? Then who started it all?

Also, people that says "if you prefer Japan culture to your own culture, you are a weeb", maybe people don't necessarily like their culture to begin with. Where is it specified as a human being that I am obligated to like the culture where I am born more than any other culture?

What is Canadian culture anyway? Sucking the US's ass all the time for movies? Stand-up comedians? Making stereotypical jokes that we all live in igloos, winter last the entire year, we ride moose, we are super polite? We watch hockey, we play hockey? Being bullied if you don't cheer "your" team that hasn't been decided by you? Players being violent instead of actually playing?

Japan filled the void if anything lol

( I think I was thinking Japnanese were better because at that time I started to wear japanese fashion and people were mocking me about that , and I was thinking in Japan people were all open-minded )
Fortunatly ,I have never place japanese word in the middle of my sentence except 'kawaii ' .But I was really irealistic about Japan . And wanted to live there

Now ,I still want to live in Japan , I still wear japanese fashion but I'm more realistic about japan , and grow up of my weeb phase .

But I'm still obssess with Japan
